Demonic Possession and Exorcism in Early Modern England
2004,2007,2009
This book is exclusively devoted to demonic possession and exorcism in early modern England. It offers modernized versions of the most significant early modern texts on nine cases of demonic possession from the period 1570 to 1650, the key period in English history for demonic possession. The nine stories were all written by eyewitnesses or were derived from eyewitness reports. They involve matters of life and death, sin and sanctity, guilt and innocence, of crimes which could not be committed and punishments which could not be deserved. The nine critical introductions which accompany the stories address the different strategic intentions of those who wrote them. The modernized texts and critical introductions are placed within the context of a wide-ranging general Introduction to demonic possession in England across the period 1550 to 1700.

L’affaire de la Mary Fortune. Les traités de Saint-Germain de 1632 et la souveraineté sur le Canada
by
De Waele1, Michel
in
Possession
2020

Law's regulatory relevance? : property, power and market economies
\"Focusing on the information economy, free trade exploitation, and confronting terrorist violence, Mark Findlay critiques law's regulatory commodification. Conventional legal regulatory modes such as theft and intellectual property are being challenged by waves of property access and use, which demand the rethinking of property 'rights' and their relationships with the law. Law's Regulatory Relevance? theorises how the law should reposition itself in order to help rather than hinder new pathways of market power, by confronting the dominant neo-liberal economic model that values property through scarcity. With in-depth analysis of empirical case studies, the author explores how law is returning to its communal utility in strengthening social ties, which will in turn restore property as social relations rather than market commodities. In a world of contested narratives about property valuing, law needs to ground its inherent regulatory relevance in the ordering of social change. This book is an essential read for students of law and regulation wanting to explore the contemporary dissent against neo-liberal market economies and the issues of communitarian governance and social resistance. It will also appeal to policy makers interested in law's failing regulatory capacity, particularly through criminalising attacks on conventional property rights, by offering insights into why law's regulatory relevance is at a cross-roads.\"-- Provided by publisher.
Law of Adverse Possession
The book examines the Law of Adverse Possession in both the UK and Nigeria, and gives a critique of the ways in which it is regarded by both the State and the judicial system in these jurisdictions. Although much has been written about adverse possession from an Anglo-American perspective, the Nigerian aspect of this book is unique and brings an important point of difference when thinking about the right to settle, work and own land in an international arena. This book will be of interest to students of law (especially comparative and property law); to scholars and activists with an interest in land settlement by indigenous and dispossessed peoples; a useful guide for the court in the dispensation of justice; and a pilot for the State in managing property relations.
Predicative possession choice in Argentinian Spanish
2025
This study investigates the expression of predicative possession in Argentinian Spanish, focusing on the alternation between two constructions: tener (‘have’) + NP and estar con (‘be with’) + NP. Building on previous research, we explore the factors that determine speakers’ choices between these constructions, particularly the influence of temporal context and the presence of adverbs. Using a forced-choice experimental design, participants were presented with vignettes varying in temporal duration (durative vs. non-durative) and adverbial modification (extending, limiting, or none). Results show a strong overall preference for the tener + NP construction, particularly in durative contexts. However, the estar con + NP construction is more likely to be selected in non-durative contexts, especially when a limiting adverb is present. These findings suggest that the distinction between the two constructions is not purely semantic but also pragmatically modulated by temporal and contextual factors. We argue that this pattern reflects a subset-superset relationship between the two constructions, where tener + NP can cover a broader temporal scope than estar con + NP. This overlap mirrors cross-linguistic findings on possessive constructions and aspectual distinctions, with implications for understanding grammaticalization processes in Romance languages.

Spirit Mediumship and Mental Health: Therapeutic Self-transformation Among Dang-kis in Singapore
2023
While some early studies suggested that spirit mediums were psychiatrically ill individuals who found a culturally sanctioned role, subsequent work has found that they are generally in good physical and mental health. While the calling to be a healer often involves an initiatory illness, practitioners go on to play demanding social roles, suggesting that involvement in mediumship may be therapeutic for the practitioner. This study focuses on dang-ki healing, a form of Chinese spirit mediumship practiced in Singapore to explore whether participation in dang-ki healing is therapeutic for the mediums. We interviewed eight dang-kis from five temples about their life trajectories and assessed their mental health status with standardized psychological questionnaires. Most of the dang-kis did not appear to suffer from clinically significant emotional distress. Their narratives suggest that involvement in dang-ki mediumship may have therapeutic effects in which the embodied experience of self plays a central role. The dang-kis experienced changes in social identity, bodily experiences during spirit possession, and their overall sense of self through recurrent possession rituals. In general, the practice of spirit mediumship illustrates how the experiences and meanings of the self are constructed and reconstructed through body-world relations in ways that may confer a sense of wellness and social efficacy.
