Encountering the past within the present : modern experiences of time
\"Encountering the Past within the Present: Modern Experiences of Time examines different encounters with the past from within the present - whether as commemoration, nostalgia, silence, ghostly haunting or combinations thereof. Taking its cue from Hannah Arendt's definition of the present as a time span lying between past and future, the author reflects on the old philosophical question of how to live the good life - not only with others who are physically with us, but also with those whose presence is ghostly and liminal. While tradition may no longer command the same authority as it did in antiquity or the middle ages; individuals are, by no means, severed from the past. Rather, nostalgic longing for bygone times and traumatic preoccupation with painful historical events demonstrate the vitality of the past within the present. Divided into three parts, chapters examine ways in which the legacies of World War II, the Holocaust and communism have been remembered after 1945 and 1989. Maintaining a sustained reflection on the nexus of memory, modernity and time in tandem with ancient questions of responsibility for one another and the world, the volume contributes to the growing field of memory studies from a philosophical perspective. Our Faithfulness to the Past
This book brings together a series of interrelated chapters on the ethics and politics of memory by the late feminist philosopher Sue Campbell. In Campbell’s treatment of them, both memory and the self are deeply relational, the boundaries between individuals and collectives need to be interrogated, and there is a deep entanglement of epistemic and ethical norms. The chapters of Part I, diagnoses and responds to contemporary skepticism about personal memory and develops an account of good remembering that is better suited to contemporary (reconstructive) theories of memory. Being faithful to the past is both an epistemic and an ethical achievement, needing virtues of both accuracy and integrity, and often requiring us to re-negotiate the boundaries between individuals and collectives. The chapters of Part II concern the many activities and practices through which we explore and negotiate the shared significance of our different recollections of the past, and the importance of sharing memory for constituting our identities in relation to others. Views about self, identity, relation, and responsibility (all influenced by traditions in feminist philosophy) are explored through the lens of Campbell’s relational conception of memory. The chapters of Part III, discuss Canada’s Indian Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and use Campbell’s relational conception of memory to illuminate and address the challenges of sharing memory, renewing selves, and transforming relationships in contexts fractured by moral and political difference, especially contexts rooted in past injustice and oppression.

Der Band setzt an dieser Diagnose an und rückt den Zusammenhang von Medien, Kultur und gesellschaftlicher Erinnerung in der Gegenwart in den Mittelpunkt eines neuen Theorieangebots. Aufbauend auf einer Systematisierung und Kritik bisheriger Entwürfe wird eine medienkulturwissenschaftliche Terminologie und Modellierung von Gedächtnis und Erinnerung vorgeschlagen, die an den bisherigen Diskurs anschließt und zugleich durch eine Integration kommunikationswissenschaftlicher Überlegungen neue Perspektiven eröffnet.
Collateral Effects of the Tell Me MORE! Intervention on the Joint Reminiscing of Mothers of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Purpose The purpose of this study was to analyze secondary data from three mother-child dyads in order to evaluate how family photographs and training in naturalistic strategies affected the way mothers reminisce with their children with autism spectrum disorders. Method A secondary analysis (i.e., collateral effects) of a single-case dataset was conducted to assess the impact of family photographs and training in naturalistic strategies on the selected variables. Results The introduction of family photographs showed positive effects on the mother’s reminiscing style and the child’s memory responses across all dyads. Furthermore, additional improvements were observed in these areas after training and coaching in the target strategies. Conclusion This study demonstrates the positive impact of using family photographs and naturalistic based strategies in joint-reminiscing conversations for mothers and children with autism spectrum disorder. The intervention improved the mothers reminiscing style and child’s memory responses, highlighting the potential value of parent-implemented interventions, especially those based on naturalistic strategies, in supporting individuals with autism spectrum disorder and their caregivers.
