When writing this book, Vahur Laiapea went to meet people who are deeply affected by Russia’s aggression in Ukraine, whose loved ones it kills and maims, whose souls are left with scars that will never completely heal. Vahur Laiapea is an Estonian documentary film maker and writer whose work has at times led him into extreme situations. On April 18, 2017, he was kidnapped in Afghanistan by members of the Taliban. Late that evening, he was standing on the edge of a ready dug grave expecting machine gun fire to riddle his back. It didn’t. Laiapea has visited Ukraine on numerous occasions during the ongoing war. He is currently working on a documentary film and a book about Serhii Kazimir, a Ukrainian officer who returned home in January 2024 as the result of a prisoner exchange after having been a prisoner of war in Russia for almost two years.

This book discusses the state of cryobiology, which is currently developing into an important and innovative field of medicine. It is already routine to preserve and revive cells and small tissue samples through cooling. The current development of organ cryopreservation with the aim of preserving human transplant organs and making them available to remedy the shortage of transplants will be discussed. Preservation of the entire human body is also a long-term goal which may come a little more into reach by such development. The processes involved in the cooling of tissues, using vitrification and cryoprotection, are discussed in detail. The many experiments on cells, tissues and organs at non-cryogenic and cryogenic temperatures below 0°C are compiled and evaluated. Obstacles to the methods and the development of means to overcome them are another topic. The astonishing survival of cells following oxygen deprivation is presented with regard to the still inadequate methods of post-mortem tissue cryopreservation. The possibilities of repairing and reactivating tissues form another chapter. The book ends with an outlook on the development of amazing new methods and procedures for cryoprotection, the prevention of ice crystals and stress fractures, and the restoration of tissues. This book examines the profound transformation that has occurred in Ukrainian society as a result of Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022. The authors—two renowned sociologists and directors of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology—document and explain the post-Soviet evolution of Ukrainians’ views, values, and behavior. Utilizing data from hundreds of opinion surveys from 1991 to 2023, they analyze how the war affected the formation of Ukrainian national identity, geopolitical orientations, society’s readiness to resist, attitudes towards the state and its institutions, as well as other aspects. In recent years, the Internet has seen an exponential increase in the number of documents placed online that are not in textual format. These documents appear in a variety of contexts, such as user-generated content sharing websites, social networking websites etc. and formats, including photographs, videos, recorded music, data visualizations etc. The prevalence of these contexts and data formats presents a particularly challenging task to information indexing and retrieval research due to many difficulties, such as assigning suitable semantic metadata, processing and extracting non-textual content automatically, and designing retrieval systems that \"speak in the native language\" of non-text documents.

The seventeenth-century Ottoman Empire was rife with polemical debate, around worshipping at saints' graves, medical procedures, smoking tobacco, and other everyday practices. Fueling these debates was a new form of writing—the pamphlet, a cheap, short, and mobile text that provided readers with simplified legal arguments. These pamphlets were more than simply a novel way to disseminate texts, they made a consequential shift in the way Ottoman subjects communicated. This book offers the first comprehensive look at a new communication order that flourished in seventeenth-century manuscript culture. Through the example of the pamphlet, Nir Shafir investigates the political and cultural institutions used to navigate, regulate, and encourage the circulation of information in a society in which all books were copied by hand. He sketches an ecology of books, examining how books were produced, the movement of texts regulated, education administered, reading conducted, and publics cultivated. Pamphlets invited both the well and poorly educated to participate in public debates, thus expanding the Ottoman body politic. They also spurred an epidemic of fake authors and popular forms of reading. Thus, pamphlets became both the forum and the fuel for the polarization of Ottoman society. Based on years of research in Islamic manuscript libraries worldwide, this book illuminates a vibrant and evolving premodern manuscript culture.

This book is directed at both researchers and teachers with an interest to establish a multilingual and cosmopolitan culture within classrooms; it contributes to research in Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) on multiple levels. The theoretical part sketches a conceptual framework with a competence model for the promotion of global discourse competence as the center of gravity for multilingual CLIL in the social sciences. Along the leitmotif of climate change, the construction of ‘cosmopolitan classroom glocalities’ for supporting learners’ 21st century skills is suggested. Besides defending design-based action research as a research method for bridging the gap between theory and practice, two empirical contributions from a German 10th grade CLIL classroom with English as target language make the preceding theoretical framework tangible. One chapter deals with more language-related issues, whereas the subsequent chapter takes a subject turn. At first, a comprehensive model for multilingual CLIL is presented. It builds on the novel concept of translanguaging, adapted to ‘trans-foreign-languaging’ for facilitating multilingualism as a daily norm. Thereafter, the model’s effect on political judgments is investigated. This chapter concludes in proposing the genesis of a ‘perfect equilibrium of emotional and rational learning’ for promoting empathy, solidarity, and justice within a democratic and transnational civil society.
