Between the sixth and twentieth centuries, the Benedictine Abbey of Monte Cassino (est. 529) experienced a cycle of atrocities which forever transformed its identity. This book examines how such a tumultuous history has been constructed, remembered, and represented from the Middle Ages to the present day. It uses this singular and pivotal case to analyse the historical process of remembering and its impact on modern representations of the past. Exactly how Monte Cassino is remembered is distinctive and diagnostic. The abbey is recognizable today as a beacon of western civilization, culture, and learning precisely because of its 'destruction tradition' over fourteen centuries. The present manuscript aims at raising awareness of the endless possibilities of fractional calculus applied not only to system identification and control engineering, but also into sensing and filtering domains. The creation of the fractance device has enabled the physical realization of a new array of sensors capable of gathering more information. The same fractional-order electronic component has led to the possibility of exploring analog filtering techniques from a practical perspective, enlarging the horizon to a wider frequency range, with increased robustness to component variation, stability and noise reduction. Furthermore, fractional-order digital filters have developed to provide an alternative solution to higher-order integer-order filters, with increased design flexibility and better performance. The present study is a comprehensive review of the latest advances in fractional-order sensors and filters, with a focus on design methodologies and their real-life applicability reported in the last decade. The potential enhancements brought by the use of fractional calculus have been exploited as well in sensing and filtering techniques. Several extensions of the classical sensing and filtering methods have been proposed to date. The basics of fractional-order filters are reviewed, with a focus on the popular fractional-order Kalman filter, as well as those related to sensing. A detailed presentation of fractional-order filters is included in applications such as data transmission and networking, electrical and chemical engineering, biomedicine and various industrial fields.

The history of monastic institutions in the Middle Ages may at first appear remarkably uniform and predictable. Medieval commentators and modern scholars have observed how monasteries of the tenth to early twelfth centuries experienced long periods of stasis alternating with bursts of rapid development known as reforms. Charismatic leaders by sheer force of will, and by assiduously recruiting the support of the ecclesiastical and lay elites, pushed monasticism forward toward reform, remediating the inevitable decline of discipline and government in these institutions. A lack of concrete information on what happened at individual monasteries is not regarded as a significant problem, as long as there is the possibility to reconstruct the reformers' ''program.'' While this general picture makes for a compelling narrative, it doesn't necessarily hold up when one looks closely at the history of specific institutions.
InMonastic Reform as Process, Steven Vanderputten puts the history of monastic reform to the test by examining the evidence from seven monasteries in Flanders, one of the wealthiest principalities of northwestern Europe, between 900 and 1100. He finds that the reform of a monastery should be studied not as an \"exogenous shock\" but as an intentional blending of reformist ideals with existing structures and traditions. He also shows that reformist government was cumulative in nature, and many of the individual achievements and initiatives of reformist abbots were only possible because they built upon previous achievements. The power electronic converters and grid‐connected filters were important components of the permanent magnet direct drive wind power generation system whose performance directly determines the quality of wind power generation. In past modeling, analysis, and control studies, capacitive and inductive components were often treated as integral‐order components. However, the inductance and capacitance components in the actual permanent magnet direct drive wind generator were fractional‐order components, and their electrical characteristics will change with the change of order, which had an important impact on the dynamic and static characteristics of the system. In this paper, the mathematical model of the fractional‐order LCL (FOLCL) filter was derived. Through simulation, it could be seen that the FOLCL filter can avoid resonance fundamentally. At the same time, the fractional‐order PI (FOPI) controller was introduced into the machine‐side current converter, and the parameters of the FOPI controller of the outer speed loop and the inner current loop were adjusted by using the time‐domain optimization method. The results showed that the efficiency of the FOPI controller was significantly better than that of the integer‐order PI controller in realizing maximum wind energy capture. It provides theoretical support and practical application value for the stable operation of the wind power generation system.
