Qld: Woman bashed in case of mistaken identity
\"I heard her say: 'Can I help you?' and then I heard a thud and Mum give an 'Oomph',\" Mr Miller said. \"I heard words to the effect of: 'You hassled a mate of mine and now you've got me to deal with',\" he said. \"I said: 'I didn't even know who you are'.\"
Can stem cells repair brains? Researcher Freda Miller suspects malfunctioning stem cells cause neurological disorders in the embryo or early childhood
Because, if stem cells remain in the brain well beyond infancy, scientists might be able to recruit them pharmacologically to repair damage. \"Maybe you can't go back and fix what happened before the baby was born, but there's hope that maybe you can help to intervene in a positive way as it's still going on,\" [Freda Miller] explains. \"Right from the start, she had somehow educated herself . . . to realize that, frequently, the big breakthroughs don't come from targeted research on X,\" Miller says. \"They come from research that's hovering around the question of X, but not necessarily on it. So she has targeted her foundation at childhood neurological disorders, period - which is really impressive.\"
Skin stem cells used to mend spines of rats; Toronto research shows injured subjects walking better after injections
Freda Miller, a senior scientist at The Hospital for Sick Children and lead author of the study, said skin-derived stem cells have some advantages over other stem cell types. Scientists who use skin to generate stem cells do not need to use embryos, for example, and skin-derived stem cells can potentially be harvested from patients themselves, she said. Over the course of their research, the team found that skin-derived stem cells share characteristics with embryonic neural stem cells, which generate the nervous system. They also showed skin-derived stem cells can produce Schwann cells, a cell type that creates a good growth environment to repair injured central nervous system axons - the long nerve cell fibres that conduct electrical impulses between nerves - and that these Schwann cells put down myelin along the injured spinal cord. Like the insulation around an electrical cord, myelin wraps around nerves, creating a sheath that helps quickly conduct nerve impulses.
Cowardly attack with bat
\"We usually go out for dinner on Mother's Day, but we're not now. I'm a bit scared to go.\" \"All I could think was `[Brian], don't come out here'.\" \"I'm 50 years of age, I don't want to get involved in this rubbish, besides, I'm not a fighter.\"
Sick Kids gets $5.1 million donation for stem cell research
[Freda Miller] is just one of four primary researchers whose work the cash gift will help fund over the next five years. The other researchers to benefit from the donation, Miller said, are Dr. Peter Dirks, a neurosurgeon and leading expert in brain tumours and cancer stem cells; Dr. Shoshana Wodak, director of the hospital's Centre for Computational Biology; and Dr. Janet Rossant, Sick Kids chief of research and a world-renowned expert in developmental biology. Her current research focuses on stem cell development and cell differentiation in the developing embryo - an important, yet controversial, area of research in the study of birth defects and regenerative medicine.
Finding may diffuse stem-cell controversy
Stem cells are the master cells from which other cells are created. [Freda Miller]'s team was able to isolate stem cells from a relatively easily accessible location -- the skin of humans and rodents -- similar to the way in which stem cells are isolated from the brain. The team's findings suggest adult stem cells can be found in a surprising and accessible place, she said. \"The ability to have an accessible source of human stem cells, even if they are adult stem cells (that) are not as multipotent (stem cells that can give rise to several other cell types but in limited numbers) as an embryonic stem cell, will have broad implications . . . for things like discovery research . . . screening for drugs and for certain kinds of cell therapy,\" she said.

Prior planning important for senior care
\"It's difficult to place your loved ones in a nursing home,\" says Freda Miller, caregiver support manager with the Northwest Missouri Area Agency on Aging. \"The stigma is still there that they are giving up a lot of their independence. It's emotional for the family and it's emotional for the person that's moving in.\" \"We are coming into a different group of seniors coming into these homes,\" she says. \"When you look at your loved ones, you want to know if that home is going to make your loved one adhere to their schedule, or if they are going to adhere to your loved one's schedule.\" \"It's always good to plan ahead and see how your loved ones feel about long-term care before the need arises,\" Ms. Miller says. \"It is their life and their opinion does matter.\"
Scientist excited about stem cell possibilities
If it does, the quadriplegic American actor may owe his recovery to Canadian scientist Freda Miller and her research team, who discovered last year that adult stem cells in the skin can replicate nervous system ones. Miller conceded it will be years before skin cells from someone with a spinal cord defect can be transformed into healthy central nervous system cells and reintroduced into that person, without rejection. \"We're very encouraged these cells in the skin are not specific to rodents but also occur in humans,\" said Miller.
