LGBT Religious Activism: Predicting State Variations in the Number of Metropolitan Community Churches, 1974-2000

Armstrong and Bernstein (2008) critique the emphasis movement scholars place upon activism within the formal political sphere, proposing, instead, a multi-institutional approach which argues that protest can occur within any social institution and that the desired outcomes of activism can include cultural outcomes. The goal of this article is to expand the range of social movement targets studied through an examination of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) activism within the institution of religion. In the United States, religion, particularly Christianity, is used as the primary justification for defining same-sex sexuality as undesirable and denying LGBT individuals full citizenship. The LGBT community challenges these traditional Christian definitions of same-sex sexuality in numerous ways, including through the creation of LGBT-affirming congregations. I examine the development and spread of congregations affiliated with the United Federation of Metropolitan Community Churches (UFMCC), an LGBT-affirmative denomination, across all 50 states from 1974 to 2000. Drawing upon organizational ecology, resource mobilization, political opportunity, and theories of religious switching, I find that the distribution of UFMCC congregations challenges the usefulness of traditional explanations for activism.

Esta tese trata das perspectivas queer a partir de suas assimilaçöes pela Igreja da Comunidade Metropolitana de Belo Horizonte (ICM BH). Com mais de 50 anos, a Fraternidade Universal das Igrejas da Comunidade Metropolitana se apresenta como uma denominaçao \"radicalmente inclusiva\", que se expressa de maneira complexa como Igreja e como instituiçao de luta pelos Direitos Humanos. Nesse contexto, buscou-se investigar em que medida os Estudos Queer, por meio, principalmente, de sua relaçao com a Teologia, reconfiguram as experiencias religiosas e políticas de uma comunidade de fé tradicionalmente colocada a margem do cristianismo hegemônico. Pressupostos bibliográficos sobre os Estudos Queer e sobre a Teologia Queer fundamentaram a verificabilidade da discussao teórica por meio da observaçao participativa de eventos específicos da ICM BH, como o Culto Queer e a Marcha contra a LGBTFobia. Percebeu-se que a dinamicidade da liturgia, enquanto forma ritualística de dizer sobre si, é um mecanismo fundamental utilizado para dramatizar o mundo e, também, para subverter a precariedade a qual LGBTs tem sido submetidas. Assim, a Igreja dá-se no templo e nas ruas, permitindo que a concretude da existencia se encontré com o concreto da cidade.

A documentary about the life and times of Reverend Troy Perry, founder of the Metropolitan Community Chuch, the first church to recognize the spiritual needs of the gay community. He was also the first openly gay person to serve on the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Rights. In 1969, he performed the first public same-sex wedding in the United States and in 1970 he filed the first lawsuit seeking legal recognition for same-sex marriages. Perry has been on the forefront of the battle for gay rights.

A reivindicação da cidadania religiosa de pessoas LGBTQIAPN+ dentro das instituições religiosas tem gerado grande sofrimento a quem se entende como parte de uma tradicáo religiosa historicamente hegemónica. Tais situações configuram formas de violência religiosa que ultrapassam o campo de instituições específicas e se manifestam na cultura como parte do que se tem chamado de LGBTfobia. É no contexto desses enfrentamentos que se situam aquilo que se está se propondo chamar \"martírio queer\". Nessa reflexão particular, o contexto privilegiado para a identificação das fontes e análise do tema em discussão é a emergência e desenvolvimento do que se convencionou chamar de \"Igrejas inclusivas\" no contexto estadunidense. Como exemplo de mártires queer, serão apresentadas as trajetórias de duas personagens fundamentais para a história das \"Igrejas inclusivas\" no mundo - a transativista Sylvia Rivera e o Reverendo Troy Perry, das Metropolitan Conmunity Churches.

The author presents a consultative field study report describing how the archives and historical records collection of a congregation associated with the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan Community Churches were organized with little personnel resources and financial support. Details are given concerning the religious, political, social, and cultural aspects that influenced the design of the collection. Rationale and examples are given concerning how the controlled- vocabulary subject file was built and how descriptive catalog records and folders of manuscript items were developed. Problems related to continued development of the collection and to the need for electronic access to records are also discussed.

We just don't agree with homosexuality, and we can't condone the homosexual life style.\" Ann Boese, publisher of the Bone Island Press, which prints a guide for visitors to Key West, estimates that a quarter of the island's population is gay or lesbian. \"Most people think it's stupid,\" Ms. Boese said of the association's stand. \"The gay community is involved in everything. Then you come to a Christmas parade without a political agenda, and all of a sudden this silent, disapproving minority is able to exert power.\" \"I think it is hypocritical on the part of the association,\" said the city's Mayor, Dennis Wardlow. \"Key West is a very tolerant town. We've always had a live-and-let-live feel.We're all God's children; we're all created equally. That's what I think the Bible says.\"

Church to perform same-sex marriages using ancient Christian tradition

[Brent Hawkes] pledged last week to use the ancient Christian tradition of publishing banns to legally perform the marriages of a local lesbian couple and a gay couple. Same-sex couples can't obtain marriage licences from municipal clerks. But Hawkes says the Ontario Marriage Act allows couples to be granted a licence if their names are published and read out at church on the three successive Sundays prior to the wedding. Sunday was the first reading of the banns and the double wedding was scheduled for Jan. 14. Hawkes will then issue the certificates and ask the province to register the marriages.

Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Literacy Among Korean American Women: A Community Health Worker–Led Intervention

Objectives. To test a community health worker (CHW)-led health literacy intervention on mammogram and Papanicolaou test screening among Korean American women. Methods. We conducted a cluster-randomized trial at 23 ethnic churches in the Baltimore, Maryland–Washington, DC, metropolitan area between 2010 and 2014. Trained CHWs enrolled 560 women. The intervention group received an individually tailored cancer-screening brochure followed by CHW-led health literacy training and monthly telephone counseling with navigation assistance. Study outcomes included receipt of an age-appropriate cancer screening test, health literacy, cancer knowledge, and perceptions about cancer screening at 6 months. Results. The odds of having received a mammogram were 18.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 9.2, 37.4) times higher in the intervention than in the control group, adjusting for covariates. The odds of receiving a Papanicolaou test were 13.3 (95% CI = 7.9, 22.3) times higher; the odds of receiving both tests were 17.4 (95% CI = 7.5, 40.3) times higher. Intervention effects also included increases in health literacy and positive perceptions about cancer screening. Conclusions. A health literacy–focused CHW intervention successfully promoted cancer-screening behaviors and related cognitive and attitudinal outcomes in Korean American women.
