Recent international conferences on human rights and population have sought a common definition of reproductive rights with some urgency. Commonalities between Western tradition and Islam on this issue are explored.

During the preparatory period leading up to the UN Conference on Women in Beijing in 1995, regional and international Islamic institutions participated in an unprecedented way. 1 They issued a number of statements and documents outlining the Islamic position towards the Conference and the draftPlatform for Action. This change on the part of the Islamic political tendency deserves both attention and analysis. It constitutes a new strategy for dealing with women's issues in the international arena and reflects a clear understanding of the conspicuous defeat of the Islamic political tendency's ideas in the International Conference on Population and Development. Yet their most outstanding documents during the Beijing conference indicate that this new strategy does not signify any real change in the substance of their views as far as women's issues are concerned, as this paper will show. Des institutions islamiques régionales et internationales ont pris une part sans précédent aux préparatifs de la Conférence sur les Femmes, qui s'est tenue en 1995 á Beijing sous l'égide de l'Organisation des Nations Unies. Elles ont publié un certain nombre de declarations et de documents définissant la position de l'Islam visà-vis de la Conférence et du projet de Plateforme d'Action. Cette évolution de la tendance politique islamique mérite qu'on s'y arrête et qu'on l'analyse. Elle représente une strategie nouvelle pour trouver des solutions aux problémes des femmes dans l'arène internationale et indique que la leçon donnée par la défaite des théories politiques islamiques lors de la Conférence internationale sur la population et le développement a été bien comprise. Il ressort toutefois des documents les plus marquants présentés à la Conference que la stratégie nouvelle ne traduit aucun changement réel dans la substance meme des ideas sur les problèmes concernant les femmes, comme en témoigne cet article. Durante el periodo preparatorio de la Conferencia Internacional de la Mujer, organizada por la ONU en Pequin en 1995, se registró un participación sin precedentes de instituciones islámicas regionales e internacionales. Esos grupos publicaron una serie de declaraciones y documentos en los que resumían la posición musulmana ante la Conferencia y el borrador de la Plataforma para la Acción. Ese cambio de actitud en la tendencia politica islamica es digno de atención y análisis, pues constituye una nueva estrategia en el tratamiento a nivel internacional de los temas de la mujer, y refleja, además, una clara comprensión del notable fracaso de las ideas de la tendencia poĺitica islamica durante la Conferencia Internacional sobre Población y Desarrollo. No obstante, sus documentos más resaltantes, tal como to demuestra este ensayo, sugieren que la nueva estrategia no conlleva un cambio real en los principios que ripen sus puntos de vista en to referente a los temas de la mujer.
