Picosecond pulses
2016,2011
This book's coverage builds from basic underlying theory to more complex ideas related to attosecond optics. It shows how the generation of attosecond optical pulses requires knowledge of femtosecond laser technologies but is also quite distinct from femtosecond laser technologies. The author elaborates on this point using semi-classical models and quantum mechanics theories. He explains generation of attosecond pulse train and gating methods for extracting single isolated pulses and presents illustrative examples of attosecond applications.

Chemistry and Materials Science
2014
China started nanotechnology research from 1990s, and has paid much attention to nanoeducation since then. Scientific discoveries from nanoresearch have been introduced timely into high school textbooks, and more specific courses such as Nanomaterials and Nanofabrication are being taught at both college and graduate levels. In this paper, nanotechnology courses at the Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing University, and Tsinghua University are chosen to be overviewed, which could be a good indicator of Chinese nanoeducation because of high-quality science and engineering education in these schools. Research institutes also contribute in popularizing nanoscience knowledge through activities such as public open days. These combined efforts substantially promote the public acceptance and understanding of nanoscience and technology in China.

Chemistry of High-Energy Materials
Chemistry of High-Energy Materials continues in this new and revised 3rd edition to provide fundamental scientific insights into primary and secondary explosives, propellants, rocket fuel and pyrotechnics. The contents of the previous edition were meticulously updated and recent research developments added to this graduate-level textbook. Applications in military and civil fields are discussed. Especially environmental issues caused by lead-based primary explosives, perchlorates in pyrotechnic formulations and modern signal flare compositions are discussed and current research presented. Further additions include the understanding of the mechanism and continuing development of laser ignition methods, techniques for the characterization of detonators and their output as well as principles and effects of underwater explosions.
New in the 3rd Edition:
• Revised and updated content, new study problems and questions.
• Extended examination of the application of ionic liquids in the field and hydrodynamics.
• Intended for advanced students in chemistry, materials science and engineering, as well as to all those working in defense technology.
\"This book makes a nice addition to the shelf of everyone involved with energetic materials. As such it is recommended as a very useful reference for both students and experienced readers.\"

Statement of the principles of quantum mechanics in the course of general physics
2011
Problems arising in the statement of principles of quantum physics in the course of general physics related to a proof of Bell’s inequalities and experimental verification of their violation are considered. Some erroneous or inexact statements in modern general physics textbooks are criticized. Recommendations on their elimination are given.

Footprints of \Experiment\ in Early Arabic Optics
2009
AbstractThis study traces the early developments of the concept of experiment with a view of extending the subject in both content and approach. It extends the content of the subject slightly backward, prior to the methodological breakthroughs of the Optics of Ibn al-Haytham (Alhazen or Alhacen, d. ca. 1040), which are credited as a \"significant landmark in the history of experimental science.\" And it extends the approach to the subject slightly forward, from the premise that early science was \"largely carried out in books,\" to a close examination of the books through which the footprints of 'experiment' may be traced. The point of departure is the Optics of Ahmad ibn 'Ī;sā, a revealing text for the early developments of concepts such as 'demonstration' and 'experiment', and one through which some modern discussions are examined and extended with reference to this and other historical sources.

Metal Filled Optical Fibers - Photonics and Plasmonics on the Nanoscale
2013
In this thesis we discuss how to combine optical fiber technology with metallic nanostructures. We present techniques to incorporate gold nanowires in photonic crystal- and microstructured-fibers. The unique optical properties of both, dielectrics and metals, result in a synergy between light manipulation on the nanoscale on the one hand and signal transmission using optical fibers on the other hand.We show that a gold nanowire, placed in the center of a photonic crystal fiber core, effectively attenuates all modes except the azimuthally polarized mode. Therefore the fiber acts as an azimuthal polarizing filter having a spectral bandwidth of almost three optical octaves. The local polarization state and near-field distribution of surface plasmon polaritons, excited on a coupled gold nanowire array, are measured for the first time in the 2D transverse dimensions. Using a new fabrication technique, based on wet chemical etching and mechanical cleaving, we have fabricated sharp gold nanotips, attached to optical fibers, that show strongly localized plasmonic “hotspots” and can act as novel near-field probes. The experimental results are complemented by theoretical discussions, comprising optical properties of dielectrics and metals, guided modes in cylindrical symmetric waveguides, surface plasmon polaritons and hybrid dielectric-metal structures supporting photonic-plasmonic supermodes.
