Rwanda, M23 Rebels and Lithium Wars: Is Paul Kagame Africa’s Version of Netanyahu?
The persistent conflicts in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have deep roots in geopolitical manoeuvring for the region’s abundant natural resources. The DRC, rich in lithium and other rare earth minerals, finds itself ensnared in fierce competition among major powers eager to exploit its wealth, thereby reigniting destructive forces reminiscent of imperialism and territorial conquest. Rwanda, an influential neighbour with territorial ambitions like Israel’s in the Middle East, faces accusations of supporting rebel groups in the eastern DRC. Using resource curse theory, post-imperialism, and postcolonialism, this paper contrasts Kagame’s strategies in the DRC with those of Benjamin Netanyahu in the Middle East. Additionally, it interrogates the response of African nations to Kagame’s ambitions and his Western alliances, suggesting it mirrors the ineffectiveness of the Arab League in the Middle East. Ultimately, this study calls for a radical re-evaluation of Africa’s relations with Kagame to mitigate the potential for catastrophic resource-driven conflicts in East Africa.
