This paper examines the influence of adopting resource efficiency actions, saving water, saving energy, using renewable energy, saving materials, minimizing waste, selling scrap, recycling, using durable products, promoting environmental responsibility, and offering green marketing products and services on the performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). More specifically, we investigate specific resource efficiency actions and their impact on production costs, investment, the available support for product expansion, and the effect of encountered barriers on SME performance. We develop a theoretical framework based on stakeholder- and resource-based theories to serve as the foundation for this analysis. We use these theories to explain the link between eco-efficiency actions, firm performance, and ecological behavior, along with public policy and innovation. This study uses Flash Eurobarometer survey datasets FL342, FL381, FL426, and FL456, which cover SMEs across time and sectors in 28 EU countries. The data are analyzed through descriptive and ordered logit regression analysis, using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) to test the relationship between the above variables and the parameters. In terms of practical implications, these findings are crucial in helping SMEs pursue sustainable development. According to the findings, SMEs lack information on how implementing eco-efficiency action affects their financial health and sustainable innovation. This study can provide valuable insights into how implementing eco-efficiency practices can positively impact a company’s bottom line, good health, and employees’ well-being and how SMEs can use this information to make more informed decisions. Additionally, the findings can help inform policy makers about how to better support SMEs in pursuing sustainable development.

An FRB Sent Me a DM: Constraining the Electron Column of the Milky Way Halo with Fast Radio Burst Dispersion Measures from CHIME/FRB

The CHIME/FRB project has detected hundreds of fast radio bursts (FRBs), providing an unparalleled population to statistically probe the foreground media that they illuminate. One such foreground medium is the ionized halo of the Milky Way (MW). We estimate the total Galactic electron column density from FRB dispersion measures (DMs) as a function of Galactic latitude using four different estimators, including ones that assume spherical symmetry of the ionized MW halo and ones that imply more latitudinal variation in density. Our observation-based constraints of the total Galactic DM contribution for ∣b∣ ≥ 30°, depending on the Galactic latitude and selected model, span 87.8–141 pc cm−3. This constraint implies upper limits on the MW halo DM contribution that range over 52–111 pc cm−3. We discuss the viability of various gas density profiles for the MW halo that have been used to estimate the halo’s contribution to DMs of extragalactic sources. Several models overestimate the DM contribution, especially when assuming higher halo gas masses (∼3.5 × 1012 M ⊙). Some halo models predict a higher MW halo DM contribution than can be supported by our observations unless the effect of feedback is increased within them, highlighting the impact of feedback processes in galaxy formation.

Inhomogeneity in the Local ISM and Its Relation to the Heliosphere

This paper reviews past research and new studies underway of the local interstellar environment and its changing influence on the heliosphere. The size, shape, and physical properties of the heliosphere outside of the heliopause are determined by the surrounding environment – now the outer region of the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC). The temperature, turbulence, and velocity vector of neutral atoms and ions in the LIC and other partially ionized interstellar clouds are measured from high-resolution spectra of interstellar absorption lines observed with the STIS instrument on the
HST
. Analysis of such spectra led to a kinematic model with many interstellar clouds defined by velocity vectors derived from radial velocity measurements. This analysis identified fifteen clouds located within about 10 pc of the Sun and their mean temperatures, turbulence, and velocity vectors. With the increasing number of sight lines now being analyzed, we find that temperatures and turbulent velocities have spatial variations within the LIC and other nearby clouds much larger than measurement uncertainties, and that these spatial variations appear to be randomly distributed and can be fit by Gaussians. The inhomogeneous length scale is less than 4,000 AU, a distance that the heliosphere will traverse in less than 600 years. The temperatures and turbulent velocities do not show significant trends with stellar distance or angle from the LIC center. If/when the Sun enters an inter-cloud medium, the physical properties of the future heliosphere will be very different from the present. For the heliosheath and the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) just outside of the heliopause, the total pressures are approximately equal to the gravitational pressure of overlying material in the Galaxy. The internal pressure in the LIC is far below that in the VLISM, but there is an uncertain ram pressure term produced by the flow of the LIC with respect to its environment.

This study looked at what happens when the nutrients in agricultural grade (AG) medium are changed and how that changes the biomass production and CO2 fixation ability of Isochrysis sp. It aims to address the challenges in establishing biofuel stocks due to the microalgae issue. A medium optimization system (AMOS) was first used to determine the optimum level of nitrogen, phosphorus, and micronutrients in AG medium using Factorial and Box Behnken Experimental Design, which resulted in improvements to N, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, and Z with 15 mM, 10 mM, 0.5 mM, 0.8 mM, 0.3 mM, and 0.15 mM, respectively. Subsequently, the improved medium was tested in a 1L culture volume, resulting in a 2.37 gL-1 biomass extracted from cultivation in the improved AG medium compared to cultivation in the traditional F/2 medium (1.63 gL-1). Cultures with higher Ca and Fe tested in an interim study yielded 9% and 7% enhanced biomass production compared to AG medium. The new optimized medium, which is known as TNBR-optimized medium (OM), was tested at the live coal-fired power plant in a 250 L air-lift bubbling column-type photobioreactor supplied with simulated and actual flue gas. The TNBR-optimized medium has demonstrated better algae growth, especially on actual flue gas, which has increased the concentration of CO2. The improved CO2 fixation rate was 0.72 gCO2.L-1 day-1, respectively, against those obtained from the previous report – 0.52 gCO2 L-1 day-1. An improved medium has been formulated to cultivate Isochrysis sp., and the current work can be further utilized for larger-scale cultivations.

Mixing Interstellar Clouds Surrounding the Sun

On its journey through the Galaxy, the Sun passes through diverse regions of the interstellar medium. High-resolution spectroscopic measurements of interstellar absorption lines in spectra of nearby stars show absorption components from more than a dozen warm partially ionized clouds within 15 pc of the Sun. The two nearest clouds—the Local Interstellar Cloud (LIC) and Galactic (G) cloud—move toward each other. Their bulk heliocentric velocities can be compared with the interstellar neutral helium flow velocity obtained from space-based experiments. We combine recent results from Ulysses, IBEX, and STEREO observations to find a more accurate estimate of the velocity and temperature of the very local interstellar medium. We find that, contrary to the widespread viewpoint that the Sun resides inside the LIC, the locally observed velocity of the interstellar neutral helium is consistent with a linear combination of the velocities of the LIC and G cloud, but not with either of these two velocities. This finding shows that the Sun travels through a mixed-cloud interstellar medium composed of material from both these clouds. Interactions between these clouds explain the substantially higher density of the interstellar hydrogen near the Sun and toward stars located within the interaction region of these two clouds. The observed asymmetry of the interstellar helium distribution function also supports this interaction. The structure and equilibrium in this region require further studies using in situ and telescopic observations.
