Analysis of the factors determining the distribution of heritage sites in Portugal
While all places have their own historical and cultural wealth, not all areas have the same number of points of tourist interest. Classified objects of heritage are a case in point: some places have a high concentration of classified heritage objects, while others do not. This article discusses the heterogeneity of objects classified as heritage of public interest in Portugal. In addition to a descriptive analysis, we estimated models for explaining this heterogeneity. The dimensions most responsible for such a phenomenon are those related to the centrality of places, their economic dynamism, and their touristic vocation. We found that variables like the centrality of a place, being close to the Spanish border, or having decentralised delegations of certain ministries impact the number of tangible and intangible cultural heritage objects. We further explore these outcomes by considering their serious challenges for less dense areas.
A multi-aspect decision-making approach, for regional developments based on Hungarian natural-healing factors
The study aims to support the development of a modern, scientifically grounded, and practically applicable decision-preparation system designed for managerial use in the decision-making processes related to regional development based on natural-healing factors. The system is developed through the extensive application of a systems approach. The analysis of territorial polarisation measurement employs indicators such as the extent-ratio, extent of dispersion, relative extent, and the dual indicator (Éltető–Frigyes index). Territorial distributions are examined using the Gini index, the Hirschman–Herfindahl index, and the Hoover index. Based on the obtained results, a decision-making system for regional development grounded in natural-medicine factors is constructed, incorporating various indicators and cartographic representations. ...
Sustainability and urban quality of life : research, policy and practice

It looks at quality of life within urban cities analysing amenities, infrastructure and assets while also bringing in the discourse around scarcity, disparity, accessibility, sustainability, equity, and well-being.
Institutional Thickness Revisited
Over the last two decades, the notion of institutional thickness has become a key reference for a large body of work that has sought to provide profound insights into the link between institutions and regional development. However, only few attempts have been made to reassess the concept, to improve its methodology, and to reflect on its empirical application. The aim of this article is to revise the original concept of institutional thickness. We draw on and seek to contribute to current work in economic geography and related disciplines on the role of organizations and institutions in regional development. We identify some crucial limitations and provide suggestions for how they can be addressed. It is argued that much can be gained by (1) explicitly elaborating on the relation between the organizational and institutional dimensions of thickness, (2) moving beyond overly static views on thickness, (3) developing a multiscalar approach to thickness, and (4) identifying features for assessing thickness in absolute and relative terms.
Industrial development in thin regions
Recent theorizing of path dependence supplements the traditional view of regional path-dependent industrial development characterized by lock-in effects with paths dealing with change, that is, path renewal and path creation. Few studies, however, examine why different types of regions experience diverse path-dependent development. This article examines why organizationally thin regions are much less likely to achieve path renewal and path creation than core regions. By use of a case study of industrial development in an organizationally thin and rather peripheral region in Norway the article contends that thin regions often need external investments to avoid being trapped in path extension.
Differential Spaces, Power Hierarchy and Collaborative Planning
Drawing upon collaborative planning theory and on the work of Lefebvre and de Certeau, this paper explores the multistage governance arrangements leading to the employment of temporary uses as an instrument for regeneration in a context of economic crisis. It contributes to a thorough understanding of the relations between the power hierarchy and the strategy/tactics developed through a more or less inclusive collaborative process from place-shaping (weak planning) to place-making (masterplanning). By decrypting the different paths that can be taken by the collaborative process, the paper demonstrates how temporary uses on differential spaces shape space from a use value point of view, influence and challenge the distribution of power and enable (temporary) occupants to acquire and sometimes sustain a position in the place-making process.
