Exercise-induced fatigue causes changes within the central nervous system that decrease force production capacity in fatigued muscles. The impact on unrelated, non-exercised muscle performance is still unclear. The primary aim of this study was to examine the impact of a bilateral forearm muscle contraction on the motor function of the distal and unrelated ankle plantar-flexor muscles. The secondary aim was to compare the impact of maximal and submaximal forearm contractions on the non-fatigued ankle plantar-flexor muscles. Maximal voluntary contractions (MVC) of the forearm and ankle plantar-flexor muscles as well as voluntary activation (VA) and twitch torque of the ankle plantar-flexor muscles were assessed pre-fatigue and throughout a 10-min recovery period. Maximal (100 % MVC) and submaximal (30 % MVC) sustained isometric handgrip contractions caused a decreased handgrip MVC (to 49.3 ± 15.4 and 45.4 ± 11.4 % of the initial MVC for maximal and submaximal contraction, respectively) that remained throughout the 10-min recovery period. The fatigue protocols also caused a decreased ankle plantar-flexor MVC (to 77 ± 8.3 and 92.4 ± 6.2 % of pre-fatigue MVC for maximal and submaximal contraction, respectively) and VA (to 84.3 ± 15.7 and 97.7 ± 16.1 % of pre-fatigue VA for maximal and submaximal contraction, respectively). These results suggest central fatigue created by the fatiguing handgrip contraction translated to the performance of the non-exercised ankle muscles. Our results also show that the maximal fatigue protocol affected ankle plantar-flexor MVC and VA more severely than the submaximal protocol, highlighting the task-specificity of neuromuscular fatigue.

Effects of squat training with different depths on lower limb muscle volumes

PurposeThe purpose of this study was to compare the effects of squat training with different depths on lower limb muscle volumes.MethodsSeventeen males were randomly assigned to a full squat training group (FST, n = 8) or half squat training group (HST, n = 9). They completed 10 weeks (2 days per week) of squat training. The muscle volumes (by magnetic resonance imaging) of the knee extensor, hamstring, adductor, and gluteus maximus muscles and the one repetition maximum (1RM) of full and half squats were measured before and after training.ResultsThe relative increase in 1RM of full squat was significantly greater in FST (31.8 ± 14.9%) than in HST (11.3 ± 8.6%) (p = 0.003), whereas there was no difference in the relative increase in 1RM of half squat between FST (24.2 ± 7.1%) and HST (32.0 ± 12.1%) (p = 0.132). The volumes of knee extensor muscles significantly increased by 4.9 ± 2.6% in FST (p < 0.001) and 4.6 ± 3.1% in HST (p = 0.003), whereas that of rectus femoris and hamstring muscles did not change in either group. The volumes of adductor and gluteus maximus muscles significantly increased in FST (6.2 ± 2.6% and 6.7 ± 3.5%) and HST (2.7 ± 3.1% and 2.2 ± 2.6%). In addition, relative increases in adductor (p = 0.026) and gluteus maximus (p = 0.008) muscle volumes were significantly greater in FST than in HST.ConclusionThe results suggest that full squat training is more effective for developing the lower limb muscles excluding the rectus femoris and hamstring muscles.

Context:Findings of studies of testosterone’s effects on muscle strength and physical function in older men have been inconsistent; its effects on muscle power and fatigability have not been studied.Objective:To determine the effects of testosterone administration for 3 years in older men on muscle strength, power, fatigability, and physical function.Design, Setting, and Participants:This was a double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial of healthy men ≥60 years old with total testosterone levels of 100 to 400 ng/dL or free testosterone levels <50 pg/mL.Interventions:Random assignment to 7.5 g of 1% testosterone or placebo gel daily for 3 years.Outcome Measures:Loaded and unloaded stair-climbing power, muscle strength, power, and fatigability in leg press and chest press exercises, and lean mass at baseline, 6, 18, and 36 months.Results:The groups were similar at baseline. Testosterone administration for 3 years was associated with significantly greater performance in unloaded and loaded stair-climbing power than placebo (mean estimated between-group difference, 10.7 W [95% confidence interval (CI), −4.0 to 25.5], P = 0.026; and 22.4 W [95% CI, 4.6 to 40.3], P = 0.027), respectively. Changes in chest-press strength (estimated mean difference, 16.3 N; 95% CI, 5.5 to 27.1; P < 0.001) and power (mean difference 22.5 W; 95% CI, 7.5 to 37.5; P < 0.001), and leg-press power were significantly greater in men randomized to testosterone than in those randomized to placebo. Lean body mass significantly increased more in the testosterone group.Conclusion:Compared with placebo, testosterone replacement in older men for 3 years was associated with modest but significantly greater improvements in stair-climbing power, muscle mass, and power. Clinical meaningfulness of these treatment effects and their impact on disability in older adults with functional limitations remains to be studied.Testosterone replacement in older men for 3 years was associated with modest but significantly greater improvements in muscle power and physical function compared with placebo.

BackgroundThe architectural and morphological adaptations of the hamstrings in response to training with different exercises have not been explored.PurposeTo evaluate changes in biceps femoris long head (BFLH) fascicle length and hamstring muscle size following 10-weeks of Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) or hip extension (HE) training.Methods30 recreationally active male athletes (age, 22.0±3.6 years; height, 180.4±7 cm; weight, 80.8±11.1 kg) were allocated to 1 of 3 groups: (1) HE training (n=10), NHE training (n=10), or no training (control, CON) (n=10). BFLH fascicle length was assessed before, during (Week 5) and after the intervention with a two-dimensional ultrasound. Hamstring muscle size was determined before and after training via MRI.ResultsCompared with baseline, BFLH fascicles were lengthened in the NHE and HE groups at mid-training (d=1.12–1.39, p<0.001) and post-training (d=1.77–2.17, p<0.001) and these changes did not differ significantly between exercises (d=0.49–0.80, p=0.279–0.976). BFLH volume increased more for the HE than the NHE (d=1.03, p=0.037) and CON (d=2.24, p<0.001) groups. Compared with the CON group, both exercises induced significant increases in semitendinosus volume (d=2.16–2.50, ≤0.002) and these increases were not significantly different (d=0.69, p=0.239).ConclusionNHE and HE training both stimulate significant increases in BFLH fascicle length; however, HE training may be more effective for promoting hypertrophy in the BFLH.

Previous studies attempted to compare the effectiveness of isokinetic and isotonic training. However, they have provided conflicting results. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of isotonic versus isokinetic standardized concentric strength training programs of the knee extensors on the neuromuscular system. The standardization of these two training programs was ensured by the equalization of the total external amount of work performed and the mean angular movement velocity. = 8) group. Both IT and IK groups trained their dominant lower leg 3 sessions/week for 8 weeks on a dynamometer. The IT group exercised using a preset torque of 40% of the maximal voluntary isometric torque at 70° (0° = leg in horizontal position). . Isotonic, isokinetic and isometric tests were performed on a dynamometer before and after strength training. Surface electromyographic activity of

muscles was recorded during the tests. Significant strength increases in both dynamic and static conditions were noticed for IT and IK groups without any significant difference between the two trained groups. Agonist muscle activity also increased with training but no change in antagonist muscle co-activity was observed. The two training methods could be proposed by clinicians and athletic coaches to improve concentric muscle strength in dynamic and static conditions.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the post-activation potentiation (PAP) effects following eccentric overload (EOL) and traditional weightlifting (TW) exercise on standing long jump (SLJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), and 5 m sprint acceleration performance. Ten male athletes were involved in a randomized, crossover study. The subjects performed 3 sets of 6 repetitions of EOL or TW half squat exercise followed by SLJ, CMJ, and 5 m sprint tests at 1 min, 3 min and 7 min, in separate sessions using a randomized order. Bayes factor (BF10) was reported to show the strength of the evidence. Differences were found using EOL for SLJ distance at 3 min (BF10 = 7.24, +8%), and 7 min (BF10 = 19.5, +7%), for CMJ at 3 min (BF10 = 3.25, +9%), and 7 min (BF10 = 4.12, +10.5%). Differences were found using TW exercise for SLJ at 3 min (BF10 = 3.88, +9%), and 7 min (BF10 = 12.4, +9%), CMJ at 3 min (BF10 = 7.42, +9.5%), and 7 min (BF10 = 12.4, +12%). No meaningful differences were found between EOL and TW exercises for SLJ (BF10 = 0.33), CMJ (BF10 = 0.27), and 5 m sprint (BF10 = 0.22). In conclusion, EOL and TW exercises acutely increase SLJ and CMJ, but not 5 m sprint performance. The PAP time window was found between 3 min and 7 min using both protocols. This study did not find differences between EOL and TW exercises, and so both methodologies can be used to stimulate a PAP response.

Effect of Plyometric Training on Handspring Vault Performance and Functional Power in Youth Female Gymnasts

This study aimed to determine the effect of plyometric training (PT) when added to habitual gymnastic training (HT) on handspring vault (HV) performance variables. Twenty youth female competitive gymnasts (Age: 12.5 ± 1.67 y) volunteered to participate and were randomly assigned to two independent groups. The experimental plyometric training group (PTG) undertook a six-week plyometric program, involving two additional 45 min PT sessions a week, alongside their HT, while the control group (CG) performed regular HT only. Videography was used (120 Hz) in the sagittal plane to record both groups performing three HVs for both the baseline and post-intervention trials. Furthermore, participants completed a countermovement jump test (CMJ) to assess the effect of PT on functional power. Through the use of Quintic biomechanics software, significant improvements (P < 0.05) were found for the PTG for run-up velocity, take-off velocity, hurdle to board distance, board contact time, table contact time and post-flight time and CMJ height. However, there were no significant improvements on pre-flight time, shoulder angle or hip angle on the vault for the PTG. The CG demonstrated no improvement for all HV measures. A sport-specific PT intervention improved handspring vault performance measures and functional power when added to the habitual training of youth female gymnasts. The additional two hours plyometric training seemingly improved the power generating capacity of movement-specific musculature, which consequently improved aspects of vaulting performance. Future research is required to examine the whether the improvements are as a consequence of the additional volume of sprinting and jumping activities, as a result of the specific PT method or a combination of these factors.
