REGISTER JOURNAL: Despite constant turnover, Morgan success continues
Walking into the gym and reading the years of accomplishments on our banners is sometimes intimidating. After 16 consecutive years of winning the Shoreline, what if we are the team to break the streak? How would it feel to be the seniors and captains of the team that ends [Morgan-Clinton] volleyball's chain of success? I hope to use the outcome of last year's team as a motivation and work hard to assist Morgan's volleyball program in another successful season.
Some conference seeds need planting
Cheshire, the Housatonic winner, Hand-Madison and Branford are in, but their seeding depends on what happens this week. The Rams will earn the fifth seed with wins over Shelton and Wilbur Cross. Branford faces East Haven and West Haven and Hand plays Hillhouse and Amity-Woodbridge. It's still too early to tell where these two teams will be seeded. As for the final spot, it's Guilford's to lose. The Indians face Foran-Milford and Mercy. A Guilford win over the Lions secures the Indians the eighth spot. However, if Guilford loses to Foran and Hamden beats Mercy today, the Green Dragons will complete the bracket. Morgan-Clinton (17-1, 15-1) is the No. 1 one seed followed by Old Lyme (15-3, 15-1), Haddam-Killingworth (12-6, 11-5) and North Branford (9-9, 9-7). Morgan and Old Lyme play tonight, but the Huskies still earn the top seed based on overall record. Morgan defeated the Wildcats 63-50 on Jan. 13.

MORGAN FINISHES AT THE TOP
Stats and such: Hale-Ray (10-10) of East Haddam qualified for the first time since 1994. All-SLC setter Caitlin Duby (426 assists) and Kristen Johnson (team-high 104 kills) led a solid senior class, but the Little Noises have built strong girls programs in other sports despite one of the smallest enrollments in the state. ... Glastonbury senior Allison Baker finished with 257 kills and 147 digs. ... [Morgan-Clinton]'s record streak of seven consecutive titles is safe for at least six more years, as there were no repeat state champions. ... [Maloney]'s record of state championships remained at 12, but Morgan tied Amity for second with nine. ... Darien is 7-0 in championship matches. Of Morgan's eight seniors, only Tara Vece played significant time when Morgan last won a state championship three years ago. Ashlee Fox battled a back injury all season to make contributions, Jessica Ward was outstanding in winning the championship match MVP and Kaitlyn Moran became a precise setter.
NFA FINDS A WAY PAST MANCHESTER FOR NO. 52 WILDCATS KEEP STREAK INTACT, ADVANCE TO LL SEMIFINALS
NFA needed all its experience and guile Saturday against Manchester in a Class LL quarterfinal. Sophomore forward Krista Rappahahn's 26 points helped too as top-seeded NFA defeated No. 9 Manchester 57- 53 at Bacon Academy in Colchester. Manchester (20-6) had previously given NFA its toughest challenge in a 65-61 game in December. The teams' contrasting styles made for two good games. Both teams rely primarily on a running game and man- to-man defense. But Manchester's half-court offense is predicated on a strong inside game and NFA has outstanding perimeter shooters. NFA opened quickly by scoring the first nine points. Manchester broke through with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter when Indians senior forward Tanya Iwanski (13 points) made a put-back. But after that, Manchester began to match NFA from the outside.
