The Effects of Humor Intervention on Teenagers’ Sense of Humor, Positive Emotions, and Learning Ability: A Positive Psychological Perspective

Amid widespread concerns about the mental health of teenagers, this quasi-experimental study examines the effects of a classroom humor intervention on 268 seventh graders’ positive emotions, as well as their sense of humor and language ability. The participants completed self-report measures and a language exam before and after the intervention, which lasted six weeks. Analysis of covariance and mediation analysis were used to evaluate the effects. The results supported the researchers’ hypotheses that the humor intervention would significantly increase learners’ positive emotions, sense of humor, and language ability. The mediation analysis revealed that sense of humor mediated the relationship between the humor intervention and positive emotions, and that neither sense of humor nor positive emotion was the sole factor contributing to the observed learning gains. The study concludes that the intervention helped foster a learner-friendly environment in which the participants increased their positive emotions, sense of humor and language ability simultaneously, and makes recommendations for practitioners and future researchers on that basis.

Influence of humor expression on suicidal ideation among adolescents: mediating effects of depressive emotion and positive emotion

Background
The occurrence and degree of suicidal ideation during the past month in adolescents should be regarded seriously. Several studies have noted that humor expression style and depressive emotion may influence adolescents’ suicidal ideation. However, there is insufficient evidence concerning whether positive emotion reduces such suicidal ideation in adolescents. In addition, the relationships among humor expression, depressive emotion, positive emotion and suicidal ideation remain to be confirmed. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to test the mediating roles of depressive emotion and positive emotion in the relationship between humor expression and recent adolescent’s suicidal ideation.
Methods
A total of 1551 students in junior high school completed questionnaires. The collected data were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) with LISREL 8.80 and Monte Carlo resampling with R.
Results
The results indicate that suicidal ideation in adolescents during the past month was related not only to humor expression but also to depressive emotion and positive emotion. The stronger the depressive emotion felt, the stronger the suicidal ideation; in contrast, the stronger the positive emotion, the weaker the suicidal ideation. Moreover, depressive emotion and positive emotion were found to mediate the relationship between humor expression and suicidal ideation; additionally, positive emotion was found to mediate the relationship between depressive emotion and suicidal ideation.
Conclusion
These results highlight that depressive emotion and positive emotion may mediate the influence of humor expression on suicidal ideation among adolescents, and positive emotion may mediate the influence of depressive emotion on suicidal ideation. More attention should be paid to decreasing adolescents’ self-deprecating humor expression and depressive emotion, whereas more witty response humor expression and positive emotion should be encouraged to prevent their suicidal ideation.

Evaluation of the intraocular total IgE level and its ratio with serum IgE level for the diagnosis of ocular toxocariasis in children and adults: a retrospective comparative study

Background
Ocular Toxocariasis (OT) is characterized by complicated clinical manifestations, which makes it difficult to diagnose. In this study, we mainly evaluated the diagnostic values of intraocular fluid (IF) total IgE level and IF/Serum IgE ratio in OT and compared the differences between child and adult patients.
Methods
76 patients with 52 children (< 16 years) and 24 adults of clinically-diagnosed OT and 64 patients with non-OT uveitis were enrolled in this study. The paired IF and serum samples were collected for total IgE, total IgG and specific IgG testing. The IF IgE levels and IF/Serum IgE ratios were compared between child and adult patients. The area under the curve (AUC) was generated to assess the diagnostic performances of the above indicators.
Results
The IF IgE level was significantly higher in child patients than in adult patients (1671.79 ± 1425.97 versus 784.44 ± 544.73 ng/ml,
p
= 0.015). Besides, the IF/Serum IgE ratio showed similar trend with 24.02 ± 6.10 in children and 7.68 ± 5.05 in adults (
p
= 0.001). The best cutoff value of the IF IgE concentration was 10.65 ng/ml, yielding 77.6% (95%CI, Confidence Interval, 66.4–86.1%) sensitivity and 98.4% (95%CI, 90.5–99.9%) specificity. The IF IgE level showed lower AUC than that of IF specific IgG level (0.925 versus 0.975,
p
= 0.037). However, the AUC of IF/Serum IgE ratio for OT was significantly higher than that of GWC (0.934 versus 0.527,
p
< 0.0001). The best cutoff value of IF/Serum IgE ratio was 0.48 with the sensitivity of 78.4% (95%CI, 67.0-86.8%) and specificity of 98.4% (95%CI, 90.5–99.9%). For the diagnosis of child OT, the cutoff value of IF IgE level of child OT was 13.10 ng/ml with the high sensitivity of 82.7% (95%CI, 69.2–91.3%) while the best cutoff value of 10.65 ng/ml for adult OT yielded only 66.7% (95%CI, 44.7–83.6%) sensitivity. However, the sensitivity of IF/Serum IgE ratio for child OT (86.3%, 95%CI, 73.1–93.8%) was close to that for adult OT (87.0%, 95%CI, 65.3–96.6%).
Conclusions
Both IF IgE level and IF/Serum IgE ratio demonstrated good diagnostic performance for ocular toxocariasis and higher sensitivity of IF IgE level was noted for the diagnosis of child OT.

Toward More Joyful Learning: Integrating Play Into Frameworks of Middle Grades Teaching

Recent efforts to define qualities of effective teaching practice have done little to capture the role of play, imagination, and creativity in classroom teaching. Drawing on theories of play and data from a two-year case study that included classroom observations, interviews, artifact collection, and surveys, the author examines the ways in which elements of play were present across the practice of eight novice middle grades teachers. Building on examples of play in these classrooms, the author proposes adding the dimension of play to frameworks of middle grades teaching—a dimension that encompasses young adolescents' engagement in classroom work that involves choice and self-direction, imaginative creations, and a nonstressed state of interest and joy.

Isolation and characterization of novel primary cells from the human distal outflow pathway

Ocular hypertension occurs due to increased resistance to aqueous humor removal through the conventional outflow pathway. Unlike the proximal region of the conventional outflow pathway, the distal region has not been well studied, mostly due to lack of model systems. Here we describe isolation and characterization of human primary vascular distal outflow pathway (VDOP) cells from the distal region of the conventional outflow pathway. Tissue from the distal region was isolated from human corneo-scleral rims, digested with collagenase type I (100 U/ml) and placed on gelatin coated plates to allow cellular growth in Dulbecco’s Modified Eagle’s Medium (low glucose) containing fetal bovine serum and antibiotic/antimycotic. VDOP cells showed consistent proliferation for up to 7 passages, retained endothelial-like nature of the parent tissues and showed a unique marker phenotype of Lectin

) cells. Dexamethasone treated VDOP cells did not express myocilin and did not form cross-linked actin networks, in contrast to trabecular meshwork cells. These data show that VDOP cells are unique to the distal outflow region and can be used as a viable in vitro model system to understand the biology of the distal outflow pathway and intraocular pressure regulation.

Adolescents' peer networks tend to segregate by relative language proficiency, but students from all linguistic backgrounds benefit academically from classroom peer relationships both within and across English learner (EL) and non-EL classified groups. We drew upon social network analysis of student survey data in 46 English and math middle school classrooms and qualitative analysis of a subset of these classrooms (N = 10) to address the following: (a) How do demographics differ in classrooms with more or less academic peer network linguistic integration? and (b) How do teachers' classroom practices relate to differences in the linguistic integration of students' academic peer networks? Findings from this analysis add to the literature on the complex relationships between classroom characteristics, linguistic integration, and teacher practices.

Teacher Stress and Coping Strategies: A National Snapshot

This national survey of 1,201 kindergarten through Grade-12 U.S. teachers focused on three related areas: (1) sources of teacher stress, (2) manifestations of stress, and (3) suggested coping strategies. The survey instrument was adapted from the Teacher Stress Inventory and the Coping Scale for Adults. Results indicated that teachers nationwide are highly stressed, with California teachers at the top of the list. Differences in reported stress by socioeconomic class and suggested coping strategies are also discussed.

Etiological analysis of ocular herpes virus infection

Objective
To do the etiological analysis of ocular herps virus infection, revealing the pathogen species and the distribution of different virus types within the eye.
Methods
Samples were collected from 2017 to 2021 at the Department of Ophthalmology, Peking University Third Hospital and tested using real-time PCR for common ocular viruses: herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1), cytomegalovirus (CMV), varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The pathogenesis of the different viruses was classified and analyzed according to the site of infection.
Results
Viral PCR detections were performed on 3627 samples collected over the 5-years and 649 (17.89%) samples contained one or more of the viruses tested. The overall detection rate of CMV was highest at 9.93%. Of all sample types, aqueous humor was the most common (1752 cases), of which 340 were positive (19.41% positive rate). Corneal samples were the next most common, with 1481 cases and 250 positive results (16.88% positive rate). CMV positivity was higher in aqueous humor and corneal samples than other viruses; vitreous body had the highest positive rate at 36.36% (20/55), among which 18 cases were VZV positive.
Conclusions
Distribution of virus types differed among infection sites, with CMV the most common virus type detected in the cornea and aqueous humor, while VZV was the most common virus detected in the vitreous body.

This article explores the role of profanity and graphic humor in the bilingual wordplay of Latin@ middle school students. We highlight the creativity, skill, and communicative competence embedded in this transgressive wordplay, revealing how these youth employed profanity and graphic humor to index ethnic solidarity and construct bilingual identities. We argue that further exploration of such wordplay might well reveal other functions and meanings that are obscured when it is simply dismissed as inappropriate.
