Effects of family function, depression, and self-perceived burden on loneliness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a serial multiple mediation model
Background Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a major lifestyle disease endangering human health worldwide. Patients with T2DM face varying degrees of loneliness, which adversely affects their family and the larger society. This study investigates the serial multiple mediating roles of depression and self-perceived burden between family function and loneliness in the T2DM population of China. Methods In total, 260 T2DM patients were included. They rated themselves based on UCLA Loneliness Scale, Self-Rating Depression Scale, Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Family Care Index, and Self-Perceived Burden Scale. Pearson and Spearman correlation analyses were conducted to clarify the association among variables. The SPSS macro-PROCESS program was used for a series of multiple mediation analyses. Results Family function, depression, self-perceived burden, and loneliness were significantly correlated ( P  < 0.01). Family function not only has a direct negative impact (effect = -2.809; SE = 0.213; 95%CI: LL = -3.228, UL = -2.390) on loneliness, but also has an indirect impact on loneliness through the independent mediating role of depression (effect = -0.862; SE = 0.165; 95%CI: LL = -1.202, UL = -0.567) and self-perceived burden (effect = -0.288; SE = 0.107; 95%CI: LL = -0.525, UL = -0.114) and the chain mediating role of depression and self-perceived burden (effect = -0.202; SE = 0.066; 95%CI: LL = -0.342, UL = -0.088). Conclusions Diversified interventions aimed at improving family function of T2DM patients would help in reducing the level of depression and self-perceived burden, and ultimately reducing loneliness.
How resilient safety culture correct unsafe behavior of new generation of construction workers: the mediating effects of job crafting and perceived work meaningfulness
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore the correction mechanism of resilient safety culture on new generation of construction workers (NGCWs)' unsafe behavior and test the multiple mediation effects of job crafting and perceived work meaningfulness based on the context of Chinese construction industry in order to find a new way to effectively correct the NGCWs' unsafe behavior.Design/methodology/approachA theoretical model of correction mechanism was established based on literature research and theoretical deduction. An empirical study was employed based on confirmatory factor analysis and regression analysis with a sample of 404 NGCWs in China.FindingsThe results indicated that resilient safety culture can effectively correct NGCWs' unsafe behavior through job crafting and perceived work meaningfulness. Job crafting and perceived work meaningfulness can play independent and serial mediating roles between resilient safety culture and unsafe behavior.Research limitations/implicationsResearch results only represent a short-term law about the correction mechanism of NGCWs' unsafe behavior based on a questionnaire study from China's construction industry. It is necessary to continue to implement a longitudinal study to test it in a relatively long period in future research. The findings also need to be verified based on the young construction workers in other countries.Practical implicationsThis study provides a theoretical basis and feasible management reference for construction enterprises in China to correct NGCWs' unsafe behavior from the perspective of resilient safety culture. Furthermore, the construction of resilient safety culture in construction enterprises can help NGCWs better carry out job crafting and perceive the meaning of work.Originality/valueThis paper clarifies the correction mechanism of resilient safety culture on unsafe behavior of NGCWs, and further tests the independent mediating roles and a serial mediating role of job crafting and perceived work meaningfulness between resilient safety culture and unsafe behavior, which fills the research gap about the influence mechanism of resilient safety culture on young construction workers' unsafe behavior and enriches the theoretical system of unsafe behavior correction of construction workers.
Digital economy's impact on green innovation efficiency: bottom-up or top-down?
The development of the digital economy provides crucial support and impetus for enhancing green innovation efficiency. This connection between the digital economy and green innovation manifests in many dimensions. While within the research on the pathways through which the digital economy influences green innovation, the sequential order of these transmission pathways is of paramount importance. This bears significant implications for optimizing resource allocation, enhancing the efficiency of green innovation, and providing guidance for government policy formulation. This study utilizes data from 30 provinces in China from 2012 to 2021 and employs the SBM-DDF model considering undesired output to estimate green innovation efficiency. Furthermore, a multiple mediation model is constructed from three levels: macro-environment, industrial structure, and micro-enterprises, in order to investigate the transmission mechanism of the impact of the digital economy on green innovation efficiency. The research findings indicate that the rapid development of the digital economy significantly improves the regional green innovation efficiency, and this conclusion remains valid after conducting robustness tests. Additionally, there is a lagging effect in the enhancement of green innovation efficiency from the digital economy. The digital business environment, coordination of industrial structure, and level of enterprise digital transformation play significant mediating and moderating roles in the relationship between the digital economy and regional green innovation efficiency. In the chain mediation effect model, the impact of the digital economy on green innovation efficiency follows a \"bottom-up\" transmission process, while the 3-Layer chain mediation effect of the digital economy on green innovation efficiency is almost negligible.
How does population aging affect carbon emissions?—analysis based on the multiple mediation effect model
This paper explores the effect mechanism of population aging on carbon dioxide emissions using provincial panel data in China from 2005 to 2019 and examines how aging affects carbon dioxide emissions through stepwise regression test and Sobel test respectively by constructing a multiple mediating effect model. The following conclusions have been drawn: (1) the results of the baseline regression show that population aging has a significant inhibitory effect on carbon emissions. (2) The results of intermediary effect test show that the intermediary effect of population aging through technological progress, industrial structure, consumption level, and consumption structure is significant. (3) The results of heterogeneity test show that the mediating effect of technological progress is not significant in the eastern region, central region, and western region, and the mediating effect of industrial structure and consumption structure is significant in the eastern region and central region, and the mediating effect of consumption level is significant in the eastern region and western region. (4) The results of the robustness test also verify the mediating effect conclusion once again and prove the robustness of the results. Overall, as an aging society country, China should take the impact of aging into consideration more in the process of achieving emission peak and carbon neutrality.
Urinary incontinence and subjective well-being among Chinese old adults: the multiple mediation effect of social participation and sleep quality
Background China has become an aging country. The subjective well-being of the older people is one of the important indicators to measure the health and quality of life of the older people, and it is a concentrated reflection of the overall spiritual life of the older people. Therefore, to achieve successful aging, this study aimed to examine the sequential multiple mediating effects of social participation and sleep quality between urinary incontinence and subjective well-being in the Chinese older people population. Methods Based on the 2018 China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset, a total of 10,068 Chinese seniors aged 65 and above were selected. First, the basic socio-demographic characteristics of the sample population were described. Second, Spearman correlation analysis was conducted to examine the associations among urinary incontinence, social participation, sleep quality, and subjective well-being in older adults. Finally, sequential multiple mediation analysis was performed using the SPSS macro PROCESS 4.0 to assess the potential mediating roles of social participation and sleep quality. Results Urinary incontinence, social participation, sleep quality, and subjective well-being were significantly correlated ( P  < 0.01). Urinary incontinence is not only directly associated with the subjective well-being of the older people (effect = 0.9195;) Standard error = 0.1572; 95%CI: LL = 0.6115, UL = 1.2276), and also through the independent mediating effect of social participation (effect = 0.1508; Standard error = 0.0180; 95%CI: LL = 0.1178, UL = 0.1880), the independent mediating effect of sleep quality (effect = 0.2046; Standard error = 0.0495; 95%CI: LL = 0.1067, UL = 0.3004), the chain mediating effect between social participation and sleep quality (effect = 0.3670; Standard error = 0.0531; 95%CI: LL = 0.2601, UL = 0.4720) was associated with subjective well-being. Conclusions Studies have shown that the social participation and sleep quality of older people in China can mediate the connection between urinary incontinence and subjective well-being. Therefore, it is necessary to pay timely attention to and intervene in the social participation and sleep quality of older patients with urinary incontinence to improve their subjective well-being.
Indoor ventilation frequency and cognitive function among Chinese old adults: the multiple mediation effect of anxiety and self-rated health
Background China is experiencing an increasingly serious aging population. Cognitive function is an important factor and guarantee for the quality of life of older people. Therefore, to achieve healthy aging, this study aimed to examine the sequential multiple mediating effects of indoor ventilation frequency and cognitive function on anxiety and self-rated health in the Chinese older people population. Methods Using the 2018 China Longitudinal Health and Longevity Survey (CLHLS) dataset, we finally selected 10,372 Chinese seniors over the age of 65. First, we describe the basic socio-demographic information of the sample population. Second, Spearman correlation analysis was used to determine whether there was a correlation between indoor ventilation frequency, anxiety, self-rated health, and cognitive function among Chinese older people. Finally, the SPSS macro process program was used to complete the sequence multiple mediation analysis. Results Indoor ventilation frequency, anxiety, self-rated health and cognitive function were significantly correlated ( p  < 0.01). Indoor ventilation frequency not only has a direct positive impact on the cognitive function of older people (effect = 0.1427; Standard error = 0.0201; 95%CI: LL = 0.1034, UL = 0.1821), but also indirectly affected cognitive function through three pathways: independent mediation of anxiety (effect = 0.0078; Standard error = 0.0021; 95%CI: LL = 0.0041, UL = 0.0121), independent mediating effect of self-rated health (effect = 0.0154; Standard error = 0.0030; 95%CI: LL = 0.0098, UL = 0.0215), and the chain mediating effect between anxiety and self-rated health (effect = 0.0046; Standard error = 0.0009; 95%CI: LL = 0.0029, UL = 0.0065). Limitations All projects are self-reported and some results may be biased. In the future, it may be more inspiring to explore more detailed and specific effects of indoor air quality on cognitive function in older people. Conclusions Studies have shown that indoor ventilation frequency can improve cognitive function by reducing anxiety and improving self-rated health in older people Chinese. Encouraging older adults to increase the frequency of indoor ventilation will benefit their mental health and cognitive function. Highlights This study provides empirical evidence for the association between indoor ventilation frequency and cognitive function in older people Chinese adults. We used nationally representative data to investigate the relationship between indoor ventilation frequency and cognitive function and further explored the mediating role of anxiety and self-rated health in Chinese older adults. Indoor ventilation frequency can not only directly affect cognitive function in older people, but also indirectly affect cognitive function through anxiety and self-rated health. Anxiety and self-rated health have a series of mediating effects between indoor ventilation frequency and cognitive function.
Mindfulness and special education teachers' burnout: The serial multiple mediation effects of self-acceptance and perceived stress
We used a serial multiple mediation model of self-acceptance and perceived stress to investigate the relationship between mindfulness and burnout in Chinese special education teachers. Altogether, 307 participants completed the Mindful Attention Awareness Scale, Self-Acceptance Questionnaire, Perceived Stress Scale, and Teacher Burnout Inventory. Results showed that self-acceptance and perceived stress had significant serial multiple mediation effects on the relationship between mindfulness and burnout. Perceived stress also partially mediated the effect of mindfulness on burnout. However, self-acceptance did not have a mediation effect on the relationship between mindfulness and burnout. A practical implication of these findings is that increased use of mindfulness and greater self-acceptance may, as well as reducing perceived stress, help prevent and/or alleviate burnout among special education teachers.
Perceived Parenting Styles and Mental Health: The Multiple Mediation Effect of Perfectionism and Altruistic Behavior
Background: According to the ecological systems theory, the microsystems are important during the development process because they have direct effects on immediate and proximal factors that shape human development. The theory identifies the family as a microsystem that has profound influence on development since it is the immediate environment in which individuals live. This study explored the multiple mediation effect of perfectionism and altruistic behavior on the association between perceived parenting styles and mental health. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, convenience cluster sampling was used, and the purpose was empirically examined by means of an online questionnaire survey. This study adopted the Demographic Questionnaire, short-form Egna Minnen Betraffande Uppfostran, Chinese Frost Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale, Self-Reported Altruism Scale, and General Health Questionnaire to conduct measurements in 525 university students. Results: The results of the correlation analysis revealed that perceived parenting styles were significantly correlated to perfectionism, altruistic behavior, and mental health. In addition, perfectionism and altruistic behavior were significantly correlated to mental health, while negative perfectionism was not correlated to altruistic behavior. The results of the structural equation model analysis indicated that parental rejection and emotional warmth had direct and significant effects on children's mental health. Positive perfectionism and altruistic behavior not only played partial mediating roles between parental emotional warmth and children's mental health but also exerted a chain multiple mediation effect. Altruistic behavior played a partial mediating role between positive perfectionism and mental health. Conclusion: Therefore, parents should practice positive parenting styles such as parental emotional warmth toward their children to ensure that positive perfectionism and altruistic behavioral tendency improve mental health. Keywords: perceived parenting styles, perfectionism, altruistic behavior, mental health, multiple mediation effect
Motivation of Students’ Persistency for Online Learning under Multiple Mediation Effect
This paper probed deep into the motivation of students’ persistency for online learning from the perspective of user experience of online learning platforms, in the purpose of increasing user stickiness and formulating effective operation strategies in a targeted manner. Existing studies on the motivation of students’ persistency for online learning mostly focus on theories, while few of them have talked about the problem with the multiple mediation effect taken into consideration, for this reason, this paper aims to fill in this research gap and explore the mechanism behind the motivation of students to carry out online learning persistently under the multiple mediation effect. At first, this paper built an improved support vector machine (SVM) classifier and used it to predict the duration of students' online learning; then, it adopted a structural equation model to analyze the data of students’ willingness to continue online learning; after that, this paper gave a theoretical analysis on the motivation of students’ persistency for online learning under multiple mediation effect, and constructed a basic regression model for the said matter; at last, this paper employed experimental results to verify the prediction accuracy of the constructed model, and gave the corresponding estimation results.
