To contribute to this reassessment of an important component of America's immigration infrastructure, the Center for Immigration Studies will release a report next week examining the serious problems in our immigration courts and offer solutions to address them.

The white, black and tan hounds, who resemble tall beagles, stayed in their pack, surprisingly quiet. They would not cry until after they were led onto the trail by two of the three joint Masters of the Fox Hounds (M.F.H) -- [H. Ann Metcalf] and Andy Komer. Then, after the hounds catch the scent, the cry goes up. Even some of the riders notice the strong and pungent odor, that of mink urine. Other club members had drizzled the musky substance on a challenging 5- to 7- mile trail over and around the open spaces of Sewickley Heights, Franklin Park, Bell Acres, and Sewickley Hills. It would take the riders about 90 minutes to cover. For the horses and hounds, too. Anyone who has seen the horses prick their ears and stomp with impatience to run would never dream of calling the drag hunt inhumane to them. Many of the horses are ex- racers, and running is in their blood. If one loses his rider, he usually stays with the rest of the herd anyway. Metcalf's horse, named Its, was a steeplechaser in Virginia. Another horse in the Thanksgiving hunt formerly raced at Golden Gate Fields in San Francisco; a stablemate used to run at Mountaineer. [Carol Semple Thompson] rides a big quarter horse named Thunder. On Thanksgiving, the people picking up strays include M.F.H. [Cherry Semple White]. She is as itchy to hunt as the horses and hounds but is temporarily unable. Earlier this year, she was taking three of the Semple horses into a paddock and one, through a series of missteps, fell on her. Her resulting injuries included a broken collarbone, six broken ribs, two cracked vertebrae, a punctured lung and a bruised aorta. Falls and injuries are part of the hunt game, but the riders prefer to earn their wounds in battle.
