This is the most comprehensive English translation of the work of Günter Eich, one of the greatest postwar German poets. The author of the POW poem \"Inventory,\" among one of the most famous lyrics in the German language, Eich was rivaled only by Paul Celan as the leading poet in the generation after Gottfried Benn and Bertolt Brecht. Expertly translated and introduced by Michael Hofmann, this collection gathers eighty poems, many drawn from Eich's later work and most of them translated here for the first time. The volume also includes the original German texts on facing pages. As an early member of \"Gruppe 47\" (from which Günter Grass and Heinrich Böll later shot to prominence), Eich (1907-72) was at the vanguard of an effort to restore German as a language for poetry after the vitriol, propaganda, and lies of the Third Reich. Short and clear, these are timeless poems in which the ominousness of fairy tales meets the delicacy and suggestiveness of Far Eastern poetry. In his late poems, he writes frequently, movingly, and often wryly of infirmity and illness. \"To my mind,\" Hofmann writes, \"there's something in Eich of Paul Klee's pictures: both are homemade, modest in scale, immediately delightful, inventive, cogent.\" Unjustly neglected in English, Eich finds his ideal translator here.

Founded by F.T. Marinetti in 1909, Italian Futurism was the first major avant-garde movement of the twentieth century. It was also one of the longest lasting, having continued as long as Marinetti and his colleagues remained active – until 1944. Despite the provocative manifestos and outrageous public performances that earned its members international fame, their remarkable poetic achievements have received little post-war scholarly attention. This anthology, by the widely recognized Italian Futurist scholar Willard Bohn, seeks to correct this oversight. It is commonly believed that Futurist poetry rarely strayed from three main subjects: modern machinery, warfare, and the Fascist dream. Bohn demonstrates that, in reality, it was much more diverse. Although military, mechanical, and patriotic themes occur in a number of poems, including some in this volume, the Futurist repertoire was actually much larger. Ranging from Symbolist exercises to radical experiments worthy of Dada or Surrealism, it was also surprisingly creative. Italian Futurist Poetrycontains more than 100 poems (both Italian and English versions) by sixty-one poets from across Italy. Arranged in roughly chronological order, the anthology reflects numerous aesthetic, historical, and cultural developments. It is a major contribution to the understanding of modern Italian culture and, indeed, of twentieth-century avant-garde literature in general.

X-XVI) zusammengefaßt; der Testimonien-Apparat konnte hier entfallen. Einen Abriß der Überlieferungsgeschichte bietet das Kapitel 'Zur Geschichte des Textes' (GT) im Prolegomena-Band. - Eine typographische Besonderheit der vorliegenden Ausgabe stellt die Hervorhebung der direkten Reden durch Kursivsatz dar. Damit wird dem 'Fokalisations'-Unterschied zwischen Erzähler-Text und Figuren-Sprache Rechnung getragen, dem im Kommentar besondere Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt wird (s. dazu das Prolegomena-Kapitel 'Homerische Poetik in Stichwörtern' s.v. 'Sekundäre Fokalisation').

In showing how poets have drawn on mass culture, technology, and material images to incorporate the idea, technique, and experience of cinema into writing, Wall-Romana documents the long history of cross-media concepts and practices often thought to emerge with the digital. In showing the cinematic consciousness of Mallarme and Breton and calling for a reappraisal of the influential poetry theory of the early filmmaker Jean Epstein, Cinepoetry reevaluates the bases of literary modernism. The book also explores the crucial link between trauma and trans-medium experiments in the wake of two world wars and highlights the marginal identity of cinepoets who were often Jewish, gay, foreign-born, or on the margins. What results is a broad rethinking of the relationship between film and literature. The episteme of cinema, the book demonstates, reached the very core of its supposedly highbrow rival, while at the same time modern poetry cultivated the technocultural savvy that is found today in slams, e-poetry, and poetic-digital hybrids.

This interdisciplinary study examines the literary, artistic and biographical afterlives in England of the great sixteenth-century Italian poet Torquato Tasso, from before his death to the end of the nineteenth century. Focusing on the lasting impact of his once famous poem Gerusalemme liberata across a spectrum of arts, it aims to stimulate a revival of interest in a neglected poetic masterpiece and its author, some fifty years after the last account of the poet in English. The influence of Tasso's poem is traced and analysed in the literary works of Spenser, Milton, Shakespeare and Daniel, and consideration is also given to its impact on the visual and musical arts in England, in works by Van Dyck, Poussin and Handel. A second strand focuses on English responses to Tasso's troubled life in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, exemplified in Byron's memorable impersonation of the poet's voice in The Lament of Tasso .
