The Gulf of California has many regions of potential tidal-stream energy that have been identified and characterized using in-situ measurements and numerical ocean models. The Midriff Islands region has received particular attention due to its increased current speeds and high kinetic energy. This increase in energy can be seen in the formation of internal wave packets propagating for several hundred kilometers. Here we present a brief description of internal wave measurements travel towards the Northern Gulf and explore energy generation sites. In this paper we characterize the tidal inflow and outflow that passes throughout the Midriff Islands in the central part of the Gulf. We use a three-dimensional numerical ocean model that adequately reproduces the tidal flow and the increase in speed and kinetic energy between the islands. The current flow structure shows the highest velocity cores near the shore and far from the bottom. During the rising tide, the maximum current flow (~0.6 ms−1) was found between Turón Island and San Lorenzo Island, from the surface to 200 m depth. When the currents flowed out of the Gulf, during the falling tide, the maximum negative current (−0.8 ms−1) was found between Tiburon Island and Turón Island, from near the surface to 80 m depth. Although there are favorable conditions for power generation potential by tidal flows, the vertical variability of the current must be considered for field development and equipment installation sites.

Marine diversity in the biosphere reserve of the most oceanic island in the Gulf of California: San Pedro Mártir

San Pedro Mártir island is of high biological, ecological, and fishery importance and was declared a biosphere reserve in 2002. This island is the most oceanic in the Gulf of California, and information on its rocky reefs is scarce. The present study aimed to generate the first list of conspicuous invertebrate and fish species based on in situ observations and to examine the community structure of the shallow rocky reefs of the reserve. In addition, we estimated the ecological indicators of richness, abundance, Shannon diversity, and Pielou evenness to evaluate the conservation status of the biosphere reserve. Data were collected annually from 2007 to 2017 through 2,192 underwater SCUBA transects. A total of 35 species of invertebrates and 73 species of fish were recorded. Most of the species are widely distributed along the eastern Pacific. Overall, 64% of the species found in this study are commercially important, and 11 species have been listed as protected. The abundance of commercially important invertebrate species (i.e., the sea cucumber Isostichopus fuscus and the spiny oyster Spondylus limbatus ) is decreasing, while commercially important fish species have maintained their abundance with periods of increase. The ecological indicators and the abundance and size of the commercial species indicate that the reserve is in good condition while meeting its conservation objectives.

Numerical analysis of biothermal-fluids and cardiac thermal pulse of abdominal aortic aneurysm

Abdominal aortic aneurysms are serious and difficult to detect, conditions can be deadly if they rupture. In this study, the heat transfer and flow physics of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) were discussed and associated with cardiac cycle to illustrate the cardiac thermal pulse (CTP) of AAA. A CTP and infrared thermography (IRT) evaluation-based on AAA and abdomen skin surface detection method was proposed, respectively. Infrared thermography (IRT) is a promising imaging technique that may detect AAA quicker and cheaper than other imaging techniques (as biomarker). From CFD rigid-wall and FSI Analysis, the transient bioheat transfer effect resulted in a distinct thermal signature (circular thermal elevation) on the temperature profile of midriff skin surface, at both regular body temperature and supine position, under normal clinical temperature. However, it is important to note that thermography is not a perfect technology, and it does have some limitations, such as lack of clinical trials. There is still work to be done to improve this imaging technique and make it a more viable and accurate method for detecting abdominal aortic aneurysms. However, thermography is currently one of the most convenient technologies in this field, and it has the potential to detect abdominal aortic aneurysms earlier than other techniques. CTP, on the other hand, was used to examine the thermal physics of AAA. In CFD rigid-wall Analysis, AAA had a CTP that only responded to systolic phase at regular body temperature. In contrast, a healthy abdominal aorta displayed a CTP that responded to the full cardiac cycle, including diastolic phase at all simulated cases. Besides, the findings from FSI Analysis suggest the influence of numerical simulation techniques on the prediction of thermal physics behaviours of AAA and abdominal skin surface. Lastly, this study correlated the relationship between natural convective heat transfer coefficient with AAA and provided reference for potential clinical diagnostic using IRT in clinical implications.

The islands Tiburon and Angel de la Guarda are located toward the northern part of the Gulf of California (NGC), these are commonly referred to as the Midriff Island zone. These islands are surrounded by channels and sills, which in interaction with tides propitiate the conditions for strong water column mixing, and together with the topography and stratification produce internal waves (IW). The Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has demonstrated its capacity to detect IW at important oceanic areas. In this study, the seasonal and inter-annual variability of IW was determined for the first time using \"quick-look\" SAR images (SI) at NGC during the period of 2000-2006.

For twenty-five years following the Voyager mission, scientists speculated about Saturn's largest moon, a mysterious orb clouded in orange haze.
