Populism and Peasant Iconography: Turkish painting in the 1930s
2005
Examines the history of early Turkish republican painting & the political elite's embrace of Western painting as demonstrative of an effort to create a secular state. Artistic productions symbolize the westernization & social reforms during the first decades of the republic. These changes of a \"modern nation\" -- based on Kemalist principles -- were initiated by the political elite & diffused to the general population. Some of the reforms of the Kemalist model were integrated into painted scenes as illustrations of proper Turkish behavior and appearance and idealized conceptions of the country's future. 6 Figures.
