Emergence and collapse of early villages
Ancestral Pueblo farmers encountered the deep, well watered, and productive soils of the central Mesa Verde region of Southwest Colorado around A.D. 600, and within two centuries built some of the largest villages known up to that time in the U.S. Southwest. But one hundred years later, those villages were empty, and most people had gone. This cycle repeated itself from the mid-A.D. 1000s until 1280, when Puebloan farmers permanently abandoned the entire northern Southwest. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, this book examines how climate change, population size, interpersonal conflict, resource depression, and changing social organization contribute to explaining these dramatic shifts. Comparing the simulations from agent-based models with the precisely dated archaeological record from this area, this text will interest archaeologists working in the Southwest and in Neolithic societies around the world as well as anyone applying modeling techniques to understanding how human societies shape, and are shaped by the environments we inhabit.
Winds from the north : Tewa origins and historical anthropology
The “abandonment” of Mesa Verde and the formation of the Rio Grande Pueblos represent two classic events in North American prehistory. Yet, despite a century of research, no consensus has been reached on precisely how, or even if, these two events were related. In this landmark study, Scott Ortman proposes a novel and compelling solution to this problem through an investigation of the genetic, linguistic, and cultural heritage of the Tewa Pueblo people of New Mexico. Integrating data and methods from human biology, linguistics, archaeology, and cultural anthropology, Ortman shows that a striking social transformation took place as Mesa Verde people moved to the Rio Grande, such that the resulting ancestral Tewa culture was a unique hybrid of ideas and practices from various sources. While addressing several long-standing questions in American archaeology, Winds from the North also serves as a methodological guidebook, including new approaches to integrating archaeology and language based on cognitive science research. As such, it will be of interest to researchers throughout the social and human sciences.
Enhancing refereeing skills: exploring the influence of an Android table tennis app on student referees
Objective: The role of referees in table tennis is crucial for ensuring fair play and proper game management. Traditional training methods for referees face challenges in keeping up with the increasing pace and complexity of modern table tennis matches. Objective to evaluate the impact of the Android Table Tennis Application (ATTA) on enhancing referee competence. Methodology: The study employed a quasi-experimental design with 30 student participants divided into experimental and control groups. The experimental group used ATTA for training while the control group received traditional instruction. Both groups were assessed through pre-tests and post-tests to measure their understanding of officiating principles and practical refereeing skills. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvement, with mean learning outcomes increasing from 73.9 to 90.0 (16-point increase). The control group's scores improved from 74.0 to 83.0 (9-point increase). Statistical analysis using paired sample t-tests showed a p-value <0.001, indicating significant differences between pre- and post-test results. Discussion: The ATTA facilitates a deeper understanding of table tennis principles and standards while enhancing adjudicative skills in a simulated environment. Conclusions: The Android Table Tennis Application proved to be an effective tool for enhancing referee training outcomes. The interactive and comprehensive nature of ATTA, combined with its accessibility and convenience, resulted in better learning outcomes compared to traditional teaching methods. The findings suggest that educational institutions should consider implementing ATTA to improve table tennis officiating education.
Deposition, exhumation, and paleoclimate of an ancient lake deposit, Gale crater, Mars
Since 2012, the Curiosity rover has been diligently studying rocky outcrops on Mars, looking for clues about past water, climate, and habitability. Grotzinger et al. describe the analysis of a huge section of sedimentary rocks near Gale crater, where Mount Sharp now stands (see the Perspective by Chan). The features within these sediments are reminiscent of delta, stream, and lake deposits on Earth. Although individual lakes were probably transient, it is likely that there was enough water to fill in low-lying depressions such as impact craters for up to 10,000 years. Wind-driven erosion removed many of these deposits, creating Mount Sharp. Science , this issue p. 10.1126/science.aac7575 , see also p. 167 Mount Sharp now stands where there was once a large intercrater lake system. [Also see Perspective by Chan ] The landforms of northern Gale crater on Mars expose thick sequences of sedimentary rocks. Based on images obtained by the Curiosity rover, we interpret these outcrops as evidence for past fluvial, deltaic, and lacustrine environments. Degradation of the crater wall and rim probably supplied these sediments, which advanced inward from the wall, infilling both the crater and an internal lake basin to a thickness of at least 75 meters. This intracrater lake system probably existed intermittently for thousands to millions of years, implying a relatively wet climate that supplied moisture to the crater rim and transported sediment via streams into the lake basin. The deposits in Gale crater were then exhumed, probably by wind-driven erosion, creating Aeolis Mons (Mount Sharp).

Large area and structured epitaxial graphene produced by confinement controlled sublimation of silicon carbide
After the pioneering investigations into graphene-based electronics at Georgia Tech, great strides have been made developing epitaxial graphene on silicon carbide (EG) as a new electronic material. EG has not only demonstrated its potential for large scale applications, it also has become an important material for fundamental two-dimensional electron gas physics. It was long known that graphene mono and multilayers grow on SiC crystals at high temperatures in ultrahigh vacuum. At these temperatures, silicon sublimes from the surface and the carbon rich surface layer transforms to graphene. However the quality of the graphene produced in ultrahigh vacuum is poor due to the high sublimation rates at relatively low temperatures. The Georgia Tech team developed growth methods involving encapsulating the SiC crystals in graphite enclosures, thereby sequestering the evaporated silicon and bringing growth process closer to equilibrium. In this confinement controlled sublimation (CCS) process, very high-quality graphene is grown on both polar faces of the SiC crystals. Since 2003, over 50 publications used CCS grown graphene, where it is known as the \"furnace grown\" graphene. Graphene multilayers grown on the carbon-terminated face of SiC, using the CCS method, were shown to consist of decoupled high mobility graphene layers. The CCS method is now applied on structured silicon carbide surfaces to produce high mobility nano-patterned graphene structures thereby demonstrating that EG is a viable contender for next-generation electronics. Here we present for the first time the CCS method that outperforms other epitaxial graphene production methods.
