Woods Stirs, but Parnevik Isn't Shaken; Masters Champ 8 Back After 64; Swede Leads by 2
Tiger Woods had insisted only 24 hours earlier that he still had a chance to win the 126th British Open at Royal Troon, even though he was 13 shots off the lead with 36 holes to go. On another sparkling day of minimal breezes and maximum drama, he backed up those bold words by hurling a 64 at the field early today, sending booming roars from the crowd for each of his seven birdies and one eagle over surrounding land and sea. Now the 21-year-old Masters champion and everyone else must try to chase down Sweden's Jesper Parnevik, who responded to Woods's early challenge with a 5-under 66 that allowed him to move from three shots off the 36-hole lead posted by Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke into a two-shot lead over the wobbly Ulsterman. With birdies on his first two holes and two of his last three, Parnevik -- the quirky 32-year-old son of Sweden's most famous comedian who eats volcanic dust to cleanse his system and wears his cap bill turned up -- turned deadly serious in his assault on Royal Troon. The runner-up at the '94 Open down the lane at Turnberry finished in the sparkling sun at 11-under 202 through 54 holes, the first time in 10 major events he has held the lead after three rounds. The pressure that surely will accompany him to the first tee Sunday hardly seemed to faze him tonight.
Parnevik puts pain behind him after fears of humiliation
It's been a painful process for [JESPER PARNEVIK] and ahead of his return to the course today he admitted: \"It's going slower than I was hoping for. \"I've also got sciatica down a leg and I'm pretty much only here because it's my home event. \"And even if the hip does not flare up I'm going to have to rethink my practice habits because I've been known to hit a lot of balls.\"
Quote of the week Scot Region
What a great pity Tiger Woods always surrounded himself with lickspittles. Imagine if he had kept in touch with his match maker, the wacky Swede Jesper Parnevik.
