Agrotisvillenensis -a new species of Noctuinae (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) from the southeastern Iberian Peninsula
is described from the Iberian Peninsula. Differential superficial, genital and genetic (barcode) characters from its closest Iberian and European relative species, (Hufnagel, 1766), are presented. Morphologically, the new species is best characterized in the male genitalia by the shape of the basal vesica and the presence of a median diverticulum and in the female genitalia by its comparatively long appendix bursae. The barcode of differs from those of related species and is assigned a unique BIN.
A new species of Lophostreptus Cook, 1895 discovered among syntypes of L.regularis Attems, 1909 (Diplopoda, Spirostreptida, Spirostreptidae)
A new species of the genus Cook, 1895 is described, based on specimens hidden for over a century among the syntypes of its congener Attems, 1909 housed in the Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet Stockholm (NRMS) and the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien (NHMW). A lectotype is designated for Attems, 1909 in order to stabilize its taxonomy. Updates to the millipede fauna of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania are provided.
Two new species of the genus Kingdonella Uvarov, 1933 (Orthoptera, Acridoidea) and the first reported male of Kingdonellaqinghaiensis Zheng, 1990
Two new species of the genus and the first report of a male Zheng, 1990 are presented. The new species has similar morphological features to Uvarov, 1933, but it differs from the latter in having 1) the hind tibia black; 2) the epiproct, in males, with a median groove in the basal 1/2 and in the apical 1/4; 3) the denticles of the male epiproct black; 4) the outside of the hind femur reddish-brown on the basal 1/4 and black on the apical 3/4; and 5) the ventral face of the hind femur black on the outer side. The second new species, , is morphologically close to Zheng, 1980 but differs from the latter in having 1) the length of the middle segment (12th segment) of antennae 1.2 times longer than its width; 2) the subgenital plate sharp-cornered in males; 3) the ovipositor smooth; 4) the upper half of hind femur outside surface with two black spots; and 5) the ventral face of the hind femur black on its outer side, red on the basal 2/3, and black on the apical 1/3 of its inner side. Finally, we provide a key to all known species of .
Bambusarushunii (Poaceae, Bambusoideae, Bambuseae), a new bamboo species from Guangdong, China
A new bamboo species, , from Yangjiang City, Guangdong Province, China, is described and illustrated in this paper. The new species resembles and in having branchlets specialised into weak thorns at the lower nodes of culms, but can be easily distinguished from the latter two by having one or two extremely shortened internodes at the culm base, glabrous internode, culm leaf sheath being dark brown strigose on the central part and with a nearly truncate or slightly obliquely truncate apex, relatively high culm leaf ligule, culm leaf blade base not narrowed, extending outwards and contiguous with auricles and the glabrous foliage leaf with a ciliate ligule margin.
Synotislhozhagensis (Asteraceae, Senecioneae), a new species from south-eastern Xizang, China, based on morphological and molecular evidence
, a new species belonging to Senecioneae (Asteraceae), is described and illustrated herein after being discovered during biodiversity surveys in Lhozhag County, Xizang Autonomous Region, China. This species is similar to (Wall. ex DC.) C.Jeffrey & Y.L.Chen, but differs mainly in having the ray floret absent (vs. 1), the leaf margins irregularly coarsely serrate (vs. finely mucronulate-serrate) and the phyllaries five (vs. three or four). It is also allied to C.Jeffrey & Y.L.Chen in growth habit, leaf blade morphology and inflorescence structure, but is distinguished by the corymbs loose and spreading (vs. dense and glomeruliform), the ligulate floret absent (vs. one or two) and the disc florets five (vs. three or four). Phylogenetic analysis, based on ITS sequences, confirms its distinct taxonomic status within . A line drawing and colour plates, a geographic distribution map, a detailed comparison table including the aforementioned three species and the provisional IUCN status are provided.
Eumachiabrevipedunculata (Rubiaceae, Palicoureeae), a new species from Yunnan, China
is a newly-identified species of the tribe Palicoureeae of Rubiaceae from Yunnan, China. It is morphologically similar to , but differs by its smaller stipules, shorter petioles, smaller leaf blades, reduced inflorescences with shorter peduncles, axes and pedicels, longer calyx lobes, yellow-green flowers with shorter corolla tubes and shorter anthers. This species is widely found in southern Yunnan, but has long been misidentified as . We clarify its taxonomic status and provide a description and illustration here.
Emergence of the Southeast Asian islands as a driver for Neogene cooling
Steep topography, a tropical climate, and mafic lithologies contribute to efficient chemical weathering and carbon sequestration in the Southeast Asian islands. Ongoing arc–continent collision between the Sunda-Banda arc system and Australia has increased the area of subaerially exposed land in the region since the mid-Miocene. Concurrently, Earth’s climate has cooled since the Miocene Climatic Optimum, leading to growth of the Antarctic ice sheet and the onset of Northern Hemisphere glaciation. We seek to evaluate the hypothesis that the emergence of the Southeast Asian islands played a significant role in driving this cooling trend through increasing global weatherability. To do so, we have compiled paleoshoreline data and incorporated them into GEOCLIM, which couples a global climate model to a silicate weathering model with spatially resolved lithology. We find that without the increase in area of the Southeast Asian islands over the Neogene, atmospheric pCO₂ would have been significantly higher than preindustrial values, remaining above the levels necessary for initiating Northern Hemisphere ice sheets.
Four new species of Sphaeroderma Stephens (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Galerucinae, Alticini) from Taiwan, with discussion on genus boundaries based on S.flavonotatum Chûjô and S.jungchani sp. nov
Three new species of Stephens, 1831, , , and are described based on specimens from Shei-Pa National Park, Taiwan. A fourth new species, , is described based on specimens from southern Taiwan. Delimitation of the genus is discussed based on Chûjô, 1937, which is redescribed, and the new species,
Two new species of Sinopoda from China, with first description of the male of S.horizontalis Zhong, Cao & Liu, 2017 (Araneae, Sparassidae)
Three species of spider genus Jäger, 1999 are reported from southern China. Two of them are described as new to science: Zhang, Yu & Zhong, and Zhang, Yu & Zhong, , both from Guizhou Province. The male of Zhong, Cao & Liu, 2017 is described for the first time based on new material from the type locality, Wuyishan National Nature Reserve, Fujian Province, China. Detailed descriptions, diagnoses, photographs and a distribution map of the three species are provided.
