Psychopathology and the family

Lives across Time/Growing up
LIVES ACROSS TIME describes a 30-year study of 76 individuals from birth to adulthood. The book narrates their varied life paths and the influence of their families and communities on their development. We place the results into the categories of those whose lives are fairly continuous from early childhood, and those whose lives are not; those whose lives exceeded expectations in the face of early troubled parenting, and those who did not fulfill the promise of initially sound parenting and healthy emotional growth – typically because of subsequent trauma – and developed psychiatric syndromes. While life histories may fall into configurations with shared characteristics, by listening psychoanalytically we found something basic in the stories that parents and their now adult children tell about themselves: the individual story is humanizing and compelling. Letting the subjects speak at length brought them alive for us as researchers. There was a sense of awe in watching the children’s inner worlds evolve over time. By narrating the participants’ own voices we hope to share the wonder we experienced so the reader’s journey also becomes one of discovery.

Understanding Religion and Spirituality in Clinical Practice is a volume in the clinical practice monograph series from the Society of Analytical Psychology. This series is intended primarily for trainees on psychotherapy and psychodynamic counselling courses, and for those who are newly qualified. Here, Margaret Clark considers the difficulties clinicians may encounter when patients talk about God or about their spiritual life, and how necessary it is for therapists to examine their own image of God and their own understanding of spirituality, so that they can distinguish these from those of their patients. She emphasizes how varied are people’s images and understanding of what “God” stands for, and how in healthy development these will change over time. The book demonstrates, through numerous clinical vignettes, how clinicians can understand a patient’s talking about religion or about God – hearing the voice of God, having a vision of God, or being convinced that God wants them to act in a particular way; or, equally, seeing the Devil. The book differentiates between religion and spirituality, and between religious and spiritual aims and practices. It also distinguishes some mystical and spiritual experiences from those which are considered psychotic. There is reference to major theorists throughout, particularly to Freud, Jung, and Winnicott.
Hearing Voices
The meanings and causes of hearing voices that others cannot hear (auditory verbal hallucinations, in psychiatric parlance) have been debated for thousands of years. Attachment Therapy with Adolescents and Adults
This is a revised edition of an important title originally published in 2009. It is written primarily for psychotherapists and other practitioners and describes a new and effective form of dynamic therapy designed for working with adults and with adolescents. The theory, on which the new form of therapy is based, is centred in a paradigm that extends and crucially alters the paradigm for developmental psychology opened by the Bowlby/Ainsworth attachment theory. It describes a pre-programmed process, the dynamics sustaining attachment and interest sharing, which is activated as soon as people perceive that they are in danger. This process is made up of seven pre-programmed systems which interact with one another as an integrated whole. They include Bowlby's two complementary goal-corrected behavioural systems: attachment (also referred to as careseeking) and caregiving. Whenever the process is able to function effectively, it enables people to adapt more constructively and co-operatively to changing circumstances.
Psychology's Ghosts
