Plasmon-Enhanced Visible and Near-Infrared Photodetection with Gold Nanorods UCNPs/MoSsub.2 Hybrid Device
The near-infrared photodetection of monolayer MoS[sub.2] can be achieved using upconverted nanoparticles (UCNPs). Herein, we demonstrated that gold nanorods (Au NRs) further enhanced the near-infrared photoresponsivity of a hybrid device via the surface plasmon enhancement of the localized field. We synthesized a three-layer device comprising Au NRs, UCNPs (NaYF[sub.4]:Yb[sup.3+], Er[sup.3+]), and monolayer MoS[sub.2], and examined its photoelectric characteristics using laser irradiation with varying power densities at 980 nm, the excitation wavelength of UCNPs. Compared with a device without Au NRs, the photoelectric response of the three-layer device was greatly improved at 5 V bias, and photoresponsivity was increased at visible wavelengths (450, 532, and 635 nm). This study contributes to the knowledge of two-dimensional materials for the development of hybrid photoelectronic devices.
The art of making peace : lessons learned from peace treaties
This unique volume looks at international peace treaties, at their results, effects and failures. It reflects the outcome of an international conference held in the Peace Palace (The Hague) on the occasion of the Centenary of this institution, which opened its doors on the eve of World War I. 00The volume offers the reflections of the leading experts attending the conference and the open debate which followed. The Treaty of Versailles of 1919, the mother of all peace treaties, is the first to be critically discussed. How should this treaty be viewed with the knowledge of today? What are the lessons learned in the light of historic developments? Subsequently, the Dayton Agreement, which sealed the end to the bloody conflict in the former Yugoslavia (1992-1995), and the Sudan Agreement, which came into being after lengthy negotiations in 2005, are analysed in the same way. Finally, the situations which arose in relation to the devastating wars between Iran and Iraq (1980-1988) and between Kuwait and Iraq are discussed. As these states could not reach a settlement themselves, the United Nations Security Council imposed the terms of the ceasefire and peaceful cooperation in important and innovative resolutions. 00.
Does Literariness Influence Negative Empathy? A Study on the Effects of Foregrounding on Readers' Affective and Aesthetic Reactions
This study investigates how stylistic foregrounding influences readers' narrative empathy with morally ambiguous narrators-thus offering empirical insight into the concept of negative empathy, a form of emotionally invested but ethically conflicted engagement. In a between-subjects experiment, 59 participants read either original or stylistically manipulated excerpts from Lolita and The Kindly Ones, rating their emotional and aesthetic reactions. Results show that original, foregrounded texts significantly enhanced state empathy-across affective, cognitive, and associative dimensions-compared to manipulated versions. However, empathic distress was unaffected by stylistic manipulation, being instead predicted by individual trait empathy. Mediation analyses confirmed that aesthetic appreciation partially accounted for the effect of foregrounding on state empathy, while fully mediating the (weaker) effect on empathic distress, thus supporting an aesthetic pathway for emotional alignment. Participants' post-reading reflections reinforced these findings: readers of original texts more often reported closeness, immersion, and ambivalent feelings, while readers of manipulated versions expressed detachment and unease. Although moral judgments occurred in both groups, those reading the foregrounded texts more frequently offered justifications or mitigating interpretations of the characters' disturbing behavior. Text-specific analyses revealed that The Kindly Ones elicited greater distress overall, suggesting that thematic content may exert a stronger influence on empathic distress than stylistic form. These findings offer empirical support for negative empathy as a morally complex and aesthetically mediated form of narrative empathy fostered by stylistic features, thus advancing theoretical and methodological approaches in empirical literary studies about the interplay between style and narrative empathy. Keywords: empirical study of literature, foregrounding, literariness, narrative empathy, negative empathy, reader-response study
How mediation works : resolving conflict through talk
\"Using conversation analysis to study the interaction between mediators and disputants, this study shows how mediation is used to resolve conflict in small claims and divorce mediation sessions. Angela Garcia explores the techniques mediators use to help disputants tell their stories, make and respond to complaints and accusations, and come up with ideas for resolving the dispute. By analyzing these techniques in their interactional context, she shows how they impact the experience and responses of disputants, and demonstrates that mediator techniques can empower disputants, maximize disputant autonomy, and display mediator's neutrality while in some cases, the organization of talk in mediation may work against these goals. This book is the first to use conversation analysis to study how mediation works and how mediators can best help disputants\"-- Provided by publisher.
