Inge Morath : on style
\"Witty, playful, and effortlessly chic, 'Inge Morath: On Style' reveals the vital forms of fashion and self-expression that blossomed into existence in England, France, and the United States in the postwar decades. The book follows the photojournalist Inge Morath (1923-2002) through intimate sessions with Ingrid Bergman and Audrey Hepburn; scenes of window-shopping on Fifth Avenue; American girls discovering Paris; the frenetic splendor of society balls; and working women, from actresses to seamstresses to writers, everywhere taking their place in the world. The photographs in On Style focus on an extraordinary period of Morath's creativity, from the early 1950s to mid- 1960s, with a coda of work from later years\"--Publisher's description.
\I CANNOT PENETRATE THE SPIRIT\: INGE MORATH'S ROAD TO RENO
2022
Shea focuses on Road to Reno photograph series by Inge Morath. Photographs like Oconaluftee Village, from Morath's 1960 series, Road to Reno, relish the act of positioning and encountering such gazes and aversions among subjects that are looked at by viewers, but never fully seen. The images, taken during Morath's eighteen-day road trip with Henri Cartier-Bresson from New York to Reno, Nevada, feature a number of popular roadside attractions. And yet the more one looks at the photographs, the less they seem to show. Morath's images rarely present a full view, or what was thought to be notable about these places. Morath's Road to Reno photographs draw upon the familiarities of mid-century road travel but ultimately refuse to visualize the celebratory tropes associated with this overwhelmingly white, middle-class experience.

Adventurer With Brightly Colored Stories
1998
Ms. Morath, known best for her evocative portraits, swapped pictures for clothes with Balenciaga as a photographer in Paris and received a drawing from Picasso. She is famous for having saved Audie Murphy, the actor and war hero, from drowning in the late 50's, when he was in Mexico making a movie called ''The Unforgiven.'' Ms. Morath jumped into a cold mountain lake in her underwear, swam a half-mile, and dragged Mr. Murphy back by her bra strap. Ms. Morath is also famously married, to Arthur Miller. Mr. Miller, of course, was once married to Marilyn Monroe.
