Oil spill environmental forensics
Oil Spill Environmental Forensics provides a complete view of the various forensic techniques used to identify the source of an oil spill into the environment. The forensic procedures described within represent various methods from scientists throughout the world. The authors explore which analytical and interpretative techniques are best suited for a particular oil spill project. This handy reference also explores the use of these techniques in actual environmental oil spills. Famous incidents discussed include the Exxon Valdez incident in 1989 and the Guanabara Bay, Brazil 2000. The authors chronicle both the successes and failures of the techniques used for each of these events. Dr. Zhendi Wang is a senior research scientist and Head of Oil Spill Research of Environment Canada, working in the oil and toxic chemical spill research field. He has authored over 270 academic publications and won a number of national and international scientific honors and awards. Dr. Wang is a member of American Chemical Society (ACS), the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC), and the International Society of Environmental Forensics (ISEF). *International experts show readers the forensic techniques used in oil spill investigations*Provides the theoretical basis and practical applications for investigative techniques*Contains numerous case studies demonstrating proven techniques
Pollutant discharge and water quality in urbanisation
The main purpose of water quality monitoring may be seen as evaluating water quality conformity against water quality standards, especially for administrative purposes. Moreover, water quality monitoring data can be applied to estimate and evaluate pollutant loads in rivers. Chronological water quality fluctuations and vertical water quality profiles in water bodies are also important when taking into account the effects of land-based pollutants on coastal sea and estuary water quality. This book discusses the relationships between pollutant discharge and water quality, taking into account urban development and indicators like the pollutant load per capita flowing into the water body (PLCwb), an index used to evaluate the contribution of municipal wastewater pollutant discharge to pollutant loads flowing into ambient water bodies such as coastal zones, bays and lakes.
Bayes-based air pollution computer measurement and big data outlier detection model
In today’s rapidly changing social environment, high-dimensional data abound, but not all data are meaningful. In order to reduce costs and reduce consumption, people are more interested in some important variables. Therefore, variable selection of high-dimensional data is an important research direction. Based on the Bayesian method, it stands out among many variable selection methods with effective estimation efficiency and flexible mechanism, and it is also suitable for parametric and non-parametric models. Thanks to the flexibility of the statistical conclusion inference process, combined with prior information, the actual results are more accurate. At present, many indoor pollution problems, including decoration pollution, are getting more and more attention, and its air pollution calculations are obviously very important. Indoor air quality not only directly affects the comfort of the human body, but also significantly affects the work efficiency of family members. As a result of the development of the new digital economy, digital mining technology based on big data has brought unprecedented new development methods to various fields. This paper establishes an outlier detection model, identifies data processes that are significantly different from the normal data set or expected value, and cleans the data to improve the accuracy of the integrated detection model. This paper proposes a solution to this problem by combining big data mining technology with the establishment of an outlier detection model. At the same time, it optimizes the design of the model to reduce errors, so as to realize its accurate application in the measurement of air pollutants, and aims to promote its development.
How much is clean air worth? : calculating the benefits of pollution control
The economic costs of pollution are large, but uncertain. This book, from some of the leading analysts in the field, provides a much-needed accessible description of the methods for calculating externalities, the results and their policy implications. The authors clearly address the relevant uncertainties and ethical underpinnings, bringing a balanced approach to complex issues that are so often distorted by vested interests.-- Source other than Library of Congress.
Monitoring and modeling the Deepwater Horizon oil spill
Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 195.Monitoring and Modeling the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: A Record-Breaking Enterprise presents an overview of some of the significant work that was conducted in immediate response to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010.
INDOOR CORROSIVITY IN KLEMENTINUM BAROQUE LIBRARY HALL, PRAGUE
Air pollution in museums, libraries, churches, and other indoor environments of culture heritage objects was studied since 1980s. For classification of corrosivity of such type of indoor environments the ISO 11844 series was developed. The indoor corrosivity for basic metallic materials had been studied for Baroque library hall of Klementinum areal, Prague, using exposure of metallic coupons and measuring the climatic and pollution parameters. The Baroque library was first opened in 1722 year as a part of the Jesuit university based in Klementinum. It houses over 20,000 books, from the beginning of the 17th century until recent times. As the building is located in the centre of Prague, the outdoor environment is polluted mainly by nitrogen oxides from traffic source, but in 1990s of last century the sulphur dioxide pollution was also on high level. The Baroque hall is cladded by wooden panels which maybe a source of vapour organic acids corrosive for some metals and other materials as fresco paintings. The indoor gaseous air pollution was measured for 2 years with passive samplers – SO2, NOx, vapour acetic acid. The new method for acetic acid measurement was verified. Metallic coupons of zinc, coper, silver and lead were exposed in this hall for one year and their mass increases and corrosion mass losses were evaluated. For metallic coupons the colour change is one of measured parameters, too. Repeated one-year measurement data are presented and indoor corrosivity according to ISO 11844 was determined.
Indoor Air Quality - The Latest Sampling and Analytical Methods (2nd Edition)
In the new millennium, indoor air quality methodologies have expanded, evolved, and morphed. This book addresses the old and the new. The focus is shifting from a knee-jerk to a more proactive response. Although indoor air quality in older buildings will continue to present old challenges, new construction is going forward with new challenges. This book covers basic concepts and details various approaches to the identification and assessment of indoor air contaminants that contribute to building-related illness in commercial buildings, institutions, and residences. Included are newly added topics focusing on less common concerns in indoor air quality such as psychological and building comfort factors and approaches to assessing air movement within buildings. Expanded appendices and three new chapters provide the reader with 30 percent new material, including the most recent approaches to indoor air quality as well as more inclusive information to further address quality problems.
