Michel Rochon.
Bioregions get a redistricting
With a new planetwide analysis of vertebrate life, an international team has used 21st century science to update an iconic 1876 map of Earth's zoological regions. By incorporating data on 21,037 species of mammals, birds and amphibians, Jean-Philippe Lessard of McGill University in Montreal and his colleagues have revised a zoological map created by Alfred Russel Wallace, an oft-overlooked cofounder of the theory of evolution. Wallace's map divided Earth's landmasses into six major regions, each with its own distinctive blend of vertebrates.
Nursing home neglect: Neglect is a systemic problem
The last years of Gloria's mother's life were an ordeal. While in her nursing home, the 86-year-old woman had unexplained bruises and open sores on her back. She fell 16 times and almost died of dehydration before pneumonia finally took her. [Janice Lessard] was on a panel of geriatric experts and elder advocates who told the Romanow commission on health care that the system is failing a vulnerable segment of the population. \"In (an) Ontario university teaching hospital complex, the prevalence of malnutrition and/or dehydration in the hospitalized elderly was found to be 60 per cent,\" the panel noted. Those findings have been borne out in studies south of the border as well, Lessard says.

Failing grade
Heart-breaking tales of physical neglect -- diaper rash and bed sores -- coupled with vile verbal abuse, are coming out of nursing- homes across Canada, prompting critics to insist there is a systemic problem facing the elderly in long-term care facilities The last years of Gloria's mother's life were an ordeal. While in her nursing home, the 86-year-old woman had unexplained bruises and open sores on her back. She fell 16 times and almost died of dehydration before pneumonia finally took her. \"In (an) Ontario university teaching hospital complex, the prevalence of malnutrition and/or dehydration in the hospitalized elderly was found to be 60 per cent,\" the panel noted. Those findings have been borne out in studies south of the border as well, [Janice Lessard] says. The situation is even worse for seniors outside hospitals.
