When Cymbals Become Symbols: Conflict Over Organizational Identity Within a Symphony Orchestra
2000
In this qualitative field study, I explore how the construction of a cultural institution's identity is related to the construction of strategic capabilities and resources. I investigated the 1996 musicians strike at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO), which revealed embedded and latent identity conflicts. The multifaceted and specialized identity of the ASO was reinforced by different professional groups in the organization: the ideologies of musicians and administrators emphasized institutional resource allocations consistent with the legitimating values of their professions, i.e., artistic excellence versus economic utility. These identity claims, made under organizational crisis, accounted for variations in the construction of core competencies. I propose a model that explicates how the construction of core capabilities lies at the intersection of identification and interpretive processes in organizations. Implications are discussed for defining firm capabilities in cultural institutions and for managing organizational forms characterized by competing claims over institutional identity, resources, and core capabilities.

Innovation and Selection: Symphony Orchestras and the Construction of the Musical Canon in the United States (1879–1959)
2010
This article analyzes the determinants of innovation and success of innovation in the field of U.S. symphony orchestras from 1879 through 1959: why did major orchestras (N = 27) innovate by introducing works of new composers to the repertoire instead of sticking to canonical pieces? Can organizational processes account for the selection and the popularization of new composers in the repertoire? By integrating field theory and organizational theory, this analysis shows that orchestra and musical director consecration and local elite cohesiveness favored innovative programming. Composers introduced by consecrated actors and entering the repertoire at a time of low competition with established composers and high field-level innovation were more likely to survive in the repertoire and have their works performed frequently. These effects became magnified throughout composers' careers.

Great Expectations? The Changing Role of Audiovisual Incongruence in Contemporary Multimedia
2017
Film-music combinations that have been labeled as inappropriate, misfitting, or incongruent are often also described as unexpected audiovisual pairings. Various strands of academic research observe a prevalence of such constructions in contemporary multimedia, which arguably implies that such pairings are less surprising or unexpected than they once might have been. This article identifies three types of audiovisual incongruence from recent multimedia, and discusses these in relation to psychological theories of expectation and ideas from semiotics, which facilitate consideration of any potential disjunction between authorial intent and perceiver reception of a work.
