White dresses : a memoir of love and secrets, mothers and daughters

Mary Pflum, Dean Peterson
Mary Elizabeth Pflum and Dean Richard Peterson were married yesterday in the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in Milwaukee. The Rev. Edward Wieland, a Roman Catholic priest, performed the ceremony. They became friends and over the next two months started hanging out together. ''Initially I thought he was being nice to the sick girl,'' she said, especially since her respiratory condition was tiring and ''fast-forwarded me to a more old-lady-like style.'' But she was buoyed by his sense of humor, and she felt a special intimacy with him, even though they had just met. ''I could share with Dean things that I couldn't share with family and friends,'' she said. ''Sometimes you end up comforting them,'' she added. ''I didn't want people to feel sorry for me. I could be open and honest with Dean, and I could lean on him.''
