Religion and its Role in Addressing Three Critical Social Issues in Africa: Gender-Based Violence, Crime, and Poverty
This December edition of the Journal for the Study of Religion problematizes the role and influence of religion on societies in Africa as they navigate three of the most challenging social issues in Africa, namely gender-based violence (GBV), crime, and poverty. The articles in this edition look at Muslim communities, Christian communities, southern African language communities, and prison communities exploring what role religions play in helping ordinary people to deal with the challenges of GBV, crime, and poverty. The findings of these articles suggest that religious interventions have little effect on practically reducing crime or the lowering of GBV. The articles by both Banda and Isiko and Kisekka indicate the different ways in which scholars think about the role that many people in Africa believe religion can or does have on addressing poverty.

Richard F Walker Scientific Research and Discovery, ProSoma Therapeutics LLC, Clearwater, FL, 33765, USACorrespondence: Richard F WalkerScientific Research and Discovery, ProSoma Therapeutics LLC, 1932 Dew Street, Unit 11, Clearwater, FL, 33765, USATel +1 727 648 2791Email drrwalker@gmail.com Throughout 2020, the COVID-19 virus has dominated, demanded, and consumedconstant attention, disrupted lives, caused governmental chaos, distractedfrom creative thought, and even killed many citizens of the Earth. The comingof 2021 brings with it hopes that the rapid and recent development of a vaccinewill finally conquer the scourge of this pandemic. Thus, I foresee the New Yearas a time of renewed health, and a return to productive intellectual and philosophicalfocus, reorganization, growth, and transition. In light of that optimism,I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a healthy, prosperous andHappy New Year, and also to announce that after almost 15 years of devotedservice to Clinical Interventions in Aging (CIA), I will be now be focusing myfull-time efforts upon completion of a scientific project that has consumed methroughout the extent of my scientific career. Accordingly, I am transferring myeditorial responsibilities for CIA to the very worthy and capable hands ofProfessor Nandu Goswami, PhD. While adding his new responsibilities atCIA, Dr. Goswami will continue to maintain his position as Acting Chair ofPhysiology and Head of the research group \"Gravitational Physiology, Agingand Medicine\", at the Medical University of Graz, Austria. More can be readof Dr. Goswami's accomplishments on the Editorial Board members' pageat https://www.dovepress.com/journal-editor-clinical-interventions-in-aging-eic4.Within it is mentioned that Dr. Goswami \"has been with CIA right from itshumble beginnings\", which indeed he has. The idea of creating a scientificjournal that was more \"applied\" clinically to expand our abilities to manageproblems of human aging rather than to explore basic research for futuretherapies was born during a serendipitous meeting that I had with Mr. TimHill at Tampa International Airport, USA, in 2005. At the time, Tim wasPublisher of Dove Medical Press. We were previously unknown to each other,so while having to wait for our connections, we initiated a conversation in thelounge, and over a pint of beer discovered that we might collaborate ona common project. At the time, I was a university professor with researchinterests, federal grants, and many publications in aging, but still seekingother challenging interests, whereas he wished to expand the peer-reviewedofferings of Dove Medical Press. We collaborated and were successful in thateffort, as CIA was first published in 2006. It rapidly gained recognition and nowhas a respectable Impact Factor of 3.023. CIA, as an asset of Dove Press, wassubsequently purchased by the British firm Informa PLC in 2017, where thejournal's international standing in aging care will continue to grow under thecapable leadership of Dr. Goswami. So, in closing, I wish to thank all thoseadministrators, staff editors, reviewers, and contributors without whose support CIA would just be a possibility rather than the valuable reality it has become
