Within-plate setting of Paleozoic alkalic suites in southeastern New England, USA; constraints from chemical abrasion-TIMS U-Pb geochronology and paleomagnetism
Mid-Paleozoic alkalic plutons and associated volcanic rocks in a northeast-trending belt transecting the southeastern New England segment of “West” Avalonia are well known for their anorogenic, “within-plate” geochemical signatures, yet poor age control has obscured the tectonic setting of this magmatism. Although studied in the past by pioneers of mineralogy and petrology, this group of rocks currently stands out as the only northern Appalachian unit on the lithotectonic map of the Appalachian orogen as having “uncertain tectonic affinity.” New high-precision zircon geochronology derived from weighted-mean 206Pb/238U dates by the chemical abrasion–TIMS method establish the following crystallization ages for members of mid-Paleozoic alkalic suite: 426.00 ± 0.50–423.93 ± 0.51 Ma for the Cape Ann Pluton, 411.96 ± 0.52 Ma for the Wampatuck rhyolite associated with the 411.58 ± 0.50 Ma Quincy Granite, 377.97 ± 0.44 Ma for the Peabody Granite, and 377.74 ± 0.44 Ma for the Wenham Monzonite (2σ total errors). A date of 422.99 ± 0.51 Ma was also obtained from the Newbury Volcanic Complex located in the Ganderian Putnam-Nashoba terrane that formed the mid-Paleozoic Laurentian margin in southeastern New England. The new geochronology is integrated with a compilation of published U-Pb dates and paleomagnetically determined paleolatitudes to examine the history of within-plate magmatism during West Avalonia’s northward drift from Gondwana to collision with Laurentia and to assess possible intraplate mechanisms for recurrent bimodal alkalic activity in the same zone for more than 70 My.
Characterisation of the bovine enteric calici-like virus, Newbury agent 1
The bovine enteric calici-like virus, Newbury agent 1 (NA1) was characterised to determine if it is a member of the Caliciviridae and to establish its antigenic relationship to the established bovine enteric calicivirus Newbury agent 2 (NA2). Solid phase immune electron microscopy (SPIEM) allowed quantification of NA1 virions and identification of faecal samples with optimal virus levels. NA1 particles were 36.6 nm in diameter, had an indefinite surface structure resembling that of human small round structured viruses (SRSVs), and a buoyant density of 1.34 g ml −1. A single capsid protein of 49.4 kDa was detected by Western blotting in purified NA1 preparations prepared from post-infection but not pre-infection faecal samples and with post- but not pre-infection sera. NA1 was antigenically unrelated to the bovine enteric calicivirus NA2 by SPIEM. These properties were consistent with classification of NA1 within the Caliciviridae but demonstrated heterogeneity in the capsid composition of bovine enteric caliciviruses.
The Mistakes That Make People
This article constitutes a critique of James C. Scott’s theory of everyday resistance and the use of these concepts in anthropology more generally. Its claim is that theories of power and resistance need to be analyzed in terms of local ideas about the nature of people in order to account for what happens in social life. This contention is based on ideas of personhood among motorcycle taxi drivers in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. Central to these ideas are the ‘faults’ or ‘mistakes’ that people ‘have’, which form the basis of social relations founded on ‘patience’ or ‘forbearance’. Because of these relations, people typically do not take the form of bounded individuals who can act as resistant subjects in Scott’s terms. Thus, we require a reconceptualization of notions of power and resistance based on Rwandan understandings of the person.
Reproductive isolation and genetic differentiation in North American species of Triops (Crustacea: Branchiopoda: Notostraca)
Electrophoretic analysis of 31 populations, ranging from California to Kansas, indicates that the North American tadpole shrimp Triops longicaudatus (LeConte) is actually a mixture of at least two reproductively isolated species. In the central United States, the predominant species is T. longicaudatus, which is found typically in ephemeral prairie pools. In the southwestern United States, the predominant species is Triops newberryi (Packard), which characteristically inhabits large playa pools. The two species coexist occasionally and in sympatric situations they are reproductively isolated from each other. The two species are genetically distinct at a level greater than is typical of conspecific populations. These genetic differences are correlated with subtle morphological differences and profound differences in reproductive biology. Both species represent complexes of bisexual and unisexual populations. Bisexual populations of T. longicaudatus are usually composed of males and females in approximately equal frequencies; bisexual populations of T. newberryi are composed of males in low frequencies and self-compatible hermaphrodites. Unisexual populations of both species apparently consist entirely of self-compatible hermaphrodites.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
VIC: Vic Libs: want women but preselecting men
The signs aren't good. Former speaker Christine Fyffe is supporting her son to take over in Evelyn, while Sandringham MP Murray Thompson's seat looks set to go to another former Liberal staffer in Brad Rowswell. \"There are a number of preselections to come, so I'd just say it's not where you start, it's where you finish,\" Mr [Matthew Guy] said.
FED:Aust captive tells of jungle escape
\"We are relieved that he's home,\" Ms Newbury said. \"We're all a bit shellshocked, of course, but he's safely with us so that's good.\" Ms Newbury told AAP her son had decided to cut short his youth ambassador posting following the incident and was still \"up and down\" after the ordeal.

NSW:Half of criminals yet to pay half the spot fines after trial
The CIN scheme has been trialled in 12 police districts since September 2002. Legislation to enable the new powers was passed by the NSW parliament late last year and the NSW Ombudsman has signed off on the move. In a NSW Budget Estimates committee today, chief commissioner of NSW Treasury Tony Newbury said 9,665 of the fines had been issued. The NSW opposition has labelled the move a disgrace, saying it would send the wrong message to criminals, leading to a de-stigmatising of dishonesty crimes by treating them \"much like a traffic ticket\".
