Smart‐Responsive Multifunctional Therapeutic System for Improved Regenerative Microenvironment and Accelerated Bone Regeneration via Mild Photothermal Therapy
2024
The treatment of bone defects remains a substantial clinical challenge due to the lack of spatiotemporal management of the immune microenvironment, revascularization, and osteogenic differentiation. Herein, deferoxamine (DFO)‐loaded black phosphorus nanosheets decorated by polydopamine layer are prepared (BPPD) and compounded into gelatin methacrylate/sodium alginate methacrylate (GA) hybrid hydrogel as a smart‐responsive therapeutic system (GA/BPPD) for accelerated bone regeneration. The BPPD nanocomposites served as bioactive components and near‐infrared (NIR) photothermal agents, which conferred the hydrogel with excellent NIR/pH dual‐responsive properties, realizing the stimuli‐responsive release of DFO and PO43 − during bone regeneration. Under the action of NIR‐triggered mild photothermal therapy, the GA/BPPD hydrogel exhibited a positive effect on promoting osteogenesis and angiogenesis, eliminating excessive reactive oxygen species, and inducing macrophage polarization to the M2 phenotype. More significantly, through macrophage M2 polarization‐induced osteoimmune microenvironment, this hydrogel platform could also drive functional cytokine secretion for enhanced angiogenesis and osteogenesis. In vivo experiments further demonstrated that the GA/BPPD system could facilitate bone healing by attenuating the local inflammatory response, increasing the secretion of pro‐healing factors, stimulating endogenous cell recruitment, and accelerating revascularization. Collectively, the proposed intelligent photothermal hydrogel platform provides a promising strategy to reshape the damaged tissue microenvironment for augmented bone regeneration. A smart‐responsive multifunctional therapeutic system composed of DFO‐loaded BP nanosheets decorated by PDA layer and GA composite hydrogel is designed and constructed to achieve the stimuli‐responsive release of DFO and PO43− under the action of NIR‐triggered mild photothermal treatment for spatiotemporal management of the immune regulation, revascularization, and osteogenic differentiation during bone healing.

Smart Flexible Electronics‐Integrated Wound Dressing for Real‐Time Monitoring and On‐Demand Treatment of Infected Wounds
2020
As the most frequent wound complication, infection has become a major clinical challenge in wound management. To overcome the “Black Box” status of the wound‐healing process, next‐generation wound dressings with the abilities of real‐time monitoring, diagnosis during early stages, and on‐demand therapy has attracted considerable attention. Here, by combining the emerging development of bioelectronics, a smart flexible electronics‐integrated wound dressing with a double‐layer structure, the upper layer of which is polydimethylsiloxane‐encapsulated flexible electronics integrated with a temperature sensor and ultraviolet (UV) light‐emitting diodes, and the lower layer of which is a UV‐responsive antibacterial hydrogel, is designed. This dressing is expected to provide early infection diagnosis via real‐time wound‐temperature monitoring by the integrated sensor and on‐demand infection treatment by the release of antibiotics from the hydrogel by in situ UV irradiation. The integrated system possesses good flexibility, excellent compatibility, and high monitoring sensitivity and durability. Animal experiment results demonstrate that the integrated system is capable of monitoring wound status in real time, detecting bacterial infection and providing effective treatment on the basis of need. This proof‐of‐concept research holds great promise in developing new strategies to significantly improve wound management and other pathological diagnoses and treatments. A smart flexible electronics‐integrated wound dressing is designed for real‐time monitoring and on‐demand therapy of infected wounds. It is demonstrated that the integrated wound dressing can diagnose infection during early stages by real‐time wound‐temperature monitoring and provide antibacterial treatment based on the collected data via Bluetooth to achieve a closed‐loop wound healing system.

Beyond the Dutch Quota: Media Policy and Cultural Diversity in Local Video-on-Demand Production (2013–2023)
2025
Starting January 1, 2024, a new Dutch investment obligation requires that streaming services with annual revenues exceeding 10 million euros allocate 5% of their turnover to Dutch content production. This policy aligns with similar obligations in countries like France, Germany, and Italy, which introduced tax-based investment obligations for streaming platforms before the 2018 revision of the EU’s Audiovisual Media Service Directive (AVMSD). The AVMSD established a 30% European content quota for subscription video-on-demand (SVoD) platforms and permitted member states to implement revenue-based investment obligations to support local industries. Our article situates the Netherlands as a small-screen media industry and the base of Netflix’s first European headquarters. We contextualise the Dutch investment obligation within the evolving European media landscape, examining shifts in diversity and inclusion in Dutch VoD fiction productions from 2013 to 2023. We assess production trends by type and genre by critically analysing policy frameworks and production data from international SVoD platforms (e.g., Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+) and domestic steaming services (Videoland, NPO Start/Plus). Our findings reveal significant gaps in genre diversity and underinvestment in high-cost historical dramas and fantasy/horror/sci-fi series, highlighting a decade-long reliance on mainstream-oriented genres, including drama and crime series. This context underscores the importance of the new regulation in addressing these disparities and critically examines the requirements of the new regulation. Our article contributes to understanding the state of Dutch VoD production and evaluates the potential of the investment obligation to foster cultural and genre diversity in Dutch VoD fiction.

This article provides a broad spectrum about the nanoprodrug fabrication advances co‐driven by prodrug and nanotechnology development to potentiate cancer treatment. The nanoprodrug inherits the features of both prodrug concept and nanomedicine know‐how, attempts to solve underexploited challenge in cancer treatment cooperatively. Prodrugs can release bioactive drugs on‐demand at specific sites to reduce systemic toxicity, this is done by using the special properties of the tumor microenvironment, such as pH value, glutathione concentration, and specific overexpressed enzymes; or by using exogenous stimulation, such as light, heat, and ultrasound. The nanotechnology, manipulating the matter within nanoscale, has high relevance to certain biological conditions, and has been widely utilized in cancer therapy. Together, the marriage of prodrug strategy which shield the side effects of parent drug and nanotechnology with pinpoint delivery capability has conceived highly camouflaged Trojan horse to maneuver cancerous threats. Prodrugs release bioactives on‐demand at diseased sites to reduce systemic toxicity of parent drugs; the nanotechnology formulate the prodrug into nanosized. Their marriage boosts an emerging and effective solution to cancerous implications and beyond. The nanoprodrug inherits the features of both prodrug concept and nanomedicine expertise, attempting to address unmet needs in cancer treatment cooperatively.

SF014/#578 Extensive peritonectomy of ovarian cancer by region partitioning algorithm under the guidance of membrane anatomy
2023
IntroductionTo show extensive peritonectomy of ovarian cancer by region partitioning algorithm under the guidance of membrane anatomy.DescriptionThe theory of membrane anatomy is based on the premise that cell lineages of different organs do not mix at the boundary during embryonic development, the surface of each organ is covered by an envelope like structure. The key to success is to correctly identify the envelope of organs, find the white filaments (also called angel hair) in the membrane space and enter the right anatomical interface between organs. The scope of extensive peritonectomy includes the resection of all parietal peritoneum, part of visceral peritoneum, some mesentery and ligaments. The region partitioning algorithm was used to divide the whole abdominopelvic cavity into three parts by taking two lines, one was the upper edge of true pelvis, the other was the lowest margin of costal arch on both sides. Peeling the peritoneum by antagonistic drawing from the median abdominal incision to both sides of the lateral peritoneum by the way of envelopment from the periphery to the center.Conclusion/ImplicationsThe implementation of extensive peritonectomy by region partitioning algorithm under the guidance of membrane anatomy marked R0 cytoreductive surgery for ovarian cancer changed from the removal of scattered lesions or organs to a set of orderly and complete narrative surgical march, which can not only improved the thoroughness and safety of the operation, but also avoided omitting the invisible peritoneal metastasis to the naked eye, helped surgeons to clarify technique routes, and reached the realm of nature.

The Duality of Empowerment and Marginalization in Microtask Crowdsourcing: Giving Voice to the Less Powerful Through Value Sensitive Design1
2016
Crowdsourcing (CS) of micro tasks is a relatively new, open source work form enabled by information and communication technologies. While anecdotal evidence of its benefits abounds, our understanding of the phenomenon’s societal consequences remains limited. Drawing on value sensitive design (VSD), we explore microtask CS as perceived by crowd workers, revealing their values as a means of informing the design of CS platforms. Analyzing detailed narratives of 210 crowd workers participating in Amazon’s Mechanical Turk (MTurk), we uncover a set of nine values they share: access, autonomy, fairness, transparency, communication, security, accountability, making an impact, and dignity. We find that these values are implicated in four crowdsourcing structures: compensation, governance, technology, and microtask. Two contrasting perceptions—empowerment and marginalization—coexist, forming a duality of microtask CS. The study contributes to the CS and VSD literatures, heightens awareness of worker marginalization in microtask CS, and offers guidelines for improving CS practice. Specifically, we offer recommendations regarding the ethical use of crowd workers (including for academic research), and call for improving MTurk platform design for greater worker empowerment.
