Democratic Breakdown and the Decline of the Russian Military
2009,2007,2008
Why have Russian generals acquired an important political position since the Soviet Union's collapse while at the same time the effectiveness of their forces has deteriorated? Why have there been no radical defense reforms in Russia since the end of the cold war, even though they were high on the agenda of the country's new president in 2000? Democratic Breakdown and the Decline of the Russian Military explains these puzzles as it paints a comprehensive portrait of Russian military politics.

Major review of Russian Airborne Troops nears conclusion
2002
[Presenter] An inspection of the Airborne Troops is ending today, the first since the collapse of the USSR. This major review was prompted by the recent desertion from this unit in Ulyanovsk, when two deserters shot dead about 10 people in the space of 24 hours. Today the troops are serving under special conditions: no indulgences, constant and thorough briefing of the rank and file, and strict control over discipline among the personnel. [Correspondent] The General Staff is inspecting the Airborne Troops for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The formal reason is the desertion of two soldiers from the Ulyanovsk brigade, who shot dead 10 people. After this a commission was set up which is now inspecting all divisions of the Airborne Troops. [Correspondent] There are currently four divisions in the Airborne Troops. The Tula division is considered the best, at least in terms of its armaments. One regiment, the only one in the Airborne Troops, is equipped with the latest models of airborne fighting vehicles. According to the General Staff, the division will most likely be key to reform in the Airborne Troops.

Russia's former defence chief gives evidence in murdered journalist case
2001
Speaking about his personal attitude towards [Kholodov], [Pavel Grachev] noted again that his attitude to Kholodov was the same as to many other journalists who were not very professional when they wrote about the army. He said he believes that Kholodov did not express his own opinion, but was fulfilling the task the editor's office had given him. On the whole, Grachev's attitude to Kholodov was, as he said, not bad. At the same time, he admitted that there had been a time when he did express a negative attitude towards Kholodov when speaking on a television programme, because he had always been sensitive to publications in the mass media and was annoyed about one such article.
