A rainbow-colored Fourth The Alternative Family Picnic at Yerba Buena Gardens is an Independe nce Day celebration for everybody
RICK SHELTON was a bit surprised to learn that his alter-ego, Mr. Pat-A-Cake, part of the impressive and diverse entertainment set for the fourth annual \"Ol' Fashioned 4th of July Alternative Family Picnic\" - to be held Tuesday in San Francisco's Yerba Buena Gardens - was described in the promotional literature for the event as the \"gay rainbow clown.\" Yes, Shelton is gay and yes, Mr. Pat-A-Cake is a clown - one who wears a rainbow-colored wig, in fact. And, as the father of two teenage boys, Shelton's family certainly qualifies as \"alternative.\" It's one of the reasons Shelton is excited to be part of an event that also features, for example, the world premiere of a work by renowed composer Jennifer Higdon. It's not as though Shelton has a big ad in the Yellow Pages featuring Mr. Pat-A-Cake, who has been on the local clown circuit since 1981, as a gay clown. Yet Shelton, 46, seemed more puzzled than bothered. It's hard to ruffle a clown, even if he may be out of costume at the time.
