Achilles Tendon Ruptures in National Hockey League Players: Return to Sport and Performance Impact
Background: Few studies assess rates of return to play and postinjury performance in National Hockey League (NHL) players who sustain Achilles tendon ruptures. Our objective was to determine the rate of return to play and performance impact among NHL players who undergo surgical repair of Achilles tendon tears. Methods: NHL players who sustained an Achilles tendon rupture between 2001 and 2021 were identified using a publicly available injury database. Demographic and outcome data were collected for the 1-year period preceding and the 2-year period following surgery. Our primary outcome was expected wins above replacement per 60 minutes played. A position, draft year, and index season performance matched cohort was created. Pre- and postinjury outcomes were compared between cases and controls with a paired t test. Results: We identified 15 cases (9 forwards, 5 defencemen, 1 goaltender). Fourteen of 15 (93%) players returned to play. Preinjury, postinjury year 1, and postinjury year 2 expected wins above replacement were 0.05, 0.05, 0.05 respectively (P > .05). There was no significant difference in performance between cases and controls at any time point. Conclusion: Achilles tendon tears are associated with a high rate of return to play in the NHL and are not associated with a significant change in offensive, defensive, or overall performance-based metrics. Level of Evidence: Level III, case-control study.
Return to Play, Performance, and Earnings Analysis After Lumbar Disc Herniation in National Hockey League Players
Study Design Retrospective cohort study. Objective Professional hockey players have a high incidence of lumbar disc herniations (LDH). The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of LDH on the performance and financial earnings of National Hockey League (NHL) players. Methods NHL players who sustained a LDH were retrospectively reviewed utilizing an online database and a 2:1 matched control cohort. Player performance and game usage was compared at one- and three-season(s) pre- and post-injury season within the cohorts. Injured and matched players were divided into 3 groups based on the player’s adjusted index season salary. Results A total of 181 players were included, with 62 LDH players matched to 119 healthy controls. Return to play after LDH was 79%. The LDH cohort had fewer seasons played throughout their career compared to the matched group (12.5 ± 4.3 vs 14.2 ± 3.8; P = .031). At 1 season post-index, the LDH cohort had significantly fewer goals per 60 and points per 60 when compared to pre-index. At 3 seasons post-index, the LDH cohort exhibited a significant decline in time-on-ice per game played, goals per 60, and points per 60 compared to pre-index. Conclusion The majority of NHL players who sustained a LDH returned to play (79%) but had shorter careers overall and decreased performance outcomes when compared to matched cohorts at both 1 and 3 seasons post-injury.
Scotty : a hockey life like no other
\"From bestselling author and Hall of Fame player Ken Dryden comes the unparalleled life story of the greatest coach in hockey history, Scotty Bowman. Scotty Bowman is universally heralded as the greatest coach in hockey history, and is widely regarded as one of the best coaches in all of sports. He holds the record for most wins and most Stanley Cups as a head coach and is the only NHL coach to lead three different teams to a championship. He has seen all of hockey's great players--from \"The Rocket\" to Gordie Howe to the young stars that play today--and has witnessed firsthand what makes a team click. However, for all of his accomplishments and his legendary stature in the game of hockey, we know very little about who Scotty Bowman is. Now, Hall of Fame player and the former goaltender of Scotty's Montreal Canadiens team, Ken Dryden, takes us inside the mind of hockey's ultimate coach. We see Scotty as a child in his hometown of Verdun, Quebec, as a teenager racing to a spot in the old Montreal Forum to witness Richard's scoring prowess, and as an up and coming hockey mind, tapped on the shoulder to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Montreal coach Toe Blake. Interwoven through the narrative of Scotty's life story are the profiles of the eight best teams in NHL history in Bowman's eyes, as the coach describes what makes these particular teams stand out from the rest. And, because it's in a coach's competitive nature, these eight teams are pitted against one another in a winner-take-all tournament, where Scotty will determine once and for all which team is the greatest team in NHL history, and why.\" -- Provided by publisher
The Impact of Hip Arthroscopy on Long-term Performance Trajectories in NHL Players: A Matched Cohort Study Using Advanced Analytics
Background: Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome is a common cause of hip pain in elite athletes and frequently necessitates hip arthroscopy in National Hockey League (NHL) players. While high return-to-sport (RTS) rates are reported, the long-term impact of surgery on player performance using advanced analytics has not been well studied. Hypothesis: Players undergoing surgery would exhibit steeper performance declines in defensive performance metrics relative to matched controls, despite similar RTS rates. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: This matched cohort study identified NHL skaters who underwent hip arthroscopy for FAIS between 2000 and 2024 using publicly available databases. Surgical confirmation was established through ≥2 independent sports news outlets. Players active for ≥2 seasons between 2007 and 2025 were matched 1:1 to controls based on position and performance at age 24. Outcomes included Wins Above Replacement per 60 minutes (WAR/60) and offensive and defensive Goals Above Replacement per 60 minutes (Off GAR/60, Def GAR/60), obtained from Evolving-Hockey. Fixed-effects panel regression with joint F tests was used to model longitudinal aging curves and isolate surgical effects from natural performance decline. Results: A total of 63 NHL skaters (42 forwards, 21 defensemen) were included and matched to controls. Among forwards, hip arthroscopy was associated with a statistically significant decline in Def GAR/60 across the aging curve (interaction P = .04), while Off GAR/60 (P = .64) and WAR/60 (P = .40) showed no significant differences. No statistically significant performance differences were observed among defensemen. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that hip arthroscopy was associated with a steeper age-related decline in defensive performance among NHL forwards, while offensive metrics and overall player value remained unaffected. No significant performance differences were noted in defensemen. Integrating surgical history into performance models may improve player evaluation and recovery strategies.
The Hall : celebrating hockey's heritage, heroes and home
\"Most people think of the Hockey Hall of Fame as a famous destination, and it's no wonder. Its iconic building, priceless trophies and artifacts, and hallowed membership have helped to make it both a national treasure and an international beacon, an irresistible draw for any hockey fan. It's even greater than that\"-- publisher's web site.
A Markov Game model for valuing actions, locations, and team performance in ice hockey
We apply the Markov Game formalism to develop a context-aware approach to valuing player actions, locations, and team performance in ice hockey. The Markov Game formalism uses machine learning and AI techniques to incorporate context and look-ahead. Dynamic programming is applied to learn value functions that quantify the impact of actions on goal scoring. Learning is based on a massive new dataset, from SportLogiq, that contains over 1.3M events in the National Hockey League. The SportLogiq data include the location of an action, which has previously been unavailable in hockey analytics. We give examples showing how the model assigns context and location aware values to a large set of 13 action types. Team performance can be assessed as the aggregate value of actions performed by the team’s players, or the aggregate value of states reached by the team. Model validation shows that the total team action and state value both provide a strong indicator predictor of team success, as measured by the team’s average goal ratio.
