Il pallone assente. Calcio, giochi nei libri di lettura per la scuola elementare tra il 1945 e il 1970
2023
The paper examines how between 1945 and the first half of the 1970s, football and, more generally, sport was mentioned in textbooks for primary school. For a long time this aspect was either completely ignored or served to admonish and show what the risks of playing in the street are: from colds, to peelings to not infrequently tragic and lethal outcomes. Outdoor games are viewed with pedagogical suspicion and even the simple route between home and school is fraught with danger if one does not behave correctly. Then slowly, around the mid-1960s, textbooks saw timid signs of renewal but prejudices, cautions and rules to conform to did not cease. Keywords. Development of coordination abilities of mentally retarded children in physical education lessons
2024
The aim of the study to develop a methodology for improving the level of development of the coordination abilities of mentally retarded children aged 8-9 years in the lessons of adaptive physical education. Methods The study was organized at a special correctional school from September 13 to December 16, 2023. 14 schoolchildren aged 8-9 took part in the experiment. Children from the control group studied according to the usual program, and children from the experimental group performed complexes of coordination exercises and used outdoor games during lessons on adaptive physical culture. The level of development of coordination abilities of mentally retarded children aged 8-9 years was determined by three tests: 3x10m shuttle run, one-leg stand, obstacle course. The Student’s T-Test was the main method of mathematical processing of the research results. Results Prior to the start of the study, the difference in performance in control tests in both groups was not significant and not reliable (p>0.05), which indicates the homogeneity of the groups. After the end of the pedagogical experiment, the indicators of coordination abilities of children from the control group improved, but not significantly or significantly (p>0.05). Significant positive changes occurred in the experimental group for all tests. In the shuttle run, the indicators became higher by 0.5 seconds (p>0.05), in the one-leg stand test, the indicators improved by 1.1 seconds (p>0.05), and in the obstacle course test, the indicators improved by 1.2 seconds (p<0.05). An intergroup comparison showed a difference in two of the three indicators of coordination abilities when the significant difference is the shuttle run (p<0.05) and the obstacle course (p<0.05). Conclusion The developed experimental methodology for the development of coordination abilities for mentally retarded children aged 8-9 years in the lessons of adaptive physical education has proven its effectiveness and is recommended for use in correctional schools in working with mentally retarded children. Physical education and training
2021
This book offers a comprehensive synthesis of over 40 years of research on models in physical education to suggest Models-based Practice (MbP) as an innovative future approach to physical education. It lays out the ideal conditions for MbP to flourish by situating pedagogical models at the core of physical education programs and allowing space for local agency and the co-construction of practice.
Starting from the premise that true MbP does not yet exist, the book makes a case for the term \"pedagogical model\" over alternatives such as curriculum model and instructional model, and explains how learners' cognitive, social, affective and psychomotor needs should be organised in ways that are distinctive and unique to each model. It examines the core principles underpinning the pedagogical models that make up MbP, including pedagogical models as organising centres for program design and as design specifications for developing local programs. The book also explores how a common structure can be applied to analyse pedagogical models at macro, meso and micro levels of discourse. Having created a language through which to talk about pedagogical models and MbP, the book concludes by identifying the conditions - some existing and some aspirational - under which MbP can prosper in reforming physical education.
An essential read for academics, doctoral and post-graduate students, and pre-service and in-service teachers, Models-based Practice in Physical Education is a vital point of reference for anyone who is interested in pedagogical models and wants to embrace this potential future of physical education.

Te Atarauarangihaeata: Field of dreams
2013
In 1932 Lord and Lady Bledisloe purchased five hundred hectares of land at Waitangi and gifted it to the people of NZ through the Waitangi National Trust Deed. In 2012 one of those prime coastal hectares was signed over to the Bay of Islands club, Ki-o-Rahi Akotanga Iho (KAI), to develop a carved ki-o-rahi field. If you wanted a template for racial harmony and co-operation I would suggest Te Atarauarangihaeata (‘Shadows of the First Light', referring to the shadows of the carved pou when the sun rises).

English National Identity and Football Fan Culture
2014,2016
In recent years, scholars have understood the increasing use of the St George's Cross by football fans to be evidence of a rise in a specifically 'English' identity. This has emerged as part of a wider 'national' response to broader political processes such as devolution and European integration which have fragmented identities within the UK. Using the controversial figurational sociological approach advocated by the twentieth-century theorist Norbert Elias, this book challenges such a view, drawing on ethnographic research amongst fans to explore the precise nature of the relationship between contemporary English national identity and football fan culture. Examining football fans' expressions of Englishness in public houses and online spaces, the author discusses the effects of globalization, European integration and UK devolution on English society, revealing that the use of the St George's Cross does not signal the emergence of a specifically 'English' national consciousness, but in fact masks a more complex, multi-layered process of national identity construction. A detailed and grounded study of identity, nationalism and globalization amongst football fans, English National Identity and Football Fan Culture will appeal to scholars and students of politics, sociology and anthropology with interests in ethnography, the sociology of sport, fan cultures, globalization and contemporary national identities.
Nature-Based Routines for Outdoor Learning
2024
Like a murmuration of birds, the children run and skip through the open soccer field to our morning meeting place. This active burst of flight was just preceded by a handful of minutes of the students silently observing the morning landscape right outside the school building. In this transition from the building to the outdoors, children and teachers observe the clouds, gather weather data, and listen to the soundscape for birds. I notice icy dew on the grass and share my find with a student. One student’s job for the day is to be the photographer, and they stand in
