PENINSULA STOP ON WORLDWIDE VOYAGE
It was only a formality, since local organizers had long planned for Hokule'a (pronounced HO-koo-LAY-uh) and its crew to visit Hampton Roads as part of a four-year worldwide voyage begun in 2013 to spread a message of \"Malama Honua,\" or \"to care for island Earth.\" \"One goal (is) sharing Hokule'a with the world,\" [Miki Tomita] said. \"And sharing Hokule'a's story -- about how a voyaging canoe can also be a metaphor, or can be the vehicle for language revitalization, for cultural revitalization, for the belief that communities can heal their Earth and that children should be put at the center of that.\" Staff photos (color) by JUDITH LOWERY; The Hokule'a voyaging canoe arrives at the Bluewater Yachting Center in Hampton Friday for a two-week stay in Hampton Roads to promote its global message of conservation. The 62-foot double-hulled canoe is a replica of Polynesian boats used centuries ago to navigate the seas. After arriving in Hampton at the Bluewater Yachting Center, the crew, including Malia Morales, above, was greeted with leis from The Mariners' Museum. The Hokule'a is in the midst of a worldwide journey.
