El español y el alemán en contraste y sus implicaciones didácticas
Esta obra consta de estudios contrastivos sobre el par de lenguas español-alemán, que se plantean desde una perspectiva eminentemente aplicada a la didáctica de las lenguas extranjeras y su traducción. Reúne análisis empíricos de fenómenos particulares de la fonética, la prosodia, la morfología, la sintaxis, la semántica y la pragmática, que ponen al descubierto semejanzas y diferencias entre ambos sistemas lingüísticos de gran relevancia en los procesos de adquisición y enseñanza. En el volumen se despliegan distintas propuestas metodológicas, como el empleo de corpus paralelos o de programas de traducción automática, y se discute críticamente su potencial y limitaciones en la aplicación a la enseñanza de idiomas extranjeros.
Emerging English Modals
This work is essentially based on grammaticalization theory – a branch of linguistics which has gained prominence since the 1980s. It focuses on the interaction between diachrony and synchrony, langue and parole or, for that matter, competence and performance, I–language and ?–language. It does not see these levels as distinct linguistic domains, as much structurally oriented work does. It is important for the present purposes that such an interactionist view entails that performance effects may over time cause new grammatical code relations. Hence the importance of statistical empirical research, which led the author to adopt a predominantly corpus-based approach.
Evidentiality and Epistemic Modality in Spanish (Semi-)Auxiliaries
This volume presents a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the Spanish evidential semi-auxiliaries parecer and resultar, the modal constructions with amenazar and prometer, and the modal auxiliaries poder, deber and tener que. These verbs have never been considered together in a global approach that transcends the classical \"verbal periphrases\" model. The book proposes a cognitive-functional account of evidentiality and modality in Spanish with special attention to subjectivity and grounding. The theoretical reflection relies on empirical evidence of two sorts: synchronic and diachronic corpus-analyses alternate with tests that measure the semantic and pragmatic compatibility of the evidential and epistemic constructions with specific sentences. Following the assumption that linguistic forms are determined by their meaning, the array of constructions that characterizes the different verbs justifies their grouping in three pairs of (semi-)auxiliaries: parecer vs resultar, amenazar vs prometer and poder vs deber/tener que. The distributional differences observed in the corpus are further shown to correlate with different degrees of grammaticalization. Primarily intended for scholars working in the field of Spanish functional linguistics, the monograph is also relevant for grammaticalization studies and for cognitive-semantic research at large. Given its combined theoretical and applied character, the volume is also of interest to anyone concerned with syntactic processes, lexical semantics or the wider area of discourse analysis and pragmatics.

English has several periphrastic verbal forms that are semantically close to particular modal verbs and perform suppletive functions in relation to them. After an exploration of the properties of potential periphrastic forms, this study investigates the nature of the relationship between the modals must, should, will and can and various semantically close periphrastics. The focus is on the pragmatic interpretation of the items compared, with some attention to their functions in discourse. Despite the relative idiosyncracy of all these items, the general marked status of periphrastics is evident, and this is shown to be reflected in a number of different ways. Level of formality is a further differentiating factor here.

The future of English linguistics as envisaged by the editors of Topics in English Linguistics lies in empirical studies which integrate work in English linguistics into general and theoretical linguistics on the one hand, and comparative linguistics on the other. The TiEL series features volumes that present interesting new data and analyses, and above all fresh approaches that contribute to the overall aim of the series, which is to further outstanding research in English linguistics.
The origin of American Black English : be-forms in the HOODOO texts
The study examines origins of the usage patterns of \"be\" forms (conjugated and invariant forms of the copula) in Black English as they developed over a period of about 30 years. The corpus studied consists of selected interviews from a collection of recordings about Hoodoo, conjuration, witchcraft, and rootwork made by a white priest with almost exclusively black informants in several southern and northern states in the 1930s and 1940s and again in 1970. An introductory chapter gives background to the topic and discusses terminology used. The second chapter describes the corpus and study methodology. Chapter three begins with several hypotheses concerning the invariant \"be\" and examines its usage patterns in the corpus under study. Conjugated, contracted, and zero-forms are considered in chapter four. Appended materials include a list of informants, notes on the tagging system, and a list of invariant \"be\"-forms. New-dialect formation in Canada : evidence from the English modal auxiliaries
This book details the development of eleven modal auxiliaries in late 18th- and 19th-century Canadian English in a framework of new-dialect formation. The study assesses features of the modal auxiliaries, tracing influences to British and American input varieties, parallel developments, or Canadian innovations. The findings are based on the Corpus of Early Ontario English, pre-Confederation Section, the first electronic corpus of early Canadian English. The data, which are drawn from newspapers, diaries and letters, include original transcriptions from manuscript sources and texts from semi-literate writers. While the overall results are generally coherent with new-dialect formation theory, the Ontarian context suggests a number of adaptations to the current model. In addition to its general Late Modern English focus, New-Dialect Formation in Canada traces changes in epistemic modal functions up to the present day, offering answers to the loss of root uses in the central modals. By comparing Canadian with British and American data, important theoretical insights on the origins of the variety are gained. The study offers a sociohistorical perspective on a still understudied variety of North American English by combining language-internal features with settlement history in this first monograph-length, diachronic treatment of Canadian English in real time.
