Niger parliament Speaker denies President Tandja against talks with opposition
[[Seini Oumarou]] Personally, I would like people to tell me, because it is, after all, the mediator [Abdulsalami Abubakar] who is looking for this [inter-Niger] dialogue. He is the one trying to help us arrive at the needed dialogue, and I would like people to tell me where and when the Popular Movement for the radical Reform of the Republic [MPRR] or the president of the republic has once said that he is against this dialogue or has decided to put an end to the dialogue.
Niger: Prime Minister Oumarou urges northern rebels to \lay down\ arms
As you are aware, tomorrow 24 April 2009, our country will be celebrating, inch'Allah, the 14th anniversary of the National Concord Day. Indeed, on 24 April 1995, the Niger authorities and the front leaders of the former armed rebellion signed in Niamey the first peace accord called the 24 April 1995 Peace Accord, thus making the historic decision to put an end to five years of hostilities. This accord was later followed by other accords, including the Algiers Additional Protocol of 28 November 1997 and the Ndjamena Agreement of 21 August 1998, thus opening the way for lasting peace and permanent stability in our country. By signing these accords, Niger citizens have expressed their commitment to the ideals of peace and demonstrated their unflagging desire to build, jointly and in unity, a bright future of peace and progress for our country. During the ceremony known as the Peace Flame presided over by the president of the republic and head of state and before the national and international community, and in view of the situation then prevailing, we have made firm commitments that give priority to the paths of democracy and the rule of law, in the prevention and resolution of any conflict. My dear countrymen, regarding the implementation of the said peace accords, I thank God, thanks in particular to the efforts of the government and the important support of our technical and financial partners as well as Niger's friends, significant progress has been made, namely, in the development of the area affected, through the construction of several socioeconomic infrastructures that were supported by the special programme of the president of the republic.

News: Briefing room - April 2011 to May 2011 - Niger: Return to civilian rule
The triumph by the opposition is \"very much an important step\", says Thomas Wilson, an analyst with Control Risks. \"Had [Seini Oumarou], the long term protege of [Tandja], come into power, we would have seen many of the same faces that Tandja...
