Nonlinear Fiber Optics (5th Edition)
2013,2012
Since the 4th Edition appeared, a fast evolution of the field has occurred. The Fifth Edition of this classic work provides an up-to-date account of the nonlinear phenomena occurring inside optical fibers, the basis of all our telecommunications infrastructure, as well as being used in the medical field. Reflecting the big developments in research, this new edition includes major new content: slow light effects, which offers a reduction in noise and power consumption, and more ordered network traffic; stimulated Brillouin scattering; vectorial treatment of highly nonlinear fibers; and a brand new chapter on supercontinuum generation in optical fibers.

Description du sujet. Conclusions. The angady (Madagascar), an agricultural tool and a cultural dimension. Reflections on the adoption of innovations such as Conservation Agriculture in small Malagasy peasantry Description of the subject. The angady (Malagasy spade) and its agricultural use (plowing) are still very much in evidence in Madagascar's small farming community. Objectives. This article aims (i) to clarify the importance of the angady in the agricultural equipment of the small peasantry, (ii) to evaluate the cultural dimensions attached to it, and (iii) to present some reflections on the attitude of the Malagasy peasant towards no-till practices. Method. Objectives (i) and (ii) are simply bibliographical studies. Objective (iii) is the analysis of the results of a sustainable development project based on conservation agriculture, and on a post-project evaluation. Results. It is shown that the angady is still very present and dominant in the equipment of the Malagasy farmer, but beyond being a simple agricultural tool, the angady is also a cultural object associated with plowing and is symbolically part of the identity of the Malagasy farmer. A vast agricultural development project based on \"conservation agriculture\" – one of whose principles is the total or partial abandonment of plowing – has been running in Madagascar for over 10 years, but with a relatively low level of appropriation by the small Malagasy peasantry and a very limited dissemination. Conclusions. The published results and the post-project evaluation lead the authors of this article to put forward the hypothesis (yet to be tested) that, beyond the main conclusions of the evaluators, the cultural dimension of the angady could be taken into consideration, at least partially, to explain this low level of adoption of the alternative practices proposed by the research.
