Witchcraft in Post-colonial Africa
This is a comparative ethnographic study of witchcraft and associated violence between the kingdoms of Kom and Venda in Cameroon and South Africa respectively. The book shows why despite its prevalence in both societies, witchcraft does not lead to open violence in Kom, while such large-scale violence is commonplace in Venda. It reveals that this difference can be explained by factors such as the variations in local ideas on witches, differences in the role of traditional authorities, and various state interventions on witchcraft matters. The book demonstrates, through a rich collection of detailed cases, that contrary to anthropological theory that views witchcraft as a mechanism for the expression and resolution of social tensions and conflicts, witchcraft may at times become a disturbance of amicable social relations. Witchcraft accusations may occur in a context where strained social relations have not preceded them. The knowledge and experience that people have about witchcraft is sufficient to trigger an accusation and a violent reaction. Different forms of witchcraft account for variations in witchcraft attributions and accusations. This comparison provides a valuable contribution to ongoing witchcraft policy discourse amid widespread citizen anxiety over witchcraft, and the increasing call on the post-colonial state to intervene and protect its citizens against occult aggression.
Exploring the interplay between a loving pedagogy, creativity, and work engagement among EFL/ESL teachers: A multinational study
This study investigates the validity of three psychometric scales—the Disposition towards Loving Pedagogy (DTLP), Teaching for Creativity Scale (TCS), and Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES)—to uncover the relationship between these constructs with a multinational cohort of language teachers. The results obtained from Exploratory Factor Analysis and Confirmatory Factor Analysis confirmed the psychometric properties of the three scales. The hypothesized model for the relationship between participants’ DTLP, TCS, and their UWES revealed that although both predictor variables significantly predicted UWES, TCS was a stronger predictor for UWES. The model was also tested for measurement invariance across ethnicity and gender. By drawing on the findings obtained in this study, future language researchers are aided to employ the three revalidated scales in their research undertakings on a cross- or multi-cultural scale, and increase expansion of culture-centered research on various teacher personality variables with the aim of precipitating language teachers’ continuing professional development.
Social connectedness: what matters to older people?
While social connectedness is heralded as a key enabler of positive health and social outcomes for older people, rarely have they themselves had the opportunity to express their views about the concept. Working with a diverse group of Pacific, Māori, Asian and New Zealand European older adults, this paper explores what matters to older people when discussing social connectedness? We draw from individual, in-depth interviews with 44 older adults, and three group interviews comprising 32 older adults. Data were analysed using thematic and narrative analyses. The three themes identified were: getting out of the house, ability to connect and feelings of burden. Fundamental to social connectedness was participants’ desire to be recognised as resourceful agents able to foster relationships on the basis of mutual respect. Social connectedness was conceptualised as multi-levelled: relating to interpersonal relationships as much as neighbourhoods and wider society. Alongside these similarities we also discuss important differences. Participants preferred to socialise with people from similar cultural backgrounds where they shared taken-for-granted social customs and knowledges. This is in the context where racism, poverty and inequalities clearly impeded already minoritised participants’ sense of social connection. Key structural ways to improve social connectedness should focus on factors that enable cohesion between levels of connection, including stable neighbourhoods serviced with accessible public transport, liveable pensions and inclusivity of cultural diversity.
White Over Black
In 1968, Winthrop D. Jordan set out in encyclopedic detail the evolution of white Englishmen's and Anglo-Americans' perceptions of blacks, perceptions of difference used to justify race-based slavery, and liberty and justice for whites only. This second edition, with new forewords by historians Christopher Leslie Brown and Peter H. Wood, reminds us that Jordan's text is still the definitive work on the history of race in America in the colonial era. Every book published to this day on slavery and racism builds upon his work; all are judged in comparison to it; none has surpassed it.
Integrating spirituality into the care of older adults
We examine how to sensibly integrate spirituality into the care of older adult medical and psychiatric patients from a multi-cultural perspective. First, definitions of spirituality and spiritual integration are provided. Second, we examine the logic that justifies spiritual integration, including research that demonstrates an association between religious/spiritual (R/S) involvement and health in older adults and research that indicates widespread spiritual needs in later life and the consequences of addressing or ignoring them. Third, we describe how and when to integrate spirituality into the care of older adults, i.e. taking a spiritual history to identify spiritual needs and then mobilizing resources to meet those needs. Fourth, we examine the consequences of integrating spirituality on the well-being of patients and on the doctor–patient relationship. Finally, we describe boundaries in addressing R/S issues that clinicians should be cautious about violating. Resources will be provided to assist with all of the above.
Parental Perception of Children’s Online Behaviour: A Study on Ethnic Communities in Australia
The overwhelming growth of the Internet in all spheres of life poses new challenges for young children growing up in the digital age, with potential short- and long-term ramifications. Parents have an essential role in the development of the attitudes and behaviour of their children. However, studies indicate that adults are not adequately mitigating the range of cyber risks that children face and that parent-oriented solutions are simply inadequate. This study attempts to fill research gaps in the status and nature of parents’ perceptions of the online use of their children in Australia based on their ethnic background. This study adopted a mixed-method approach, surveying 204 parents from different ethnic communities in Australia followed by 16 in-depth interviews and three focus-group discussions. The results indicate that parents’ perceptions of online risk for children differ based on their ethnicity, cultural adaptation, gender, and age. Parents from multicultural societies are less equipped to deal with cyber threats that their children face and are ill-equipped to monitor and mitigate the risks posed. The results of this study have important policy implications, from deepening our understanding of the nature of the problems to facilitating the development of short- and long-term strategies, appropriate information systems, policy guidelines, and interventions.
Italians in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Second Half of the Sixteenth Century
This article deals with Italian immigration to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the second half of the sixteenth century by trying to disclose what mechanisms were at play in the process of their integration into the host society. It also attempts to highlight localities and fields of activities in which the demand for services provided by Italians was felt most acutely. Integration on the part of the Italians proceeded for the most part by their providing loyal service and establishing patron-client relations with their paymasters, and by staying in touch with one another in a network of mutual assistance. Crucial importance in the process of integration through assimilation within an adopted country must be ascribed to the mixed marriages concluded between Italian men and local women. This study draws heavily on hitherto untapped material contained in the official records of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, conventionally known as the Lithuanian Metrica.
A Transcultural Perspective of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus–Related Fatigue: Systematic Review and Narrative Synthesis
Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) worldwide, yet it remains poorly assessed and managed. The lack of universal definition and standard measurement of fatigue may add to the continued limitations in its understanding across cultures. The psycho-sociocultural underpinnings of fatigue are understudied; therefore, in this paper, we conducted a systematic review to understand a transcultural perspective of SLE-related fatigue. Following PRISMA (Preferred Reporting items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis) systematic review guidelines, we searched CINAHL Complete, Scopus, and PubMed databases for all published articles covered until the search date. Search was expanded using citation and web search. A 3-step process was used to identify articles meeting the inclusion criteria. The results were analyzed using narrative synthesis. From a total of 370 (n=364, 98.4% scientific databases; n=6, 1.6% web and citation search) articles searched, 18 (4.9%) studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria and were included in this review. All (18/18, 100%) studies enrolled primarily female participants, and half (9/18, 50%) had cross-sectional designs. Although race was not reported in all studies, most studies had White racial background as the largest proportion of their samples. A majority (7/18, 39%) of the studies were conducted in the United States. Using a narrative synthesis, the prominent themes drawn based on the domains of the culture care theory (CCT) and the sunrise enabler were as follows: SLE-related fatigue (1) as an integral component of the disease process, (2) as a personal challenge, and (3) as a psychosocial dimension. CCT and sunrise enabler by Leininger guided this review. There are still gaps on how other domains of the CCT and sunrise enabler might influence SLE-related fatigue experience, assessment, and evaluation. The findings from this review showed that SLE-related fatigue has disease, personal, and psychosocial components. Thus, a purely subjective assessment of fatigue in SLE and even other conditions may limit a more accurate assessment and management. The inclusion of disease, personal, and psychosocial indicators is warranted and essential. A culturally sensitive and congruent assessment as well as evaluation models and measurement tools should be developed to capture fatigue experiences accurately. In addition, since global migration is inevitable, advancement in symptom management strategies should coincide with the understanding that fatigue has subjective and objective indicators present across cultures.
Organizational memory: a qualitative research study on a multi-cultural organization
PurposeThis paper articulates a multi-contextual and dynamic system for memory research in relation to multi-cultural organizations (MCOs) by a qualitative research method.Design/methodology/approachFace-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted with representatives of 30 national officers in North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to illuminate how the construction of organizational memory (OM) can then be compared and contrasted across different cultures.FindingsThe findings show that OM still mostly resides in individuals with the social transfer. However, even if, cultural aspects define what should be stored, time and purpose, the static memory of individuals becomes dynamic OM that is represented and interpreted in an organization's practices, policies and learning.Originality/valueThe primary contribution is to attempt to dissolve the seeming assumption of dialectical metaphoric perspectives of OM between different but related sub-communities of practice and outcomes. Consequently, socially constructed and individual memory models are necessary to integrate different metaphors according to the multi-context theory, which extends the understanding of the diversity between the cultural backgrounds of individuals and groups.
The Colored Conventions Movement
This volume of essays is the first to focus on the Colored Conventions movement, the nineteenth century's longest campaign for Black civil rights. Well before the founding of the NAACP and other twentieth-century pillars of the civil rights movement, tens of thousands of Black leaders organized state and national conventions across North America. Over seven decades, they advocated for social justice and against slavery, protesting state-sanctioned and mob violence while demanding voting, legal, labor, and educational rights. While Black-led activism in this era is often overshadowed by the attention paid to the abolition movement, this collection centers Black activist networks, influence, and institution building. Collectively, these essays highlight the vital role of the Colored Conventions in the lives of thousands of early organizers, including many of the most famous writers, ministers, politicians, and entrepreneurs in the long history of Black activism.
