Accommodating Vichy: The Politics of Marcel Pagnol's \La Fille du puisatier\
From late 1940 through mid-1942 Marcel Pagnol accommodated to varying degrees the demands of the Vichy regime and the German occupiers in order to ensure the survival of his film production business. In so doing, he placed himself in the ambiguous grey zone of thought and action that stretched between the poles of proactive collaboration and proactive resistance. Pagnol's wartime activities, especially the history of his film La Fille du puisatier (The Well-Digger's Daughter, 1940), offer insight into how material interest, ideology, and necessity shaped French industrialists' reactions to the Occupation. Pagnol's itinerary also reveals the compromise and conflict that often lay below the surface of Franco-German politics, while highlighting the importance that both regimes attached to cinema as a tool of economics, cultural policy, and propaganda.

Reviving the Nuanced Concept of Mother Earth in an Era of Non-Sustainability: A Serresian Reading of Marcel Pagnol’s L’eau des collines
This essay examines the efforts of the writer Marcel Pagnol and the philosopher Michel Serres to revive the nuanced Amerindian metaphor of “Mother Earth” in the Anthropocene epoch. Given that faulty anthropocentric logic and the unfounded doctrine of human exceptionalism concretize the nexus of the current era of non-sustainability, Pagnol and Serres attempt to breathe life back into this often misunderstood, multifaceted concept in an effort to (re-)envision a healthier relationship with the cosmic whole that sustains the existence of all sentient and non-sentient beings. As this study highlights, this rich Amerindian metaphor opens up into philosophical, spiritual, and scientific dimensions. Moreover, this investigation of the common threads that exist between Pagnol’s prose and Serres’s interdisciplinary, unconventional philosophy reveals the deep symbolism of the Amerindian metaphor of “Mother Earth. This ecocentric concept could represent an invaluable point of departure for articulating the radical paradigm shift in our homocentric thinking that is paramount in order to avert the impending, anthropogenic ecological crisis that threatens to destroy all abundant life on this planet. Pagnol’s prose and Serres’s philosophy promote a different way of being in the world in a human-centered universe that is increasingly defined by an environmental calamity of epic proportions.

Le ne de négation dans Marius de Marcel Pagnol : pièce de théâtre (1929), film (1931) et remake (2013)
Différentes études suggèrent que le ne de négation se perd de plus en plus en français parlé (cf. Ashby, 2001 ; Armstrong et Smith, 2002 ; Hansen et Malderez, 2004). Notre travail pose la question de savoir si un tel développement peut également être observé dans l’oral mis en scène. Nous analysons pour ce faire le changement du langage mis en scène au fil du temps ainsi que le changement médial entre le drame écrit et son adaptation. Notre corpus se compose du drame Marius (1929) de Marcel Pagnol, du film Marius (1931) d’Alexander Korda et du remake Marius de Daniel Auteuil (2013). Nous avons analysé ce corpus selon l’approche classique de la sociolinguistique, en considérant le ne de négation comme variable sociolinguistique (cf. Labov, 1972). Nos résultats montrent que l’oral mis en scène dans le drame se distingue nettement de la façon dont parlent les personnages dans les films, puisque le ne y figure bien plus souvent. Par ailleurs, le nombre bien plus élevé de ne dans le remake de 2013 que dans la version de 1931 pourrait être une stratégie mise en place pour représenter de l’oral ancien.

Dans La gloire de mon pere, Marcel Pagnol aborde un genre qui se situe aux antipodes de l'écriture théåtrale, l'écriture autobiographique. Il ne peut plus s'effacer demere la voix de ses personnages. A la fois témoignage sur une époque disparue et petite chanson de piété filiale ?, le souvenir d'enfance constitue une mise a l'épreuve de l'authenticité de la vie de l'auteur.
