This book recounts a little-known history of the estimated 2,000 babies born to black GIs and white British women in the second world war. The African-American press named these children ‘brown babies’; the British called them ‘half-castes’. Black GIs, in this segregated army, were forbidden to marry their white girl-friends. Nearly half of the children were given up to children’s homes but few were adopted, thought ‘too hard to place’. There has been minimal study of these children and the difficulties they faced, such as racism in a (then) very white Britain, lack of family or a clear identity. The book will present the stories of over fifty of these children, their stories contextualised in terms of government policy and attitudes of the time. Accessibly written, with stories both heart-breaking and uplifting, the book is illustrated throughout with photographs.

Immigrants from South Asia first began settling in Washington and Oregon in the nineteenth century, but because of restrictions placed on Asian immigration to the United States in the early twentieth century, the vast majority have come to the region since World War II.Roots and Reflectionsuses oral history to show how South Asian immigrant experiences were shaped by the region and how they differed over time and across generations. This collection of annotated oral histories records the personal stories of twenty Chinese women who lived in the wartime capital of Chongqing during China's War of Resistance against Japan during World War II. By presenting women's remembrances of the war, this study examines the interplay between oral history and traditional historical narrative, public discourse and private memories. The women interviewed came from differing social, economic, and educational backgrounds and experienced the war in a variety of ways, some of them active in the communist resistance and others trying to support families or pursue educations in the face of wartime upheaval. Their stories demonstrate that the War of Resistance had two faces: one presented by official propaganda and characterized by an upbeat unified front against Japan, the other a record of invisible private stories and a sobering national experience of death and suffering. The accounts of how women coped, worked, and lived during the war years in the Chongqing region recast historical understanding of the roles played by ordinary people in wartime and give women a public voice and face that, until now, have been missing from scholarship on the war.

In this long-term community study of the freedom movement in rural, majority-black Claiborne County, Mississippi, Emilye Crosby explores the impact of the African American freedom struggle on small communities in general and questions common assumptions that are based on the national movement. The legal successes at the national level in the mid 1960s did not end the movement, Crosby contends, but rather emboldened people across the South to initiate waves of new actions around local issues. Escalating assertiveness and demands of African Americans--including the reality of armed self-defense--were critical to ensuring meaningful local change to a remarkably resilient system of white supremacy. In Claiborne County, a highly effective boycott eventually led the Supreme Court to affirm the legality of economic boycotts for political protest. NAACP leader Charles Evers (brother of Medgar) managed to earn seemingly contradictory support from the national NAACP, the segregationist Sovereignty Commission, and white liberals. Studying both black activists and the white opposition, Crosby employs traditional sources and more than 100 oral histories to analyze the political and economic issues in the postmovement period, the impact of the movement and the resilience of white supremacy, and the ways these issues are closely connected to competing histories of the community.

Makalede, halkbilimci, etnolog Mustafa Muhtar Kutlu’nun bir etnografa dönüşme serüveni konu edilmektedir. Kutlu, göçer kültürü ve etno-fotografi alanındaki çalışmalarıyla tanınmaktadır. Ancak bu konulardaki ününü yürüttüğü etnografik alan araştırmaları sayesinde kazandığı ileri sürülebilir. Kutlu’nun biyografisinin de anlattığı gibi, bir etnograf olmak ve etnografik araştırma yürütmek, uzun bir süreçte kazanılan bilgi ve yetenekler sayesinde mümkün olabilmektedir. Kutlu, ilk alan araştırmalarını Nermin Erdentuğ, Sedat Veyis Örnek ve Attila Erden’in Seminer adlı dersleri kapsamında, lisans eğitimi sırasında hazırlamıştır. Bu araştırmaları, ailesinin yaşadığı Merzifon ve köklerinin bulunduğu yerler olan Uluborlu’da yürütmüştür. Kutlu, makalelerindeki gerçekçi dilden farklı olarak anılarında itirafa dayalı bir anlatım dili kullanmıştır. Dolayısıyla sadece sahadaki başarılarından değil, karşılaştığı sorunlardan, hatalı davranışlarından, deneyerek öğrendiği uygun davranışlardan, kılavuzlar ve kaynak kişilerle kurduğu ilişkilerinden de söz etmiştir.
