The Dutch moment : war, trade, and settlement in the seventeenth-century Atlantic world
\"In The Dutch Moment, Wim Klooster shows how the Dutch built and eventually lost an Atlantic empire that stretched from the homeland in the United Provinces to the Hudson River and from Brazil and the Caribbean to the African Gold Coast. The fleets and armies that fought for the Dutch in the decades-long war against Spain included numerous foreigners, largely drawn from countries in northwestern Europe. Likewise, many settlers of Dutch colonies were born in other parts of Europe or the New World. The Dutch would not have been able to achieve military victories without the native alliances they carefully cultivated. Indeed, the Dutch Atlantic was quintessentially interimperial, multinational, and multiracial. At the same time, it was an empire entirely designed to benefit the United Provinces. The pivotal colony in the Dutch Atlantic was Brazil, half of which was conquered by the Dutch West India Company. Its brief lifespan notwithstanding, Dutch Brazil (1630-1654) had a lasting impact on the Atlantic world. The scope of Dutch warfare in Brazil is hard to overestimate--this was the largest interimperial conflict of the seventeenth-century Atlantic. Brazil launched the Dutch into the transatlantic slave trade, a business they soon dominated. At the same time, Dutch Brazil paved the way for a Jewish life in freedom in the Americas after the first American synagogues opened their doors in Recife. In the end, the entire colony eventually reverted to Portuguese rule, in part because Dutch soldiers, plagued by perennial poverty, famine, and misery, refused to take up arms. As they did elsewhere, the Dutch lost a crucial colony because of the empire's systematic neglect of the very soldiers on whom its defenses rested. After the loss of Brazil and, ten years later, New Netherland, the Dutch scaled back their political ambitions in the Atlantic world. Their American colonies barely survived wars with England and France. As the imperial dimension waned, the interimperial dimension gained strength. Dutch Ships in Tropical Waters

The end of the 16th century saw Dutch expansion in Asia, as The Dutch East India Company (the VOC) was fast becoming an Asian power, both political and economic. By 1669, the VOC was the richest private company the world had ever seen. This landmark study looks at perhaps the most important tool in the Company' trading - its ships. In order to reconstruct the complete shipping activities of the VOC, the author created a unique database of the ships' movements, including frigates and other, hitherto ingored, smaller vessels. Parthesius's research into the routes and the types of ships in the service of the VOC proves that it was precisely the wide range of types and sizes of vessels that gave the Company the ability to sail - and continue its profitable trade - the year round. Furthermore, it appears that the VOC commanded at least twice the number of ships than earlier historians have ascertained. Combining the best of maritime and social history, this book will change our understanding of the commercial dynamics of the most successful economic organization of the period.
Robert Parthesius brengt de scheepvaart en handel van de VOC volledig in kaart. Hij toont aan dat de intra-Aziatische handel sleutel was tot het succes van de maatschappij in de zeventiende eeuw. Met dit boek rekent Robert Parthesius af met het bestaande beeld van de Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC). Parthesius reconstrueert tot in detail de grootte en de activiteiten van de maatschappij. Hij toont aan dat het aantal schepen onder bevel van de VOC minstens twee keer zo groot was als tot nu toe gedacht. Voorheen is vooral onderzoek gedaan naar het scheepvaartverkeer tussen Azië en Europa, de zogenaamde 'Retourvaart'. Parthesius keek verder dan deze retourvaart en analyseerde de ontwikkeling van het Nederlandse scheepvaartnetwerk in Azië van 1595 tot 1660. Voor deze studie verzamelde hij alle gegevens over VOC-schepen in een database. Zo bracht hij de scheepsroutes van de fregatten maar ook die van de kleinere schepen uitgebreid in kaart. Door de intra-Aziatische handel in de zeventiende eeuw en door de diversiteit aan schepen kon de VOC het hele jaar door varen en streefde zo concurrerende maatschappijen als die van de Portugezen voorbij. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, objects, texts and people travelled around the world on board Dutch ships. The essays in this book explore how these circulations transformed knowledge in Asian and European societies. They concentrate on epistemic consequences in the fields of historiography, geography, natural history, religion and philosophy, as well as in everyday life. Emphasizing transformations, the volume reconstructs small semantic shifts of knowledge and tentative adjustments to new cultural contexts. It unfolds the often conflict-ridden, complex and largely global history of specific pieces of knowledge as well as of generally-shared contemporary understandings regarding what could or could not be considered true. The book contributes to current debates about how to conceptualize the unsettled epistemologies of the early modern world.
