Memory and the City in Ancient Israel
Ancient cities served as the actual, worldly landscape populated by \"material\" sites of memory. Some of these sites were personal and others were directly and intentionally involved in the shaping of a collective social memory, such as palaces, temples, inscriptions, walls, and gates. Many cities were also sites of social memory in a very different way. Like Babylon, Nineveh, or Jerusalem, they served as ciphers that activated and communicated various mnemonic worlds as they integrated multiple images, remembered events, and provided a variety of meanings in diverse ancient communities. Memory and the City in Ancient Israel contributes to the study of social memory in ancient Israel in the late Persian and early Hellenistic periods by exploring \"the city,\" both urban spaces and urban centers. It opens with a study that compares basic conceptualizing tendencies of cities in Mesopotamia with their counterparts in ancient Israel. Its essays then explore memories of gates, domestic spaces, threshing floors, palaces, city gardens and parks, natural and \"domesticated\" water in urban settings, cisterns, and wells. Finally, the studies turn to particular cities of memory in ancient Israel: Jerusalem, Samaria, Shechem, Mizpah, Tyre, Nineveh, and Babylon. The great reimagining

Victor Hugo et l’écopoétique de la ville au tournant de la Monarchie de Juillet
Victor Hugo’s enmeshment of nature and city in Les Orientales (1829) and Les Feuilles d’automne (1831) represents an ecopoetic lyric mode that draws from both material nature and urban surroundings. Eschewing a retreat from the city and the Virgilian trope of country respite, Hugo instead insists upon and dramatizes the tensions between nature and city as he heightens the drama of his dynamic and modernized lyric. As he wrote from the rustic outskirts of Paris, Hugo’s liminal habitat projected the interrelatedness of natural and urban landscapes as he developed an increasingly vibrant and experimental lyric that could no longer be confined to the staid forms of classical odes. L’imbrication de la nature et de la ville dans Les Orientales (1829) et Les Feuilles d’automne (1831) de Victor Hugo représente un mode lyrique écopoétique qui s’inspire à la fois de la nature matérielle et de l'environnement urbain. Refusant de se retirer de la ville et de suivre le trope virgilien du repos à la campagne, Hugo insiste au contraire sur les tensions entre la nature et la ville et les dramatise, tout en intensifiant le caractère dramatique de sa poésie lyrique dynamique et modernisée. This book explores the relationship between the city of Rome and the Aurelian Wall during the six centuries following its construction in the 270s AD, a period when the city changed and contracted almost beyond recognition, as it evolved from imperial capital into the spiritual center of Western Christendom. The Wall became the single most prominent feature in the urban landscape, a dominating presence which came bodily to incarnate the political, legal, administrative, and religious boundaries of urbs Roma, even as it reshaped both the physical contours of the city as a whole and the mental geographies of 'Rome' that prevailed at home and throughout the known world. With the passage of time, the circuit took on a life of its own as the embodiment of Rome's past greatness, a cultural and architectural legacy that dwarfed the quotidian realities of the post-imperial city as much as it shaped them.
Exploring the Visual Landscape - Advances in Physiognomic Landscape Research in the Netherlands
Exploring the Visual Landscape is about the combination of landscape research and planning, visual perception and Geographic Information Science. It showcases possible ways of getting a grip on themes like: landscape openness, cluttering of the rural landscape, high-rise buildings in relation to cityscape, historic landscapes and motorway panoramas. It offers clues for visual landscape assessment of spaces in cities, parks and rural areas. In that respect, it extends the long tradition in the Netherlands on physiognomic landscape research and shows the state of the art at this moment. Exploring the Visual Landscape offers important clues for theory, methodology and application in research and development of landscapes all over the world, from a specifically Dutch academic context. It provides a wide range of insights into the psychological background of landscape perception, the technical considerations of geomatics and methodology in landscape architecture, urban planning and design. Furthermore, there are some experiences worthwhile considering, which demonstrate how this research can be applied in the practice of landscape policy making.
