Potential impacts of summer temperatures in Iraq on the subsequent season's rainfall
Under anthropogenic climate change, Iraq has been affected by rising temperatures. This trend has been evident since the 1970s. Rainfall has taken a general downward trend in all regions of the country. In this study, we analyzed the potential effects of summer temperatures on the subsequent season's rainfall in Iraq. The Mann–Kendall test and simple correlation coefficient were used to find climate correlation and coupling. The results showed an inverse pattern with an opposite relationship between temperature and rainfall, and a parallel pattern, showing a direct relationship. The parallel correlation pattern was less common than the negative correlation pattern. The correlation between summer temperatures and total rainfall in the following season showed a negative relationship, and June was the summer month most closely linked to rainfall. The upcoming season tended to be dry when June's temperature was higher than average. Synoptic correlation and coupling were also performed for two years of data. The first (1993) had moderate temperature and humidity in the subsequent season. The second (2010) had hot, dry weather and no precipitation in the subsequent season. The atmospheric conditions were different, and each year had different atmospheric patterns. This contributed to making the first year moderate and humid, while the second year was hot and dry.
Response to MHC‐based olfactory cues in a mate choice context in two species of darter (Percidae: Etheostoma)
Mate choice is hypothesized to play an important role in maintaining high diversity at major histocompatibility complex (MHC) genes in vertebrates. Many studies have revealed that females across taxa prefer the scent of males with MHC genotypes different to their own. In this study we tested the “opposites‐attract” hypothesis in two species of darter with known differences in female criteria used in mate choice: in the fantail darters (a paternal‐care species), females prefer males with visual traits related to nest guarding and egg tending, while in rainbow darters (not a paternal‐care species) female mate choice criteria are unknown. In dichotomous mate‐choice trials, we presented females of both species with the scents of conspecific males with MHC class IIb genotypes that were either similar or dissimilar to that of the focal female. We evaluated the proportion of time each female spent with each male and calculated the average strength of female preference for both species. Female fantail darters demonstrated a preference for the scent of males with similar (rather than dissimilar) MHC genotypes, but this result was not statistically significant. Rainbow darter females showed no preference for the scent of males with similar or dissimilar MHC genotypes. Our results do not support the “opposites‐attract” hypothesis in darters. ‘Site of struggle’: The paradox of Black liberation theology
The paradoxical nature of liberation theologies for African Christians has, for some time, been an intense subject of contestation. It has produced some polarised communities and made them acceptable on the basis of biblical interpretation. Liberation theological jargons such as ‘God sides with the poor’ and ‘God is for the oppressed’ seem to exemplify this attitude. As an acceptable standard of practice, this form of polarisation has been sustained through theological dogmas and ecclesiological dispositions. As a result, the South African biblical scholar, Itumeleng Mosala, has noted how the Bible is a ‘site of struggle’, which permits ideological contestations through biblical interpretation. His ideological formulations were later explored and expanded upon by Gerald O. West on ‘serving the sighs of the working class in South Africa with Marxist analysis of the Bible as a site of struggle’. This important work critically reflects on Itumeleng Mosala’s contribution to Black theology and its significance within the South African context. It considers Mosala’s use of Marxist concepts such as ‘mode of production’, his understanding of the relationship between biblical text and interpretive context and his ‘prophetic’ warnings about working with an ideologically uncontested Bible. It is to the latter – working with an ideologically uncontested Bible, that this paper is sorely focused. Contribution: It explores the paradoxical nature of liberation theologies, specifically Black theology, in African Christianity, and how it has failed to critically engage with the Bible as a ‘site of struggle’ within the South African context.
