Hear Me with Your Eyes
Hear Me with Your Eyes examines the intrusion of the voice into the cinematographic gaze and the intersections (and ruptures) of the sound-image in Argentine women filmmakers from a feminist perspective. In different ways, Maria Luisa Bemberg, Lita Stantic, Lucrecia Martel, Albertina Carri, Maria Victoria Menis, Lucia Puenzo, Sabrina Farji, Paula de Luque, Anahi Berneri, Sandra Gugliotta, and Gabriela David explore the visual realm through the continuities, intrusions, irrelevancies, harmonies, and desynchronizations of the voice. Or, instead, they explore different voices and their modulations, including whispers, screams, singing, echoes, breathing, resonance, sighs, and the transcendent voice, the narrative voice, the silenced voice, the articulated and unarticulated voice, and that which is none of the above. These voices suggest another relationship with the audiovisual realm, one that seems to include a closeness that erases, if only intermittently, the unalterable relationship between subject and object that characterizes the patriarchal visual regime.
Changing the Face of Argentinean Cinema: The...Voices of Four Women
\"In Argentina, as in most of Latin America, the film industry is not based on the studio structure of the United States, but rather it is underwritten by the government, with very little funding from the private sector. The Instituto Nacional de Cinematografia y Artes Audiovisuales (National Institute of Cinematography and Visual Arts, or INCAA) in Buenos Aires, a federal organization, has been one of the few funding agencies supporting innovative cinematic proposals...Despite the limitations and impediments created by the current economic climate, interest among young filmmakers still runs high...This article presents four young women filmmakers currently involved in significant projects. These cinematographers have not only studied at INCAA, but have also won prizes in various competitions organized by the agency and have been awarded funds for the production of their films.\" (AFTERIMAGE) This survey of women in Argentinean cinema highlights the works and philosophies of four innovative women filmmakers: Lucrecia Martel, Paula Hernandez, Vanessa Ragone and Julia Solomonoff.
