Exploring and Photographing the Empty Quarter
Four hundred feet in the air, George Steinmetz continues to photograph Shibam, unaware of the effect his sudden appearance has down below; perched in the seat of his custom-built paraglider, aptly described as a \"flying lawn chair,\" Steinmetz focuses on capturing this region of the Wadi Hadramaut from just the right angle, light, and velocity. Two aerial shots of Shibam transform the rectangular rooftops of these narrow, tapering towers into an irregular mosaic of beige and white tiles that fill the frame and elevate the merely picturesque to an artistic abstraction of color, shape, and shadow. Writing in a straightforward and informative voice which occasionally leans toward the easy manner of contemporary adventure writing, Steinmetz refers to their adventures throughout Empty Quarter and finds many parallels between the sights and experiences they describe and his own 21st century travels: \"I would exchange camels and sextants for cars and GPS,\" he writes, \"but I would hear echoes of their epic struggles as I experienced my own\" (p. 16).

الكتاب رصد وثائقي دقيق لسيرة واحد من الشخصيات المميزه التي ذاع صيتها بين الناس، أتهمه البعض بالجاسوسية، والآخرون بالدعوة للتنصير ومنهم دون ذلك، ذلكم هو الحاج \"عبد الله فيلبي\" أو \"سانت جون فيلبي\"، الممثل السياسي البريطاني للسيد \"كوكس\" في المملكة العربية السعودية فيما بعد، وأحد الذين تعاملوا عن قرب مع الملك عبدالعزيز رحمة الله، أبان فترة التوحيد وهو بعد كل هذا مستكشف الجزيرة العربية على حقيقتها.

المستكشف هاري سانت جون فيلبي ورحلته إلى حضرموت
في هذا الكتاب المثير والخطير، الذي يجمع فيه مؤلفه بين دقة منهج الباحث وجمال لغة الأديب، تبرز أمامنا الأبعاد المتعددة لشخصية هاري سانت جون فيلبي، أو كما يسميه العرب : الحاج عبد الله فيلبي. فهو سياسي ورجل استخبارات بارع، ومستكشف رائد، وتاجر ماهر. وقد كان السبب المباشر لمجيئه إلى الشرق الأوسط، في عام 1914، الإسهام في تمكين حكومته البريطانية من إحكام قبضتها على أكبر قدر من تركة الدولة العثمانية في المنطقة. وعلى الرغم من استقالته من وظيفته الحكومية سنة 1924، بسبب اختلافه الشديد مع القائمين على سياسة بريطانيا في الشرق الأوسط، الذين اتهموه حينذاك بالعمل لصالح الأمير عبد العزيز بن عبد الرحمن آل سعود، فقد أختار أن يقضي ما تبقى من عمره، أي أكثر من أربعين عاما، في البلاد العربية.
