Utilizing machine learning to predict participant response to follow-up health surveys in the Millennium Cohort Study

The Millennium Cohort Study is a longitudinal study which collects self-reported data from surveys to examine the long-term effects of military service. Participant nonresponse to follow-up surveys presents a potential threat to the validity and generalizability of study findings. In recent years, predictive analytics has emerged as a promising tool to identify predictors of nonresponse. Here, we develop a high-skill classifier using machine learning techniques to predict participant response to follow-up surveys of the Millennium Cohort Study. Six supervised algorithms were employed to predict response to the 2021 follow-up survey. Using latent class analysis (LCA), we classified participants based on historical survey response and compared prediction performance with and without this variable. Feature analysis was subsequently conducted on the best-performing model. Including the LCA variable in the machine learning analysis, all six algorithms performed comparably. Without the LCA variable, random forest outperformed the benchmark regression model, however overall prediction performance decreased. Feature analysis showed the LCA variable as the most important predictor. Our findings highlight the importance of historical response to improve prediction performance of participant response to follow-up surveys. Machine learning algorithms can be especially valuable when historical data are not available. Implementing these methods in longitudinal studies can enhance outreach efforts by strategically targeting participants, ultimately boosting survey response rates and mitigating nonresponse.

No Parent Left Behind: Predicting Parental Involvement in Adolescents' Education Within a Sociodemographically Diverse Population

Numerous studies have investigated the utility of the Hoover-Dempsey and Sandler (HDS) model for predicting parents' involvement in students' education. Yet, the model has yet to be thoroughly evaluated with respect to youth who are (a) in high school and (b) from sociodemographically diverse families. Using a nationally representative sample of 3,248 parents drawn from the 2007 National Household Educational Survey, the authors examined the relationship of high school outreach efforts, parent satisfaction with the school, and parental beliefs to 3 types of parent involvement. The analysis largely confirmed the power of the HDS model. Furthermore, the findings suggest that school outreach efforts are particularly important in promoting historically disenfranchised parents' involvement in the schools, whereas enhancing parenting self-efficacy is crucial for supporting their engagement at home.

The World Bank Group guarantee instruments 1990-2007 : an independent evaluation
Foreign direct investment and private capital flows are highly concentrated geographically, with almost half of them reaching five top destinations. These flows tend to evade many high-risk countries. Regulatory and contractual risks, particularly in infrastructure, have inhibited investments in many parts of the developing world. A core objective of the World Bank Group (WBG) has been to support the flow of private investment for development; guarantees and insurance have been among the instruments that the WBG has used to pursue this objective. This study examines three main questions: • Should the WBG be in the guarantee business? • Have guarantee instruments in the three WBG institutions been used to their potential as reflected in WBG expectations and perceived demand? • Is the WBG appropriately organized to deliver its range of guarantee products in an effective and efficient manner?
Black Mega-Churches in the Internet Age: Exploring Theological Teachings and Social Outreach Efforts

The research on Black mega-churches has been limited at best. To date, little is known about theological teachings of Black mega-churches. Other primary characteristics of Black mega-churches are even less understood, e.g., how these institutions promote their theological teachings online. Consequently, in this study, Black mega-church websites constitute a data source for examining links between theological teachings and community needs. Specifically, this qualitative study of Internet-mediated research examines the websites of 12 Black mega-churches via content analyses of sermons and information regarding various outreach programs found on their web pages. Results indicate four broad theological themes: honoring the Holy Spirit, heavenly minded, Biblical principles, and social legacy. The findings reveal that these themes were related to the social outreach efforts of the 12 Black mega-churches. Research implications for future studies of Black mega-churches are discussed.

Sustainable development policies as indicators and pre-conditions for sustainability efforts at universities

Purpose: There is a widely held belief that sustainable development (SD) policies are essential for universities to successfully engage in matters related to sustainability, and are an indicator of the extent to which they are active in this field. This paper aims to examine the evidence which currently exists to support this assumption. It surveys a sample of universities in Brazil, Germany, Greece, Portugal, South Africa and the UK and the USA to ascertain the extent to which universities that are active in the field of sustainable development have formal policies on sustainable development, and whether such policies are a pre-condition for successful sustainability efforts. Design/methodology/approach: The study involved 35 universities in seven countries (five universities respectively). A mixed-methods approach has been used, ranging from document analysis, website analysis, questionnaires and interviewing. Findings: Although only 60 per cent of the sampled universities had a policy that specifically addressed SD, this cannot be regarded as an indicator that the remaining 40 per cent are not engaged with substantial actions that address SD. Indeed, all of the universities in the sample, regardless of the existence of a SD formal policy, demonstrated engagement with environmental sustainability policies or procedures in some form or another. This research has been limited by the availability and ability to procure information from the sampled universities. Despite this, it is one of the largest research efforts of this kind ever performed. Research limitations/implications: This research has been limited by the availability and ability to procure information from the sampled universities. Practical implications: The findings provide some valuable insights into the connections between SD policies on the one hand and the practice of sustainable development in higher education institutions on the other. Social implications: Universities with SD policies can contribute to models of economic growth consistent with sustainable development. Originality/value: The study is the one of the largest research efforts of this kind ever performed.

Lessons from seabird conservation in Alaskan longline fisheries

Although bycatch of seabirds and other long-lived species is a critical conservation issue in world fisheries, case studies documenting significant reductions in the mortality of these low-productivity species in a fishery are rare. We studied progress toward seabird conservation in the Alaskan longline fisheries, one of the largest and most diverse demersal fisheries. We generated annual seabird bycatch rates in 4 target fisheries and all fisheries combined from 23 years of fisheries observer data. We used 0-inflated negative binomial models to evaluate variables influencing seabird bycatch per unit effort (BPUE) in 2 target fisheries. Following adoption of streamer lines, at first voluntarily and then mandatorily, seabird BPUE was reduced by 77–90%, preventing mortality of thousands of birds per year. Despite this, BPUE increased significantly in 2 of 4 target fisheries since streamer lines were adopted. Although night setting yielded significant reductions (74–97%) in seabird BPUE and significant increases (7–11%) in fish catch per unit effort over daytime setting, nighttime setting increased the BPUE of Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis) by 40% and nontarget fish species by 5–17%. Thus, best practices to prevent seabird mortalities in longline fisheries varied by species assemblage and fishery. Our results inform global efforts toward fisheries bycatch reduction by illustrating that successful conservation requires fishery-specific solutions, strong industry support, constant vigilance in analysis and reporting observer data, and ongoing outreach to fleets, especially to vessels with anomalously high BPUE.
Aunque la captura accesoria de aves marinas y otras especies con ciclos de vida largos es un asunto de importancia para la conservación en las pesquerías a nivel global, son raros los estudios de caso que documentan las reducciones significativas de la mortalidad de estas especies de baja productividad en las pesquerías. Estudiamos el progreso hacia la conservación de aves marinas en las pesquerías con palangre en Alaska, una de las pesquerías demersales más grandes y con mayor diversidad. Generamos tasas anuales de capturas accesorias de aves marinas para cuatro pesquerías y todas las pesquerías combinadas a partir de 23 años de datos de observación de pesquerías. Usamos modelos binomiales negativos con inflación 0 para evaluar las variables que influyen sobre la captura accesoria de aves marinas por unidad de esfuerzo (BPUE, en tnglés) en dos pesquerías. Después de la adopción de la caña de pescar, al principio voluntariamente y después de manera obligatoria, el BPUE de aves marinas se redujo entre un 77 y 90%, lo que previno la mortalidad de miles de aves por año. A pesar de esto, el BPUE incrementó significativamente en dos de las cuatro pesquerías diana desde que se adoptaron las cañas de pescar. Instructional efficiency of different discussion approaches in an outreach laboratory: Teacher-guided versus student-centered

Given the rapid development of modern biotechnology, attention to socioscientific issues in educational contexts is crucially important to support students in becoming responsible citizens. The authors' research focused on the impact of discussing socioscientific issues during biology lessons under 3 different treatments (teacher guided, student centered, text only), comparing these treatments with regard to cognitive achievement, cognitive load, and instructional efficiency. The biology lessons were part of an educational intervention with Bavarian 10th-grade students (N = 583) in an out-of-school laboratory on plant genetic engineering. The teacher-guided group performed significantly better regarding knowledge increase, while the cognitive load of the student-centered group was significantly higher. Accordingly, teacher-guided discussion led to the highest instructional efficiency, suggesting an enhanced cognitive achievement through the teacher's guidance. However, a student-centered approach allows students to contribute more of their own opinions, making further research in this area desirable. Finally, we discuss potential implications for teaching and teacher education.

The Role of Student-Teacher Ratio in Parents' Perceptions of Schools' Engagement Efforts

Research suggests a positive relationship between schools' efforts to engage parents and parents' involvement in their child's education. The authors investigated school socioeconomic status, school size, grade level, and student-teacher ratio as predictors of schools' efforts to engage parents of students receiving special education services. The dependent variable was the Schools' Efforts to Partner with Parents' Scale, which has been validated for states' use in their federal accountability systems. Mean school-level scores were calculated for 265 schools in a large southeastern state. Results indicated that student-teacher ratio was the strongest predictor of parents' perceived school engagement efforts. Implications are drawn for ways in which all schools, including those with high student-teacher ratios, can improve their collaboration with parents of students receiving special education services.

This paper presents results of an examination the effect of the introduction of inquiry-orientated learning, IOL, activities into the formal education outreach program for senior high school Physics students run by School of Physics at the University of Sydney, 'Kickstart Physics.' This is the flagship outreach program from the Faculty of Science and accommodates approximately a quarter of the total number of students that sit the state Physics exam. The project considered how students arrive at different inquiry-orientated outcomes such as making hypotheses, displaying and interpreting data, validity, reliability, as well as the mental effort reported by the students during the Kickstart workshop. Results from a survey developed for this study show that a significant increase in mental effort was applied by the students in the inquiry-orientated logbook. In addition, the results presented here suggest that the existing, non-modified logbook, based on the current state (NSW) syllabus, has a strong inquiry focus. The methodology was to survey Senior high school students taking part in the Kickstart workshops. Some were given a logbook to accompany the session designed from the NSW Physics syllabus, and some were given a logbook designed around inquiry-orientated learning. The content related to the syllabus for each workshop remained constant. [Author abstract]

Islamic extremism is the dominant security concern of many contemporary governments, spanning the industrialized West to the developing world.Narrative Landminesexplores how rumors fit into and extend narrative systems and ideologies, particularly in the context of terrorism, counter-terrorism, and extremist insurgencies. Its concern is to foster a more sophisticated understanding of how oral and digital cultures work alongside economic, diplomatic, and cultural factors that influence the struggles between states and non-state actors in the proverbial battle of hearts and minds. Beyond face-to-face communication, the authors also address the role of new and social media in the creation and spread of rumors.
As narrative forms, rumors are suitable to a wide range of political expression, from citizens, insurgents, and governments alike, and in places as distinct as Singapore, Iraq, and Indonesia-the case studies presented for analysis. The authors make a compelling argument for understanding rumors in these contexts as \"narrative IEDs,\" low-cost, low-tech weapons that can successfully counter such elaborate and expansive government initiatives as outreach campaigns or strategic communication efforts. While not exactly the same as the advanced technological systems or Improvised Explosive Devices to which they are metaphorically related, narrative IEDs nevertheless operate as weapons that can aid the extremist cause.
