“Because It Is My Name!”: Arthur Miller’s Moral Imperative—The Crucible and Miller’s HUAC Testimony
The chief allegorical correlation between the text of The Crucible and Miller’s testimony before HUAC three years later in 1956 seems to center around the refusal of both the fabricated John Proctor and the real Arthur Miller to name names. This parallel has been cited by critics and scholars alike as one of the most ironic moments in the history of HUAC’s twenty-two-year existence. Each man, in his own era, publicly questioned the authority of the governmental agency entrusted with determining the guilt or innocence of members of the community. Each also defined themselves as martyrs in terms of their opposition to that authority. For Miller and Proctor, the moral dilemma involved a refusal to falsely confess and betray a sense of oneself to escape punishment. Forced to expose their private selves in a public arena, both felt the need to criticize the public challenge to their private consciousness.

From Invisible to Visible
Abstract Asian women are often marginalized in global contexts, and they are often disembodied or presented in sexualized images in film and television productions. Even in the Asian region, Asian women have difficulty giving themselves a voice in popular culture. This essay has selected three films and tends to explore the gender connotation, body, and sexuality in the film works of East Asian female directors in recent decades, with the intent to explore the female sexual desire that is expressed and reflected in those female directors’ works.
GLAMOUR WAVES: THE GOTHIC STORY OF MARILYN MONROE AS TOLD BY JOYCE CAROL OATES IN BLONDE
So much has been written about Marilyn Monroe that it seems impossible to break new ground regarding either her iconic persona or her sad life. However, Joyce Carol Oates draws on a vast biographical material, but also on Gothic tropes in order to make Marilyn Monroe a literary character in her own right. My paper tackles the way Oates’ novel mends the split between the real person and the actress’ onscreen charisma and assesses the significance of blondness – epitomized by the famous “glamour waves” haircut – in Monroe’s rise to stardom.
